The Weston Super Mare hospital has announced this morning that it's closed it's A&E due to an increase in the number of Covid patients the hospital is currently treating.

This highlights why "tourist" hotspots have been trying to persuade people from away not to visit them.

Also highlights that there are still plenty of Covid cases around and it's still spreading.

This is why the lockdown needs to carry on, with very slight relaxations over a long time period. Those who think it's all over and we can get back to normal are deluded.

@Daffodil101

It's been closed from 10pm since 2017 'on a temporary basis'.

In late 2019 it was looking like it would be announced it would be closed permanently

Is anyone here even planning to go to Weston?

Even if I was (I'm not) I'd be inclined to change my mind for fear that the locals might all be as deeply unpleasant as the poster above.

PickAChew · 25/05/2020 15:48

Do we lock down because of massive outbreaks of Norivirus? That is highly contagious, untreatable and kills people. It's serious enough to close hospital wards and public buildings. Yet there is no suggestion that we should all stay indoors. We have to live with it and manage it, as needed, and we will have to do the same with this coronavirus.

Daffodil101 · 25/05/2020 15:51

It sounds a bit ‘local’

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 15:52

And if they are tourists then yes they shouldn't be there. For their own sakes. Weston is the more infected place. The tourists in fact should study there so that they don't bring Weston infections back with them...

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 15:52

*Stay there
Study there??

Leflic · 25/05/2020 15:53

We’ve got 4 months before cold and flu season starts.
That’s going to be bloody chaos quite frankly. Lockdown will be impossible again as so many will be immune and others chancing it.

In the absence of a vaccine I ‘m not worried about people getting a mild dose now.

Daffodil101 · 25/05/2020 15:53

It sounds as though it ought to be fenced off!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/05/2020 15:56

I went to Weston on a day trip about 7 years ago but I can't remember much.

Comingoutontop123 · 25/05/2020 15:58

@Westonsupermarebeauty

No, you don't know what you're talking about if you think Weston General has always been open when A and E has been closed overnight for 3 years and frequently closed in the day as it's so tiny.

And you apparently don't know N. Somerset has higher rates of people over 65 and over 85 than the general population of England. And you also don't think W-S-M is a well recognised area of social/economic deprivation.

Living somewhere doesn't mean you know anything. Especially since you apparently can't be arsed to educate yourself on where you live before spouting crap about how you can't go to the beach because of 'outsiders' and they've caused the tiny hospital which has been threatened with full closure for years to close their doors..

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 15:59

Ouch.

MRex · 25/05/2020 16:00

Loads of people travel to "our" park, we avoid it on weekends and feel thankful that we are near enough to use it mid-week. I wouldn't dream of suggesting that people living a couple of miles away should folornly pace their small patch of open grass just because their area had higher infections than round here. With public spaces that seems horrendously selfish. My family by the beach are the same, avoiding it on weekends and early evenings. Again, they don't think people are somehow wrong for going to enjoy public space.

Anyone travelling far enough that they have toilet issues is a knob though, because it's obvious that there won't be facilities. Reports of toilet issues in Essex are awful, I'd hope to see more police and fines as a result.

All that said, it's funny how many posters just don't read the thread at all to see that it was closed because of cross-infections WITHIN the hospital, not because of too many cases due to tourists.

Jane67996 · 25/05/2020 16:00

Yes, people will get COVID and the majority of those people will recover. Many will not even know we have it.
Time to end the lockdown.

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 16:01

I don't think our beauty from Weston has too much to worry about. Spain, Greece and Italy have all said they are going to open up for international tourism quite soon. Guaranteed sunshine, and locals who don't go out of their way to make you feel unwelcome. Not really a tough choice there, is it?

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 16:09

Jane I agree with you that it's (past) time to take the same measures other countries have taken so that we can have a safer end to lockdown. With less risk to economy and lives.

Unless you know something global experts don't, you can't confidently state Covid won't effect most people. We don't yet know about potential long-term complications. Also the prexisting conditions that increase risks are very common. 'Most' people are ok (by 'ok' I presume you mean not dead) but is that because of lockdown?

Public toilets should be open. Cleaners should be given appropriate PPE. Lots of people have to travel. Key workers commuting, people providing essential care to vulnerable family or friends, emergencies.

onesmalldog · 25/05/2020 16:11

If we carry on in lockdown the results will be far more devastating than the covid itself. The government will not, cannot, keep paying people. It's not sustainable.

Westonsupermarebeauty · 25/05/2020 16:16

No there isn't. When the second wave comes. As it will, you will know what some of us are talking about.

And I am not 'your beauty'. Thanks .

Comingoutontop123 · 25/05/2020 16:16

I really enjoy a day out in Weston. But it's a 'beach' on the Bristol channel and not an area of outstanding natural beauty.

I'm curious about the 'cultures and traditions'. It's like any other slightly crappy 'seaside' town. Fish and chips, a pier, arcades, some pubs and clubs, buying overpriced seaside 'tat', and my personal fave, seaside rock shaped like a knob or similar.

If you don't sit on the 'beach' you can walk the entire town and it's entire attractions within an hour.

I so enjoy it as I love that 'seaside' vibe even if not by the sea but it is what it is. And no 'culture or traditions' that I can see.

Westonsupermarebeauty · 25/05/2020 16:17

The main point is, it is our HOME.
Nothing of value to you that is sure.
But do you value YOURS
I wouldn't say so

MarginalGain · 25/05/2020 16:18

No there isn't. When the second wave comes. As it will, you will know what some of us are talking about.

I don't know how some people are going to cope when the drama of covid19 (eventually) passes.

Westonsupermarebeauty · 25/05/2020 16:19

That's because you have no culture of your own and are completely prejudiced and blind. Bristol with it's parades of people who are interested in shopping and nothing else?

Pertella · 25/05/2020 16:21

So what are these cultures and traditions unique to Weston?

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 16:22

No there isn't. When the second wave comes. As it will, you will know what some of us are talking about

Given how oddly this response is worded, I doubt I'd have a clue what you're talking about.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/05/2020 16:24

What culture is there that is unique to Weston? It's a seaside town, much like any other. Confused

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 16:26

I want to know what the traditions are, too! I think Weston is a bit like Blackpool.
