The Weston Super Mare hospital has announced this morning that it's closed it's A&E due to an increase in the number of Covid patients the hospital is currently treating.

This highlights why "tourist" hotspots have been trying to persuade people from away not to visit them.

Also highlights that there are still plenty of Covid cases around and it's still spreading.

This is why the lockdown needs to carry on, with very slight relaxations over a long time period. Those who think it's all over and we can get back to normal are deluded.

ToffeeYogurt yes, there will be a lot more WFH, but it's no secret that seaside towns largely depend on tourism and the government doesn't exactly pour much money into them.

IrmaFayLear · 25/05/2020 17:09

Has anyone yet mentioned that great band from Weston-Super-Mare... Racy?

My linking skills are desperately poor, but anyone of a certain vintage will remember "Boy oh Boy" and "Some Girls Do"....

Pertella · 25/05/2020 17:11

All this because someone described a hospital as being small Grin

Lockdown was never intended to be a long term solution, nor a sustainable one. I am baffled by people who think it will "eradicate the virus" and that we should not emerge until that has happened. It was only ever meant to contain it in the immediate term, which it has done.

But within what you say there's lots of debate about what counts as adequately 'contained' and what counts as 'the immediate term'.

I don't know anyone who wants lockdown to continue until there is a vaccine but I've seen a lot of different opinions about precisely how fast it should end and what should be in place before each successive step down takes place.

For instance - are infection rates low enough that combined with the tracking and tracing we have set up so far we can avoid rates going up again? This is a matter for debate in itself.

Unfortunately a lot of people seem to react to disagreement about timing and how this is done either by accusing people of wanting to abandon lockdown and all safety measures wholesale straight away, or accusing them of wanting to be locked down forever and cower and hide in their houses. Presumably this depends on whether the person disagreeing thinks the end of lockdown should happen faster or more slowly than the accuser. In reality I think most people are close to the middle than to the extreme ends.

I really do think Bristol is a shithole.

Polluted. Overcrowded. No affordable housing. Not enough green spaces.

Too arrogant and too capitalist orientated. And too dependent on unsustainable businesses. No matter what the government says.

Educate yourself about
Weston. Not my job.

You want to miss out. Fine

Comingoutontop there is still the right to Freedom of Expression actually. Don't tell me what to do. Thanks, Just as much of a right to express opinions as anyone else.

I choke the times I've been to Bristol. Air pollution. Over priced everything. No housing.

Breathe a sigh of relief getting off the train. Don't get above yourselves.

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 17:19

@Comingoutontop123

The Wurzels have often played Weston but there is (or sadly was) a very good bar scene on the front.

FoolsAssassin · 25/05/2020 17:22

Shock about Bristolians! Cut to the now (not).
This is getting a bit like the Cummings press conference !

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/05/2020 17:23

@MadameMarie The Wurzels. I mean... I'd pay NOT to see them live. Grin

Pertella · 25/05/2020 17:23

U OK hun?

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 17:23

I think Bristol is lovely, especially around Clifton. I’d love to love there.

Pertella · 25/05/2020 17:26

Is Btistol where the 'Boris is Hench' bridge is?

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 17:26

And the question was asked before about what bands would play Weston that wouldn't play other towns and while the answer is a fair few because there's a lot of good local singers, bands famously love playing Western Super Mare because of the atmosphere in the crowds which you simply don't get in the more sleepy seaside towns.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 25/05/2020 17:59

part from the museums, the galleries, the historic buildings, the aqaurium, the zoo, the harbourside walks, the SS great Britain, Clifton Downs, you're absolutely right there's nothing in Bristol, nothing at all

You forgot the suspension bridge. It's amazing. Bristol has a lot of offer. I feel sad for anyone who thinks it is just shopping.

As for Weston user Mare....it's got....mud.

Discobar · 25/05/2020 18:01

Weston sounds proper inbred. No offence

BillywilliamV · 25/05/2020 18:03

Still, I suspect they have a better grasp of grammar than your good self?

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 25/05/2020 18:20

I am awarding you all 'most surreal thread on Mumsnet today'

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 19:34

There's a helicopter museum in Weston.

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 19:37

@IrmaFayLear
I've just been looking at Weston history. The band was called Racey.

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 19:46

Weston is a great town but please stay away for now

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 19:50

Good advice Marie It's perhaps safer staying away from the more infected areas and it sounds like Weston is currently one of them. I hope it can be contained quickly.

I'll visit the helicopter museum post pandemic.

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 20:19

Sounds like it’s now the plague capital of the south west

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 20:42

I think the seaside towns will suffer over the next few weeks. Weston is a warning.

A grave error to let the masses travel and piss and shit all over the place. Now more are feeling emboldened to do what they like.

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 20:49

What do you mean by ‘the masses?’ Dont you count yourself in this?

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 20:53

The general public traveling far and wide to go to the seaside.

Inoneminute · 25/05/2020 20:54

The general public are allowed to travel far and wide to go to the seaside under the current rules. Can't think of anything worse, this weekend myself, but they're not doing anything wrong.
