So if you can’t work from home you should go to work.

Does that apply to the beauty industry or hospitality industry or what?

@tigerbear

Estate agents walk in stores would class as retail but the act of a single estate agent as a tradesperson going to a home, taking photos and measurements would be acceptable under the guidelines.

They could write up particulars and adverts online.

They wouldn't be able to facilitate visits and tours of houses as that would be multiple people in a confined space so difficult to social distance, but could host virtual tours online, address queries by phone, hold video meetings etc

I've only just watched his speech and the question that springs to mind is, how on earth can he say that more than 30 thousand deaths and rising means 'we have avoided catastrophy'. No we fucking haven't you useless, incompetent, over privileged shite.

msmith501 · 11/05/2020 11:36

As the proof of the pudding is often in the eating so to speak - and I'm applying this poor analogy to how much people understood or wanted to understand Boris's message last night - I shopped in Tescos today. I have no idea why were asked to disinfect our shopping trolley handles or follow the arrows or social distance. It was almost as if the pandemic had never happened. I especially liked the woman who was picking up one bunch of bananas after another, giving them a feel and putting them back. Made me feel so safe... and she's allowed to vote apparently! We're in save hands....

@MashedPotatoBrainz that really did stand out to me as well. This government thinks 30,000 deaths isn't a catastrophe, how little they value lives.

Did you both miss the part where he said without the lockdown there would've been half a million deaths?

Stellaris22 · 11/05/2020 17:33

Didn't miss that, nope. But saying 30,000 deaths (plus) isn't a catastrophe is wrong and shows zero emotional intelligence.

But he didn't say 30,000 deaths "isn't a catastrophe" did he?

He stated that avoiding half a million deaths is avoiding a catastrophe and who can argue with that (though I'm pretty sure it won't stop someone on MN trying)

WTF was that all about?
Stellaris22 · 11/05/2020 18:06

what could have been a catastrophe

That IS saying it isn't a catastrophe.

Stellaris22 what could have been a catastrophe

No it is not

For goodness sake. Since when was editing out half a sentence acceptable when quoting someone? Especially about something as serious as this

He says "in which" straight after the word "catastrophe"

Quote [new paragraph]
"It is a fact that by adopting these measures we prevented this country from being engulfed by what could have been a catastrophe in which the reasonable worst case scenario was half a million fatalities"
[end of paragraph]
