Government won't talk to GMB and This Morning!!

Disneylover4321 · 11/05/2020 20:20

I was watching GMB and This Morning today and they were talking about how the government press team wouldn't talk to either shows.
Surely this isn't acceptable??
The government can't just hide and not be interviewed?

I think the issue is two fold.

Interviewers in many cases seem to want a battle instead of information.

Interviewees (ministers) refuse or are unable to answer questions is a succinct, clear manner.

So now we have bun fights and aggression.

Footywife · 12/05/2020 09:16

I don't blame them. Piers Morgan has become more and more bullish as lockdown has continued. I actually had to switch off yesterday because he was even shouting rubbish over the others when they were trying to tell viewers what was coming up after the break.

The government have other, more credible ways, of getting information out there.

OceanOrchid · 12/05/2020 09:20

As others have said there are only so many ways to say you still cannot meet family members.

This is EXACTLY the problem. The government have said you can meet family members as long as you do so one at a time and in an outdoor public place, keeping 2m apart. Yet the message isn’t getting through because government ministers are unable to give straight, correct answers when asked by the press (including Raab who a couple of weeks ago was in charge, so hardly a junior minister). The government’s response to that is to stop dealing with the press. It’s cowardly and indicates deep incompetence (the correct response would be to make sure cabinet members know the flipping rules).

KuckFnows · 12/05/2020 09:24

The media twist and distort information to suit their own liberal agendas.

They have been appalling through this crisis.

Social media hasn't been much better and also this site, with such a large left-leaning audience. Some of the comments that I've read on here lately about the Prime Minister and Government have been absolutely vile.

No, I don't blame the government at all for not taking to Piers Morgan.

cyclingmad · 12/05/2020 09:25

I was using an example pre sunday statement

Incontinencesucks · 12/05/2020 10:07

Well they a) need to make sure they are all on the same page. Some advisors statements have since been corrected. B) they don't want harrangung over a flavour of month opinion.

The media is not the publics friend. Some places have behaved terribly. Sensationalism, scaremongering, blaming. And a lot of those doing that deserve to be hauled over coals themselves. People who agree with gmb opinions are demanding media attention, but would you if the opinion was opposite? Most people seem to cherry pick when it comes to their own opinions getting more air. We are all guilty of that.

It is only the day that things change slightly today. If next week they are avoiding media, yes I'd wonder but the day of change? It's all about grabbing headlines now.

I like gmb and piers, i dislike the tories however some of the media is deflecting from their own behaviour here too and should be supporting for at least a couple of days then taking to task. And someone should be taking those scare mongers and those who made it appear lockdown was over equally to task

Sparklingbrook · 12/05/2020 10:08

It’s on This Morning right now.

Whattodowhattodooo · 12/05/2020 10:09

Because GMB and This Morning are shite.

Sparklingbrook · 12/05/2020 10:10

Matt Hancock is being grilled by Phil & Holly now.

Disneylover4321 · 12/05/2020 10:13

@sparklingbrook
Good.

Piers doesn’t ask the questions I want answering.

jasjas1973 · 12/05/2020 10:16

Shocking that there are still people who are so deferential that they think the job of journalists is to just parrot government information.

Morgan may not be everyone's cup of tea but Emily Matlis? R4's Nick Robinson?

The Govt obviously want a compliant media, as do many of the population :(

chomalungma · 12/05/2020 10:21

Maybe Matt Hancock should do a MN webchat?

Sparklingbrook · 12/05/2020 10:21

Did anyone watch?

maddy68 · 12/05/2020 10:27

Complete hiding. The Welsh and Scottish first minister have been on this week. Just shows that this government avoids scrutiny

TheFairyCaravan · 12/05/2020 10:31

Matt Hancock is being grilled by Phil & Holly now.

It was not a bloody grilling which is why he went on.

Sparklingbrook · 12/05/2020 10:35

Oh sorry.

Egghead68 · 12/05/2020 10:48

Matt Hancock is the fall guy.

moonset · 12/05/2020 11:35

Yes Morgan does ask the questions that we all want answering and I agree that no party or Govt should be allowed to pick and choose who it does interviews with or sends statements to.

What a ridiculous statement! You're either an opposition party Spad on the wind-up or you've got a woefully inadequate knowledge of how government communications works.

What about all the other crap TV shows out there? Why stop at only the few you mention Confused

nanbread · 12/05/2020 13:20

The media twist and distort information to suit their own liberal agendas.

@KuckFnows yes, like the Daily Mail playing down the UK death toll and baiting the public into relaxing lockdown themselves. Ditto the Express, Sun etc.

Not sure I'd describe their agenda as "liberal" though.

Matt Hancock was on the BBC this morning.

I don't blame people avoiding Piers & Susannah. Especially Susannah, who actually grins and gurns at "approved" guests. It's nauseating and very unprofessional.

1forsorrow · 12/05/2020 19:13

It's not hiding it just doesn't want to be on some crap TV shows being interviewed by people who don't know how to interview properly No they just want to be on shows where they don't get tough questions or pulled up when they don't answer the question.

derxa · 12/05/2020 19:14

yes, like the Daily Mail playing down the UK death toll They're screaming like banshees about the death toll.
