Interesting article. Especially the graph showing the true figures of your chance of death against your annual risk of am death anyway.

We need to get back to normal- now.

Those who want to stay locked up and crippling the economy would still be free to do so

the problem with these posts is that they don't differentiate between particular precautions people take that affect no one else (I don't wash my shopping but couldn't care less if you someone else does) and a legitimate concern about how we get things moving again.

So, like OP, I think for the vast bulk of it, the danger is not that severe even if we do get it. However, it's clear that the danger IS very severe for some people and that allowing it to run rampant through the country is not going to help those people, so imposing social distancing and other measures to limit the spread seem sensible. It also seems sensible as a way to prevent the outlying deaths - the very occasional person who has no obvious indicators of being high risk but nonetheless gets it and dies.

But ridiculing people who are scared seems pointless. And when you consider how little the government has done to encourage any sense of trust in what they say, I honestly can't blame people. If we had a credible government with clear messaging, I might be more sympathetic to people frustrated with others who seem to overstate the risk. But with the mixed messages and the clear feeling that we're all being lied to/kept in the dark.... well, I even question my own beliefs about Covid 19.

IncrediblySadToo · 25/05/2020 12:04

interesting article

You clearly don't read much.

CatteStreet · 25/05/2020 12:05

We don't wash our shopping because i) the virus being able to survive on a surface does not necessarily mean it is able to cause infection, ii) it's far from being a significant transmission route and iii) over-sterility in one's environment carries its own risks and is not good for one's immune response in general (obviously if we had health vulnerabilities in the family, we might have made a different decision there). But I have always washed hands after coming in from outside and after unpacking shopping 8and made everyone else in the family do so too). Been quite surprised at the number of people this wasn't a 'thing' for pre-coronavirus.

'We wash our shopping because we want to reduce the potential risk' does not, in my view, = panic merchant. 'We wash our shopping and if you don't you are likely to kill your family/leave your children orpahned' = panic merchant. I suspect the majority of shopping-washers don't make that sort of comment and just get on with it quietly.

CatteStreet · 25/05/2020 12:05

I can spell 'orphaned'.

Itwasntme1 · 25/05/2020 12:08

I also think op has missed that we all live in areas with very different infection rates. I live in a hot spot and I know quite a few people who have had the virus, and one who has sadly died.

My parents are high risk and I think right to wash their shopping if that makes them feel safer. They aren’t hurting anyone - leave them be.

hfrdgftcsdg · 25/05/2020 12:08

My life has been pretty much unchanged! It’s mad how far people have taken this. Now the lockdowns eased I’m pretty much back to normal. I’ve never really done anything different at all 🤷🏻‍♀️

iVampire · 25/05/2020 12:10

The article is really talking about different ways those in normal health can think about balancing risk

It is big speaking to the vulnerable or the exceptionally vulnerable, for whom the risk/benefit balance is considerably different

ravenmum · 25/05/2020 12:10

Glad to hear that none of your close relatives have died, @hfrdgftcsdg 👍

jugglingbeans · 25/05/2020 12:13

My life has been pretty much unchanged

Well bully for you.

whitesoxx · 25/05/2020 12:13

The washing poshing stopping merchants?

What?

ravenmum · 25/05/2020 12:15

Has Givenupno given up?

RiftGibbon · 25/05/2020 12:19

It's not just about contracting the virus though is it? If you are asymptomatic how do you know you have contracted it? How do you guarantee that you won't pass it on to someone in your family, circle of friends, colleagues?
Normal needs to change.

SauvignonBlanche · 25/05/2020 12:28

I don’t was mine but have no interest if anyone else does, I agree with
@FoolsAssassin that
People shopping washing behind closed doors has as little effect on you as their sexual practices Grin

It doesn’t have any effect on me so it’s none of my business, what does piss me off is people wearing to same pair of latex gloves to do their shopping - manky bastards! If you’re going to wear PPE do it properly. Hmm

Laundrywoman · 25/05/2020 12:29

Has Givenupno given up?

Looks like it.
Gone for a name change too I expect.

MashedSpud · 25/05/2020 12:30

Op, in the nicest possible way.....live your own life and stop being overly concerned what others choose to do. 😉

2468whodoyouappreciate · 25/05/2020 12:37

Does it matter what people choose to do in their own homes. Why the vitriol OP?

Unless your neighbours bang drums whwn their groceries arrive or sound an air raid siren as they wipe it down why are so you get up about it?

In context my friend lives alone in a cottage in the arse end of nowhere. Walks her dog on her ownnland. Went 1 trip since lockdown to a supermarket. Was out a matter of hours. Straight there and straight home. Now has CV. Was it at the Supermarket or was iron something that came into her home. The risk is tiny but its there. If you get it, you get it!

I can't get her up about that.pwoplw do in their own homes if it impacts nomone else. Try being a bit kinder and more thoughtful. Cleaning groceries is one way some people feel.some control maybe??
It's not for? Fine , so don't do it. Why the need to mock people who do??

Mbc124 · 25/05/2020 12:41

Personally I hope people keep staying In. More room for me at the shops, on the roads and hopefully at the airport and on planes when they start up again!

derxa · 25/05/2020 12:45

We've not been to the shops. So you've taken a delivery slot from a vulnerable person.

Givenupno · 25/05/2020 12:48
  • Has Givenupno given up?”

Nope. Just been out to get some sniping, meet a friend and have an ice cream on the beach. Not sit at home on a beautiful day washing shopping.

The point of the post (although granted title was a bit off) was to show some people that the risk to the vast majority of us is tiny, and that in my opinion we are way past the point where the economic impact (never mind the mental impact) of the current restrictions far outweigh the risks of the virus, which we have probably mostly had or will get in the next few months regardless of what precautions we take.

OP posts:
Lumene · 25/05/2020 12:49

If you want people to listen to your point of view you probably shouldn't start by insulting them.

Someone should pin this to the top of the internet @foamrolling

SauvignonBlanche · 25/05/2020 12:54

Did you really think that this was the best way
to show some people that the risk to the vast majority of us is tiny, and that in my opinion we are way past the point where the economic impact (never mind the mental impact) of the current restrictions far outweigh the risks of the virus

Is it the mental impact of other people washing their shopping that is bothering you? Hmm

airbags · 25/05/2020 12:55

So where has the nasty, judgemental, goady OP gone?
I wash my shopping - cancer, hepatitis, 3 young kids. I'd rather be here for them so if I want to wash my shopping that's my business - judgemental twat!!
Last time I checked a journalist isn't qualified in statistical modelling, infection control, public health, epidemiology, etc etc....and I'm guessing the same applies to the OP. Go disappear back under your rock and leave the vulnerable alone.

Givenupno · 25/05/2020 13:05
  • So where has the nasty, judgemental, goady OP gone? ”

Out for the morning. See three posts above yours.

To those suggesting I caught it because I didn’t wash my shopping, I think it’s more likely it was on a trip somewhere in February.

Either on one of twelve flights, in the Canaries, in London, or in Manchester.

Fortunately your opinion counts for nothing.
