So if you can’t work from home you should go to work.

Does that apply to the beauty industry or hospitality industry or what?

OP posts:
JKScot4 · 10/05/2020 20:02

Furlough payments will be abruptly halted as it will be your choice not to go to work.
For that idiot to stand and say “we protected the NHS” when 200+ staff have died is fuckin shameful.

feelsoshitnow · 10/05/2020 20:03

@JKScot4 Explain how it is my DH's or his colleagues choice to go to work (read my post before yours)?

Babyroobs · 10/05/2020 20:03

People can go back to work if safe to do so but still no nurseries open and not much public transport ?? It's just not going to work is it?

Flaxmeadow · 10/05/2020 20:04

They don't read so well, neither

Nope, they just complain at every single thing they say they didn't understand Grin

Flaxmeadow · 10/05/2020 20:06

For that idiot to stand and say “we protected the NHS” when 200+ staff have died is fuckin shameful

NHS staff are slightly less likely to die than the general population

LaurieFairyCake · 10/05/2020 20:06

Yes, your cleaner can come - it's her workplace

Yes, you can drive to exercise

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 10/05/2020 20:06

If you’d been building it up to this big moment when massive changes would be announced you haven’t been paying attention, or only paying selected attention to certain Daily Mail stories.

What a load of patronising bollocks.

allyjay · 10/05/2020 20:07

I don't really get the confusion, surely that was a back to work and lifting the lockdowm message . I'm surprised by any other conclusion.

Oddbutnotodd · 10/05/2020 20:07

That was too vague. The work situation is not very clear at all. Are all the transport companies geared up for the rush back to work tomorrow?? Are we staying alert for what??

JKScot4 · 10/05/2020 20:08

@feelsoshitnow
He’s not been told they can’t work so the government can use that as a reason to stop furlough, supposedly being announced in next few days.
This is all about ££, the Tories do not give. a shit, if say for example half of Covid deaths are ppl recieving at a minimum state pension that’s a saving of £127m pa.

LouiseHumphreys81 · 10/05/2020 20:08

I didn't think he said you had to go to work tomorrow. I heard you should actively be looking at ways to go back to work if you can't world from home as long as your work place has been made covid safe. There will be more guidance and filling in the gaps tomorrow. I also took the statement "if you can go back to work" to mean if you weren't at home with children, but he could have made that clearer. O do think it will all be fleshed out tomorrow.

Noextremes2017 · 10/05/2020 20:10

I thought the Tories were supposed to be the party that understood business? These clowns don't seem to have a clue how supply chains work.

How the fucking hell are manufacturing businesses supposed to restart when their distribution channels and retail outlets are shut. That is GCE standard economics Johnson.

Did he get this advice from the idiotic scientists on SAGE and just follow it without engaging his brain?

Has he still got a brain after Covid-19?

Did he have one before?

Fettfrett · 10/05/2020 20:10

It is up to employers to look at their workplaces and see if they can adapt their premises to operate safely. Its ridiculous to think the government can advise yes or no for specific roles on a blanket basis without inspecting every workplace in the country.

The government know they can't sustain the current furlough system for months on end without destroying the economy for generations to come. They are trying to strike a balance between getting people back to work and maintaining safety and largely it is down to employers to act responsibly and sensibly as to whether asking people to work is possible.

OldQueen1969 · 10/05/2020 20:11

So my shop is non-essential - I get it - no-one needs the stuff I sell to survive. However, the income from the shop is essential to sustain paying the overheads and to prevent bankruptcy - thank fuck for the grant that has temporarily staved that off. It is more essential that my landlord and the utility company gets money than for me. If it all goes tits up I'll be a drain on the economy and claim benefits. I could easily run my shop with social distancing and hygiene measures - hell, footfall was pretty poor before this shit show. I don't want the virus spread, but I can't see that my shop would be a higher risk than a supermarket - in fact way less as I'm there on my own usually and customers come in ones and twos if I'm lucky. Sigh. Talk about a no win situation.

nolovelost · 10/05/2020 20:11

Agree with @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross

kkr168 · 10/05/2020 20:11

I don't see how big construction sites can make themselves covid secure?
Before lockdown my husband was roofing on a huge new build site in London, although he is part of a 2 man team its impossible to avoid the hundreds of construction workers on the same site. They all enter/exit through the same 1 in 1 out turnstile, share toilet/kitchen facilities, they would have to walk past other tradesmen whilst going up the scaffolding. That's if you can even get the materials to do your job, whilst my husband has been home he thought he'd skim our living room walls, he couldn't because there is currently a 6 week wait for plaster!!

feelsoshitnow · 10/05/2020 20:16

@JKScot4 Good point, thank you. I'm confused as The Chancellor said that furlough was until the end of June, yet they're now going to change it? Without safety procedures buss will be death-traps!

I expect the company will fold. This will have a huge affect on families in the future, as they hold school contracts, which are worthless now, and don't pay enough to keep the company afloat...ditto pensioners, they're going to be fucked when all the bus companies go bust!

Skybluepink123 · 10/05/2020 20:19

My teenage DS said the speech reminded him of school assignments where you have a minimum number of words. Boris was rambling just to get the count up!

user1498572889 · 10/05/2020 20:20

I work in a shop that also a white goods repair service. I sell stuff, book repair calls And do accounts. I have no idea if I can go back to work as some of it is shop based and some of it is phone and email based. I don’t know if my engineers can come back to work or not. We cannot WFH.

Noextremes2017 · 10/05/2020 20:21

Good God. I thought the French were stupid but when you look at their detailed plan to end lockdown it is a work of detailed planning. Germany has had businesses open for weeks.

The wankers in charge over here can't string a plan for anything together.

How did we end up with these ignorant clowns running the country?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 10/05/2020 20:22

How can cleaners go to work? To make their workplace safe, you’d need to clean it thoroughly before letting them in - which defeats the point. If you don’t clean it, they are massively at risk.

maria860 · 10/05/2020 20:22

Nothing has changed in my eyes but my workplace will re open according to this construction trade. I'm hoping I will not be required back as I'm pregnant but will they continue to furlough or will i now be signed off sick? I'm more confused then before

SpringBlossomIsBeautiful · 10/05/2020 20:22

@Oddbutnotodd - companies have had this directive since last week.

JKScot4 · 10/05/2020 20:26

@feelsoshitnow
Pensioners? the Tories are steadily depleting them and will carry on, a lot of older ppl are pretty obedient and if the PM says it’s ok then they’ll go out. This is by no means over.

Smileyoriley · 10/05/2020 20:29

What an absolute mess. Johnson has looked inept from the start of this crisis, but I am beginning to think he is now totally out of his depth! This is really not looking good for the UK.
