To those who think it's over

The Weston Super Mare hospital has announced this morning that it's closed it's A&E due to an increase in the number of Covid patients the hospital is currently treating.

This highlights why "tourist" hotspots have been trying to persuade people from away not to visit them.

Also highlights that there are still plenty of Covid cases around and it's still spreading.

This is why the lockdown needs to carry on, with very slight relaxations over a long time period. Those who think it's all over and we can get back to normal are deluded.

You do look a bit silly getting so wound up about what others are saying about a hospital. Even more so when the facts are easily available via google and wiki.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/05/2020 15:34

@Westonsupermarebeauty I think what people are trying to say is that there's no need to panic just because of a small increase in one area. Not that it doesn't matter.

Westonsupermarebeauty · 25/05/2020 15:35

Dafodill

Yes, I now what you mean about Opera.

The primary school (in an area of multiple economic deprivation
wrote their OWN opera aged 8 and 9 in a school which is a National Teaching School actually.

And by the way, Opera originally was a blossoming of those who did not have vast amounts of resources. In many countries.

And should be accessible to all, so I'm glad you were singing it in your back garden. Did you write your own? We did.

Devlesko · 25/05/2020 15:35

Daffodil

They'll be plenty of Opera being played in my little cottage in Wales Grin
I really do like it.
I may visit you in your cultural hotspot.

Daffodil101 · 25/05/2020 15:35

Is it really closed after 10pm? 😳

Westonsupermarebeauty · 25/05/2020 15:36

Waxonwax

Fine for you 'not panicking'. You don't live here.

And no. I'm not 'panicking' I'm doing what I have always done, can't expect the government to do the right thing.

Don't be insulting.

iamapixie · 25/05/2020 15:36

Other than smallpox and rinderpest, viruses are never 'over' I don't think. Happy to be told I'm wrong but I can't think of others that we have eradicated.
However we don't generally lock down and ignore every other issue facing society because of them - often issues which affect more deprived areas like Weston than others.

Knocksomesense · 25/05/2020 15:36

@Westonsupermarebeauty my sil who had a pregnancy related issue had to travel to Bristol and my niece who had a uti had to travel to musgrove. It does regularly shut to the community

Comingoutontop123 · 25/05/2020 15:37

Census and statistics published by NORTH SOMERSET COUNTY COUNCIL for a start.

They've been expressing concern about the ageing demographic and how to manage this in terms of resources for years.

Are you really so dim that you stand outside a school and see lots of children and think that's representative of the entire population of the area? Grin

If you can use MN, you can use Google. It'll hopefully help you to understand where you live.

Daffodil101 · 25/05/2020 15:37

You’ll be entirely welcome, Devlesko! I might even pour you a gin and dubonnet. Have you tried that?! Bloody lethal!

I don’t sing opera, I don’t think I said that. I do listen to it. Perhaps it’s the one you wrote?

Westonsupermarebeauty · 25/05/2020 15:37

Dafodill

Yes, I'm from Wales originally also.
Glad you are still singing

trappedsincesundaymorn · 25/05/2020 15:38

Daffodil101

Yep it really does.

Westonsupermarebeauty · 25/05/2020 15:39

Yes, I know it shuts.
And I know we have had to travel for more complex issues.

No point saying anything on here,
No one cares.

Just dont expect a welcome when you do turn up.
Go home

Daffodil101 · 25/05/2020 15:40

Is anyone here even planning to go to Weston?

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 15:40

Tbh if you still arnt seeing your loved ones from other households at a safe distance your heading towards being in the minority and mugging yourselves off.
Lots of people live on the other side of the country to their families. For many, visiting would require an overnight trip.

There are potentially serious consequences for people with other illnesses, physical and mental.
Indeed. Exactly why we need to get the R rate down before reopening. How else can these people safely attend hospital (where R rates inevitably have remained high)?

people don't start returning to work soon, there'll be no work to return
Absolutely. Likewise if we have a bad second wave and/or disruptive stop, start, stop, start. We urgently need to follow the lead of other countries. Take the simple measures they've taken. More PPE for frontline staff, test, track and trace, early treatment, masks for the public. Then we'd have a safer way out of lockdown without risking the economy and lives. We could've done all this by now.

Westonsupermarebeauty · 25/05/2020 15:40

I don't stand 'outside' a school.
I'm a former parent governor of a group of eight schools
And the secondary schools apart.
Of course I have no idea what I am saying, obviously, I just live here.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/05/2020 15:40

Weston I wouldn't panic if it was my area either. It's to be expected as lockdown eases. Small spikes.

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 15:41

@Westonsupermarebeauty The masses turning up in your town during a pandemic are not being fair to you or your town. You have a right o be angry.

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 15:41

What about a returning local @Westonsupermarebeauty?
The airports continue to operate as normal. Some of the international arrivals might be doing just as you ask. Going home. To Weston.

Devlesko · 25/05/2020 15:41

Just derailing a bit, but do you have this daffodil and Weston
My dd studies Opera and was gutted we couldn't go to Verona this year.

Knocksomesense · 25/05/2020 15:43

Definitely be angry. My family member only said this morning that the place is crawling with tourists

Daffodil101 · 25/05/2020 15:45

No I don’t, thank you!

Have a gin and dubonnet 🍷. It’s ok, I washed the glass!

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 15:45

The government is allowing international (hundreds of thousands of 'the masses') and regional travel. Therefore some people will travel. If people don't want unrestricted travel they need to ask the government to do something. Not tell people who are doing nothing illegal to Go Home.

Let's also not forget some people have an urgent or essential need to travel. Key workers commuting to work, people travelling to provide care to vulnerable family or friends, emergencies.

FoolsAssassin · 25/05/2020 15:46

It is small but serves Weston and surrounding villages. In addition to the cases in the hospital there were numerous staff off sick on Friday, many more than the number of cases.

Consider that it had relatively few issues since this started this is not good got the hospital and community to be seeing this at this point and a warning to other similar places.

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 15:47

Weston isn't a tiny village where everybody knows who everybody else is.
How on earth does your friend know who's a tourist and who's a local?
