To those who think it's over

The Weston Super Mare hospital has announced this morning that it's closed it's A&E due to an increase in the number of Covid patients the hospital is currently treating.

This highlights why "tourist" hotspots have been trying to persuade people from away not to visit them.

Also highlights that there are still plenty of Covid cases around and it's still spreading.

This is why the lockdown needs to carry on, with very slight relaxations over a long time period. Those who think it's all over and we can get back to normal are deluded.

OP posts:
MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 20:58

Yes it's allowed which is why they're packed but these towns will suffer the consequences as Weston are

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 20:58

The beaches in Scotland and Wales are comparatively empty.

PigletJohn · 25/05/2020 21:33

and cold?

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 22:13

But Marie, don’t you ever travel far and wide?

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 22:26

Normally but I haven't been more than 5 miles from home in 10 weeks given the pandemic.

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 22:30

No, neither have I, but the way you speak about them isn’t nice, and they’ve done nothing wrong.

I have personally taken the view that toilets will be closed. Perhaps I’m wrong

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 22:41

We need to be fair to the people who live on these places

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 22:47

I don’t believe that people who happen to live in cities ought to be denied the chance to get a change of scenery and some fresh air any more than people living in resorts ought to be denied the opportunity to go to a city, if they wish.

Spain, Italy and France have had a stricter lockdown yet still have thousands of cases. We’ve been shut away for the worst part, the numbers are falling quite rapidly. We need to get out and get on with it nhs.

His many actual cases are there in that hospital?

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 23:14

I think somebody on another thread said it’s 40% of staff. Which seems bizarre.

Chillipeanuts · 25/05/2020 23:15

“It will never be over”

Of course it will. This has happened again and again throughout human history. It ended every time, it will end this time.
Maybe not just in 2 months though: it won’t just disappear because 21st century people are fed up with it. There’s a natural cycle and it will go through it.

LastTrainEast · 25/05/2020 23:41

BovaryX no it can't go on forever, but the clearer thinkers amongst us didn't see it as "house arrest". The government paid people's wages so that they could stay at home and be safe. Then they asked essential workers to risk their lives to keep things going for the lucky bastards sitting at home.

DippyAvocado · 26/05/2020 00:04

Spain, Italy and France have had a stricter lockdown yet still have thousands of cases. We’ve been shut away for the worst part, the numbers are falling quite rapidly.

New cases yesterday:
Italy: 531
Spain: 482
France: 115
United Kingdom: 2,405

SpillTheTeaa · 26/05/2020 00:07

I saw this on the news but did wonder if a lot of the cases were actually their own community mixing when they shouldn't be etc.
Of course people are flocking places and it's wrong. Just a thought that crossed my mind.

Leflic · 26/05/2020 00:37

New cases aren’t the problem. Deaths are. And you are less likely to due of this than you were to die anyway,

If we have lots of people catching it and recovering that’s great. In fact better, because they have immunity.

Think on till November six months away, All the normal coughs and flu as well as this. Christmas shopping starts then.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/05/2020 01:16

@LastTrainEast as one of the "lucky bastards" getting paid to sit at home, I'd rather swap places with an essential worker. I'm not scared of the virus. I'm scared of losing my job which has a lot higher possibility than me dying of the virus. A lot of us "lucky bastards" will be facing redundancy and Universal Credit pretty soon.

WanderingFruitWonderer · 26/05/2020 05:19

I agree with one of the posters earlier who said that we tend to find news stories to support our personal narrative. Which is totally understandable.

I do this. At the beginning of lockdown, I was really happy, almost loving lockdown; and would find stories to support it. Now, I'm thoroughly lockdowned-out! So I'm convincing myself it's best for all that we get back to normalish asap (whilst remaining safe, careful, alert etc) and am deliberately finding scientific articles that support an end to lockdown! I'm choosing to ignore the articles that suggest otherwise! I think it's normal human psychology to do this.

But back to the OP, I certainly don't think the Coronavirus crisis is over by any means. But lockdown is on the way out (I'm convincing myself!) I think the next review is this Thursday, and I suspect we'll all be given greater freedoms. Which we must enjoy wisely. The Coronavirus crisis began many weeks before lockdown was implemented, and will continue many weeks, months, maybe even years after we're released from it. We'll see. But I do certainly agree that the Coronavirus itself is far from over. Lockdown is soon to be over, or dramatically relaxed I think. I hope!

lasttrain millions of free lancers haven’t received a penny. And they haven’t earned a penny since lock down.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 26/05/2020 08:57

LastTrainEast

I spent the first 3 weeks of "sitting at home" organising my mums funeral, my MH has tanked so much that I'm now back on AD's that I haven't taken for over a year, I've had an e-mail from my employers hinting that I may not have a job to go back to and I've had a 20% drop in my income.....what a "lucky bastard" I am.

HappyMealWithLegs · 26/05/2020 10:16

DippyAvocado Can I ask where you found those figures about new cases? I'm not being snippy, I am just genuinely interested in where to see the latest figures.

DippyAvocado · 26/05/2020 11:01

They're on worldometer Happy Meal. www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

It's updated daily but sometimes you have to look at the previous day's figures as different countries release data at different times.

Completely separate to the thread but numbers in Brazil are looking shocking.

HappyMealWithLegs · 26/05/2020 11:14

Thank you.

Pertella · 26/05/2020 11:16

We're roughly 2 weeks behind Spain. 2 weeks ago they had 3480 new cases in a day and are now showing 482.

ScorpionQueen · 26/05/2020 12:38

Small village about 15 minutes from Weston. I was walking my dog and have never seen so many cars in my village. Blocking farmers' gates and lay-bys meant for passing on country roads, large groups meeting for picnics and kids all playing together. It's really upsetting. Some of my elderly neighbours are frightened to leave their homes.
Just because you can drive to places doesn't mean you should.

Gibble1 · 26/05/2020 22:26

Makes me sad to see all this Weston town and hospital bashing.
