The Weston Super Mare hospital has announced this morning that it's closed it's A&E due to an increase in the number of Covid patients the hospital is currently treating.

This highlights why "tourist" hotspots have been trying to persuade people from away not to visit them.

Also highlights that there are still plenty of Covid cases around and it's still spreading.

This is why the lockdown needs to carry on, with very slight relaxations over a long time period. Those who think it's all over and we can get back to normal are deluded.

@CountessFrog you're brave Grin

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 16:28

Also, Weston, do you respect traditions and culture elsewhere? Or do you stay in Weston?

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 16:28

😂

Comingoutontop123 · 25/05/2020 16:28

@Westonsupermarebeauty

You are making yourself look really silly but carry on.

Educate us to the traditions and culture of Weston.

I'm fascinated. Especially as you seem to have no idea of the demographics of your county or the functioning of your local hospital yet claim to be a school governor.

Could you link to the local guidance in terms of how someone is given that role?

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 16:30

Oh well, I guess there was a time when visitors were welcomed to enjoy Weston and its unique culture.

@Somerville We could hear what sounded like quite a large one coming from the direction of a local park. (In the street where we live most people are at least in their 60s and there are masses of residential and nursing homes around us too. On its own our little block brings the average age down by about 25 years.)

trappedsincesundaymorn · 25/05/2020 16:33

Yep because shopping is all there is in Bristol.

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 16:34

What culture is there that is unique to Weston?

Namely?

The caustic humor of the locals. Mime artists. Live music scene.

Westonsupermarebeauty · 25/05/2020 16:37

Bristol has shopping. Shopping. Shopping. Shopping.
And now that that is gone, With the oncoming recession. You have NOTHING

Comingoutontop123 · 25/05/2020 16:39

Shit. I forgot nowhere else has a live music scene, mime artists (cringe, and not very common in Weston anyway and far more common in other areas) and caustic humour of locals.

It's like another world...

Pertella · 25/05/2020 16:40

You sound positively gleeful at the thought of recession! Do you think Weston wont be affected?

BlusteryLake · 25/05/2020 16:42

Lockdown was never intended to be a long term solution, nor a sustainable one. I am baffled by people who think it will "eradicate the virus" and that we should not emerge until that has happened. It was only ever meant to contain it in the immediate term, which it has done.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/05/2020 16:42

I think Weston is more at risk from the recession than Bristol. Seaside towns usually have higher unemployment than cities.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 25/05/2020 16:43

Westonsupermarebeaut

Apart from the museums, the galleries, the historic buildings, the aqaurium, the zoo, the harbourside walks, the SS great Britain, Clifton Downs, you're absolutely right there's nothing in Bristol, nothing at all. Hmm

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/05/2020 16:43

Who is from Bristol anyway? I missed that. Grin

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 16:44

@Comingoutontop123

Have you actually been to Weston?

Comingoutontop123 · 25/05/2020 16:45

@Westonsupermarebeauty

You need to bow out now and I mean that kindly. You've proven you don't know what you are talking about and the desperate claims about Bristol V Weston are just making you look even more silly.

Name change and forget about it.

Comingoutontop123 · 25/05/2020 16:47

@Madamemarie. Yes. I like it and go every year at least once. I'd love it if you'd tell me there's more that I could be experiencing.

MadameMarie · 25/05/2020 16:50

@Comingoutontop123

So you know it's a good town. It's not just a typical seaside town that was originally stated. The live music scene is among the best of any seaside resort in the UK.

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 16:52

I'm baffled by the many posts complaining about this. Where are all these people saying that? Not on here.

Many, like me, want us to follow the lead of other countries in taking simple measures that would make easing lockdown safer. Mitigate the economic risk and avoid needless deaths. We could've done it all well before now.

I think Weston is more at risk from the recession than Bristol. Seaside towns usually have higher unemployment than cities
Wfh is the way forwards. Any job that can be done from home - and there are many - should be encouraged. Also helps resolve the problem of overcrowded expensive cities.

CrystalTipped · 25/05/2020 16:54

Just dont expect a welcome when you do turn up.
Go home

And this is when you get a chorus of "You don't own the beach you know! We are entitled to sit on the beaches, and shit on the beach, and leave our rubbish on the beach, and take our asymptomatic selves to your shops and infect the elderly, and cause fires because our selfish selves can't be arsed to properly extinguish our crappy portable bbq's. You don't own the bins and benches in your town you know, we're all allowed to destroy them! We all pay for the fire service, you're not special!"

Does that cover it all?

Comingoutontop123 · 25/05/2020 17:01

@Madamemarie

I'd love it if you could link to live bands playing in Weston that don't ever play in larger towns/cities.

I like Weston but it would be silly of me to pay for overnight accomodation to enjoy bands in Weston when I could have a great night closer to home and just pay for a taxi.

It would seem odd to me that popular live bands would just be playing in Weston as it's so small.

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 17:01

Christ. Went away to top up the paddling pool and returned to an alternative universe where Weston is a hotbed of culture, Bristol is a shithole.

And this person from Weston is hoping Bristol goes down the pan.

Fucks sake

IcedPurple · 25/05/2020 17:07

And this person from Weston is hoping Bristol goes down the pan.

I'd imagine day-trippers from Bristol make up a large part of the tourism business which so many people in Weston depend on. If the economy of Bristol were to collapse, that would have a major knock-on effect on Weston. Is all that wonderful indigeneous culture to survive without people to enjoy the unique mime artists and independent music scene?

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/05/2020 17:08

Well this thread has inspired me. I'm going to read up on the history of Weston.
