Here it is - we are still slightly outraged

I watched the Brexit movie with Cumberbatch playing DC on Netflix this afternoon, btw. Not the best film I've ever seen, but interesting, especially in the context of his modus operandi and how he manipulated over 3m voters in 2016 as part of the Vote Leave campaign by unlawfully misusing their data to target them individually with 1 billion fake adverts, for which he has never been held to account and somehow this referendum result stands when it clearly shouldn't

itsgettingweird · 30/05/2020 16:54

Oh I don't know sorrow WinkGrin

1forsorrow · 30/05/2020 17:02

I have to admit he has grown on me, I found him a bit miserable at the start Witty and Vallance seemed professional and reassuring. Now I think he is the one to trust, I can't see him saying anything he doesn't agree with.

itsgettingweird · 30/05/2020 17:05

Yes. I found myself trusting him. I've even started a thread called Prof Van Tam. He has a voice of reason and a very honest demeanour and seems to actually have integrity.

Saucery · 30/05/2020 17:10

I sometimes think having Cumberbatch playing him in a tv drama went to his head. Not that self esteem seems to have ever been a problem to him.

Roussette · 30/05/2020 17:13

I do too. But don't we feel we trust Van Tam because trustworthy Ministers at these press briefings are very very thin on the ground...

itsgettingweird · 30/05/2020 17:19

He was out with Oliver Dowden who seemed to not really know any science! Seems nice enough bloke and quite approachable but more schoolboy compared to Matt and Boris approach of running rough shod over everyone.

Think that gave him more of a chance to out his point across.

PurplePansy05 · 30/05/2020 17:20

Saucery That's an interesting comment. I quite agree.

I wish I had his self esteem, if I was him and listened to my own speeches, looked at the mess I've created since 2016 and then looked at myself in the mirror, every day would be a shit day.

quiteathome · 30/05/2020 17:29

Looks like the Cummings effect is really happening. I did not see a lot of evidence that people were aware of the fact that there is still a pandemic happening. Apart from the queue outside the supermarket that is it- not a lot of social distancing happening once inside the supermarket. (I know that people have been lax for a while, however it was starting to feel like people have given up.

itsgettingweird · 30/05/2020 17:48

Quite in my town it's still happening. Supermarkets still good queues and controlled numbers inside.
Even the beach has proper social distancing and people adhering to the rules.

SouthWestmom · 30/05/2020 18:27

On our walk today (an hour, countryside) we saw 15 people (kids to adults) playing rounders in the park (I counted them) a group of six having a picnic, five kids of similar ages walking together, several paddling and swimming in the river, and lots of pairs of middle aged people carefully avoiding everyone (like us).

So I would say lockdown is finished and never really started. No enforcement, we don't have the same set up as eg Italy where police are visible.

Lucywilde · 30/05/2020 18:30

I know the lockdown has been very hard on a lot of not most people but it has been nowhere near as strict as other countries. And this is why we’re still seeing high death rates and lots of new cases a day.

JaneJohn · 30/05/2020 18:45

London parks are heaving today. Massive groups of 15-20 people not socially distancing at all. The police are also turning a blind eye. I'm pregnant and careful to avoid but wondering what is going to happen next.

SouthWestmom · 30/05/2020 19:02

Dh and I were talking about it. I have a condition that I'm not sure whether it would be worse or better with covid and he is older than me. Neither of us are going to meet up with people etc beyond my mum and the kids in the house.

The daily positives is not decreasing.

Hospital admissions is increasing. Graph showed this clearly but I just remember we'd got down from 640 odd to 430 odd and now we are back up to being in the 400's daily.

Now of ventilators is remaining broadly the same.

Numbers in hospital has decreased in a week. But only by approx 1500. That's not many to me.
So that's roughly 200 a day. Look at death rate it's broadly inline with that rate.

Lucywilde · 30/05/2020 19:34

Loss of pictures coming out showing beauty spots and beaches heaving. No social distancing in place. But hey Nando’s is opening up as is all grass roots sport. Wonderful Hmm

My kids have Sen and my mum is very annoyed that her and my dad (who has had cancer. They’re both overweight and elderly) haven’t been invited over for a BBQ. Tried explaining it and she’s become offended. The elder two kids have gone and stood outside their house but in our garden they would find it hard not to hug them. So now my mum is grumpy probably because she’s bored and because she’s overly sensitive.

itsgettingweird · 30/05/2020 19:34

500's daily - sorry

Roussette · 30/05/2020 22:11

Nouef I'm the same as you. My DH is over 70 and we are not changing anything at all. I'm not desperate to go to Nandos or a drive thru MaccyD's. Grin
We'll just look after ourselves, only thing is, I would love to see our DCs, but it can wait...
One offered to come down and sleep in a tent in the garden!

Given we are in touch online all the time, I can't see the point TBH but we appreciated it, because we do miss seeing them.

SouthWestmom · 30/05/2020 23:47

Rousette it's just not worth it. BJ clearly sacrificing us on the altar of DC and I don't want to risk it. I don't know how deadly it might be (I am sceptical but cautious) and I don't need to go clothes shopping/Nando's/hairdresser etc.

DP is turning into a bit of a conspiracy theorist and I’m finding it difficult to handle. FWIW, I have some views on this myself in terms of government handling, but DP is straying down the ‘DP you actually know anyone that has died from coronavirus?’ Route and I am finding it quite upsetting.

I personally believe that Boris knew the virus was coming from November ish and realised it was his wet dream in terms of being able to ride it as a vehicle to do what he wants, but DP almost seems to believe that ‘it’s just the flu’ and ‘we haven’t actually seen any people dying on the streets.’

I pointed out we sort of did in China/Italy but he insists it’s that we’ve just been fed numbers.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 31/05/2020 12:25

Labours chance of becoming the next government will be made even more difficult because of the change to constitutional boundaries.

I seriously doubt Labour will ever get a majority without all the Scottish seats they’ve lost to SDP. It makes me feel very sad and anxious (understatement) to think we may be stuck with this shower of shyte as the only alternative is a coalition with the Lib Dem’s and they wouldn’t even consider it last time.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 31/05/2020 12:29

Sorry, SNP Not SDP, typing failure doh! 😳

PurplePansy05 · 31/05/2020 15:11

Just saw the massive protests in London. I get the reasons why, but this shouldn't be happening in the middle of a pandemic. We are doomed.

Lucywilde · 31/05/2020 17:07

I felt like that. I understand how horrific what has happened to George is but massive groups gathering when our death rate us so high seems like madness.
