Do we think the PM Is going to allow the rest of us to hang out in our gardens now?

I feel totally misled by the title of this thread! I honestly thought that we were going to play a game of Cluedo!

Cornettoninja · 25/05/2020 19:05

He looked distinctly irritated throughout to me. I think he had to stick to whatever line he’d spun Boris so didn’t have the chance to come up with something more plausible for the general public and was outraged at having to justify himself at all. Testing eyesight for driving by driving? Banging on like his circumstance was some sort of special case? Come on, there’s no need to embarrass yourself and us.

The only time I detected uncomfortableness was when he was asked about the potential damage he’d done to northern Tory seats they’d won for the first time at the last election.

I don’t really give a shit about him but I do think he’d have been better off resigning and riding the storm out. More important people than him have done it and made a quiet comeback when the dust settles.

damnthatanxiety · 25/05/2020 19:09

So anyone with Covid who was supposed to be self isolating but felt a bit sicky could go for a walk and sit by a lake in the park and take their kid for a wee in the woods then...ok.... good to know.

Glowcat · 25/05/2020 19:10

My elderly relative went into a care home in February. His wife cared for him at home for many years before that but his health got to a point where he needed 24hr care and he couldn’t move himself and she couldn’t lift him. She agonised over moving him into a home but after repeated falls she felt that she was out of options. She visited him daily and stayed with him for hours. His sister had visited him twice a week for the past 5 years or so to give his wife a break and spend time with her brother. She visited him every other day at the home. Then the virus came and the home stopped allowing visitors to protect the residents. He died about 3 weeks into this lockdown (not of coronavirus.)The care home staff were there but no family. His wife has heart problems so she’s on the shielding list. She couldn’t go to view his body. The funeral directors were kind and arranged to have the hearse bring the coffin along her street on the way to the Crematorium and pause so she could pay her respects. There was no funeral service. This isn’t a rare situation at the moment.

We’ve all lost something, from the trivial to the heart wrenching. The freedom to go and buy a packet of crisps because you really fancy them right now, sitting the exams you’ve been working towards for two years, seeing your newborn grandchild. Being with family on their deathbed. We’ve all done it for The Greater Good. And he stands up there talking about driving 30 miles to check his eyesight? It’s just dripping with contempt.

kateandme · 25/05/2020 19:10

he didnt have issues that any other parent with symtoms or not had.and single parents and those with young or old dependents!

Scattyhattie · 25/05/2020 19:13

If you become too unwell to care for a child would social services then temporarily take into care?

I'm surprised that given his position he couldn't find resources to get care plan set up to stay in London.
Also he kept talking about going back to work despite wife possibly having covid rather than isolating like we've all been told.

I saw news interviewer ask some government official about private gardens when they allowed people to meet 1 other person at park etc and response was that while for some peoples gardens have outside access and enough space to distance to be fine, many may not or require going via house, people then using toilets or touching same items etc so easier to keep message clear by not it the giving OK. Which also suggests Gov don't want us to use our own personal judgement.

EstherEliza · 25/05/2020 19:15

They would have to take them in to care, but only as a last very desperate option. They would look to family to help out first.

bellinisurge · 25/05/2020 19:16

According to Jess Phillips MP, the rules on child safety were put in to help people suffering domestic violence in their home, not people with childcare issues. Anyone with a child had exactly the same dilemma. Anyone.

kateandme · 25/05/2020 19:16

hes in the fucking government.he could have got help

MaxNormal · 25/05/2020 19:18

Isn’t Dom Cummings the one that’s trying to sort public services, including replacing the 20 thousand police officers that have been lost?

He's certainly got all sorts of interesting plans for privatising the civil service and turning a profit for his chums.
Re. the police officers, Channel 4 kindly fact-checks that for us:

Pandamumium · 25/05/2020 19:22

The media have every right to question Cummings.
He is an unelected member of the Government. MPs can be voted out by the constituents at the next election or be deselected by the local party. That cannot happen to Cummings. He has to be held to account by somebody.

Newjez · 25/05/2020 19:22

I'm having trouble breathing.

I might try scuba diving just to test my lungs.

MintyMabel · 25/05/2020 19:23

I think he's coming across very well and i think the media is showing their worst side. I'm a lefty btw.

You were watching a different thing from me then. He did terribly.

Clavinova · 25/05/2020 19:23

According to Jess Phillips MP, the rules on child safety were put in to help people suffering domestic violence in their home, not people with childcare issues.

Jess Philips appears to be incorrect;

"At the government’s daily press conference on 24 March, England’s deputy chief medical officer Dr Jenny Harries spoke of the “exceptional circumstance” of an adult unable to care for a young child during the pandemic."

“A small child clearly is a vulnerable individual, so in this case, although we are encouraging everybody to stay in their own households–that’s the unit with the same risk of exposure–clearly if you have adults who are unable to look after a small child, that is an exceptional circumstance,” Dr Harries said.

So anyone with Covid who was supposed to be self isolating but felt a bit sicky could go for a walk and sit by a lake in the park and take their kid for a wee in the woods then...ok.... good to know.

That trip appears to have been on day 15.

MintyMabel · 25/05/2020 19:25

The journalists keep repeating the questions that others have already asked.

Presumably to see if he will actually answer one of them.

MintyMabel · 25/05/2020 19:28

Do we think the PM Is going to allow the rest of us to hang out in our gardens now?

Strange conclusion to come to given the press are accepted as key workers so have different rules. They could also be inside socially distancing or would you have asked the same question in that case?

sussexman · 25/05/2020 19:30

Yep, that was on the day he thought his eyes might be dodgy so he drove his family around to check. Because that's the sort of thing any reasonable person does when they aren't sure about their eyesight.

bossyrossy · 25/05/2020 19:35

dudsville - I agree. I’m not a Tory voter and dislike Cummings but I thought the Radio 4 coverage of his press conference was very poor and biased.

viques · 25/05/2020 19:38

If you were a defendant in a trial and Dominic Cummings was the witness you were relying on to convince the jury about your alibi otherwise you'd be heading to chokey, you'd be checking your pockets to make sure you had a toothbrush ,toothpaste, a bar of soap and a deodorant wouldn't you.

Merigoround · 25/05/2020 19:40

I thought he was supposed to be some sort of great advisor. I didnt watch the shitshow because I had a good idea it would be full of contempt for the public who he has no respect for but who seemingly are demanding his personal explanation.
I have seen clips though and am bemused by this greatly brained person who cant remember his own story. Why is it all written down? Surely he can just recount the information. The truth doesnt vary. Why was there new information even now on the 3rd day? Why was he wearing a shirt for this when in every other photo Ive seen he has been in casual sports wear.

I dont believe a word he said. I believe he holds the 'little people' in utter contempt. I believe that he and BoJo will both squirm out of this and will not pay any penalty whatsoever.

Cameron2012 · 25/05/2020 19:41

Excuse me, myself and my wife are blind, can you tell us the route to Barnard Castle please?
The kiddy in the back?, he’ll be fine I am a caring blind driving father looking after his best interests.

Bathroom12345 · 25/05/2020 19:41

He was Day 15 of his self isolation and he never was tested for CV 19. He said he didn’t meet anyone

kateandme · 25/05/2020 19:41

he wasnt in those exceptional circumstances though.he did it just in case at that point.
then the drive.andsitting by lake.and woods.fuck off

Mayra1367 · 25/05/2020 19:43

Just seen a post about Cummings family birthdays saying it was his mums birthday on March 30 th and his wife’s birthday on the day he had a drive to Barnham Castle to check his eyesight . Bit of a coincidence if true.
