Not that it matters to me personally, being in Scotland but that was just the biggest load of waffley waffle.
Not even a mention of meeting other households.

@lyralalala surely if it was about freight they could just confine it to humans? Also the “coming from France” exemption announced by Downing St would cover much of the ferry/tunnel movement anyway.

Derbygerbil · 10/05/2020 20:45

We live in Greater London, a 31 mile commute to the City where we all work. Does he seriously think we’d be paying in excess of £2000 a year for a season ticket to stand on a dirty sweaty train for 40 minutes each way if we could walk or cycle instead?

I can’t imagine why most places in the City won’t stay shut. The message is still clear that you should continue to work from home if you are able to do so.

bambam2017 · 10/05/2020 20:46

What an absolute joke when are they going to realise and large majority of the population - hereby known as the stupid brigade have been socialising and hanging out with family, friends for weeks! VE Day celebrations lets all hang out together - it’s fine because we are just making sure the old folk are ok and keeping spirits up by coughing are lurgy on one another - touching shit and passing it about!!! It’s fine though !!!! Arggg. No way my boy - nearly 6 going back till I think it’s safe and the appropriate procedures are in place for everyone’s safety and wellbeing.

MrsHound · 10/05/2020 20:48

Boris has reverted to his original plan. This is herd immunity by stealth. People who cannot work from home should be actively encouraged to return to work! You can't visit the relatives but as of tomorrow Boris wants millions back to work.
What a cockwomble

lyralalala · 10/05/2020 20:49

@LarkDescending If it was humans then it would include lorry drivers coming from the likes of Holland.

I'm giving in on trying to work it out. Boris categorically said you can only meet in the park or play sports with your own households or face a higher fine, but apparently now there's been a briefing to journos that you can meet one person - a fundemental change thats apparently been left out of the public announcement.

It's as clear as mud this stuff.

tenterden · 10/05/2020 20:50

beltane Grin Grin

I haven't seen a police officer stopping people/walking around for about twenty years.

LizzieSiddal · 10/05/2020 20:50

If he’d made this speech in Parliament, as he should have done, at least he would have had to answer questions about it!

He thinks he’s a politically genius but he just isn’t.

Bathroom12345 · 10/05/2020 20:50

Lemon. I agree. Furlough has been great (and I think we will look back and agree it was the right thing to do) but some people really like it, no commuting costs, no lunches, time with the kids, time to take up hobbies. Hence the reluctance to do anything very much.

Chillipeanuts · 10/05/2020 20:50

Yes there was: play sports but only with your own household.

tenterden · 10/05/2020 20:51

I can't wait to see the press conference.

Do you think he will dodge it?

Deblou43 · 10/05/2020 20:51

Basically nothing has changed really people keep bashing Boris but no one knows what is going to happen with this virus and no one has had to deal with a pandemic

JingleCatJingle · 10/05/2020 20:52

I’m sad that English people are being asked to sacrifice themselves in this way. But then, you did vote for both Brexit and the Tories.

Celan · 10/05/2020 20:53

Another one who thinks it was as clear as mud.

I am going to carry on doing just as I have been doing all along, namely making my own risk assessment and basing my activities on this assessment.

Greenmarmalade · 10/05/2020 20:53

People keep bashing Boris because he is incompetent!

As for the 'play sports, but with your own household'... I ask you. I take it we will see lots of solitary people practising team sports, then. Confused

clumsyduck · 10/05/2020 20:55

I found all of it clear except the returning to work if you can’t work from home .

Millions of people can’t work from home . How will businesses decide if they are allowed to open or not based on such a loose statement ? Or is there more guidance to follow ?

Pomegranatepompom · 10/05/2020 20:55

@Bathroom12345 it would be interesting to survey! Also MN so left leaning, current government would be criticised for anything they do.

Portillista · 10/05/2020 20:55

This is the first Conservative government I have never voted for. I am glad I didn't. Today's non-announcement is shameful.

turnthebiglightoff · 10/05/2020 20:56

Whatever you political leanings, no, he wasn't clear at all as he didn't even mention family interactions once. So yes - clear as day in that he didn't actually mention it once. That's not clear. HTH all those who said he's clear.

Ilovemypantry · 10/05/2020 20:56

@LilacTree1
Pigs???

Pomegranatepompom · 10/05/2020 20:57

@LilacTree1 that’s a really horribly comment

TheSandman · 10/05/2020 20:57

Given these reactions I think I must've been crediting the British public with far too much intelligence!

Always a mistake.

MilkLady02 · 10/05/2020 20:57

For those wondering about work, I would have thought it’s up to your employer to tell you that they have made the appropriate health and safety changes and are ready for you to return. If you’re not sure, why not email your workplace and ask them? They will have had more info than a 15 min briefing on TV! Lots of pp asked about dentists. No change to what’s available now for the foreseeable future as unable to ensure patient safety right now with limited PPE and unable to provide social distancing. But we are getting information appropriate to our line of business and making changes as required, so I would have thought all other workplaces will do the same.

Bathroom12345 · 10/05/2020 20:57

So, all those people who don’t like Tories or Boris? What would you do? I know it’s disappointing you cannot mix households but that isn’t Boris’s fault. It’s the virus who is causing us to live like this
