Not that it matters to me personally, being in Scotland but that was just the biggest load of waffley waffle.
Not even a mention of meeting other households.

You can’t go on holiday. Shock You can drive somewhere to exercise. That’s it.

JinglingHellsBells · 10/05/2020 20:36

Well, it was clear enough to me and a lot of posters here @crimples. I just find there is so much bias on MN that people find fault with anything anyone not in their political tribe says.

tenterden · 10/05/2020 20:36

The outline of it on the BBC says specifically that the Government have said people shouldn't be booking holidays at home or abroad so I reckon weekends will come under that

Yes but if you have a motor home or you wild camp you are not booking a holiday. I won't be doing either but the A30 will be rammed by next weekend. It also means that people who have missed family who are a day trip away will be able to visit them (whilst socially distant in a park on at the beach) and not break the rules.

Muddybootsblister · 10/05/2020 20:36

I thought it was a pretty clear speech, but how quickly will they be able to tell whether phase one has been a ‘success’, which I guess means the numbers don’t spike? Is the R rate based on those testing positive? Presumably primary schools will have to prepare to go back on 1st June but be ready for a last minute change of plan if everyone goes too wild and we go above R1?

lyralalala · 10/05/2020 20:37

Chris Mason from the BBC is the only person reporting the "can meet one person" thing.

RedToothBrush · 10/05/2020 20:37

This seems to be the theory of it. We get 'weather reports' for coronavirus.

www.itv.com/news/2020-05-10/it-is-all-about-the-r-writes-robert-peston/?fbclid=IwAR3BJEJx591EowlRUCc9utUzyuyy_EyyINFbAUoYCGS_GTaOoB9qMxEDe3w
Why Boris Johnson's coronavirus lockdown update is all about the R number - the reproduction number of Covid-19

As for letting us all know how risky it is to step outside the front door, the government's ambition is for the ONS survey of the spread and prevalence of the virus, coupled with data harvested with the NHSX's viral alert app, to generate separate R values initially for individual nations, then in succeeding weeks for regions and finally for our respective local areas.

In theory you will be able to look up the R for Bognor or Arbroath in the way you can currently check the pollen count.

And when that happens, the government should be able to take evasive action at the local rather than national level, to protect the freedoms and health of the majority at the temporary cost of a return to lockdown for the few.

GreytExpectations · 10/05/2020 20:38

His speech was very clear. Not sure if everyone is being a bit thick or just wanting any reason for a moan. He is simply encouraging a slow ease of lockdown. More outdoor time allowed as long as we continue social distancing. Businesses to encourage worker back into work, as long as social distancing can happen. It's really not hard to understand

LillianGish · 10/05/2020 20:39

I think whether or not you go to work will be down to individual employers who presumably will notify their workforce. I thought he was making the point that if you can continue to work from home then you should, but those who can't should try to go back. ie it's ok to do that and you won't be breaking lockdown.

MaggieFS · 10/05/2020 20:39

FFS. I can and am working from home. As is DH. We're as close to isolated as we'll ever be, and there is no way I am going to compromise that by sitting in an office with colleagues before I have visited DM again. (Aware I will likely continue WFH, but what about those who can't).

Also, I completely disagree with pp that vague is good to ensure things aren't done too quickly. Just look at the Irish plan. I think with details and dates, people are more likely to adhere to each stage.

LarkDescending · 10/05/2020 20:39

The Guardian live blog has also reported the “meet one person 2m apart” thing.

Also that quarantine won’t apply to anyone arriving from France.

lyralalala · 10/05/2020 20:39

Go to work, but avoid public transport and what do you do with your children? And who knows who’s supposed to go back to work, it’s Sunday night and people have to have all those answers before tomorrow morning.

Nobody has to have the answers for tomorrow morning. Businesses that can operate safely with the requisite social distancing can, from tomorrow, make their plan to open. That plan will involve knowing what of their staff can get there and who can't because of transport/childcare/isolating etc.

No-one is expected to rock up to work tomorrow after an 7pm speech tonight.

Derbygerbil · 10/05/2020 20:39

I thought it was pretty clear. However, as the workplace stuff is more complex he should given Wednesday not Monday.

My understanding was that if you’re working in an industry that had always been allowed to operate during lockdown (eg construction and manufacturing - these were never forbidden during lockdown) you should get back to work because you never needed to be off in the first place, and those businesses in those industries that furloughed staff had done so unnecessarily.

Notnew · 10/05/2020 20:40

Pretty much the same stay at home no non essential journeys dont meet with anyone not in your household 2 meter distance....

PeanutButterSarnie · 10/05/2020 20:40

I suspect it was 'not very clear' for those who lean to the left and detest Boris.

LemonTT · 10/05/2020 20:41

My view is that those places of work, that have not specifically been told to close, need to prepare to reopen. Why? Fairly obvious, we/ they can’t afford to subside them much further in this phase.

It’s a direct signal that businesses need to get their act together and redesign their workplaces. For workers, it’s a similar signal. Start thinking about how you can safely get to work. Don’t use public transport if there is an alternative. These are businesses that can operate under current rules. It is not all businesses.

Why this and why not allow people to visit their family members? The value of restarting the economy and reducing public expenditure verse the individual pleasure in seeing family members. Having both would impact on the r factor. That’s obvious unless you haven’t been paying attention.

Personally, and you can disagree, I need an income now and in the future. I can forgo seeing loved ones for a bit more time.

ActuallyItsEugene · 10/05/2020 20:41

This sums it up.

Well that was clear as mud, so is meeting family allowed now or what??
lyralalala · 10/05/2020 20:41

I assume the quarantine thing only applying to flights will be because ferries and the Chunnel have so much freight transport. You can't have food stuffs quarantined for 14 days.

Glower · 10/05/2020 20:41

Sam Coates from Sky is also reporting about being able to meet one person from outside the household. But to be clear, the source is an unnamed ‘government official’ not Boris’s speech or any official document.

Crimples · 10/05/2020 20:41

@JinglingHellsBells and to a lot of posters on here it was not so surely a discussion can maybe help throw some points up that might help explain to those in the not understanding camp (like myself) Smile
I don’t personally have any great political affinity either way.

Why is everyone seeking explicit permission.? do what Boris does -if you wanna do it, just do it!

My £5 is on Gove. He's managed to get two mythical rules into people's heads so far with the one hour thing and kids not being allowed to go to the other parents.

He's going for 3/3

LuluJakey1 · 10/05/2020 20:43

I know what I think is sensible and reasonable but he did not spell it out to me.

So we will continue doing what we have been doing - staying at home apart from daily exercise and shopping. No visitors, no visits to others. We might now exercise twice a day. But.....

We could now drive from our house across to the Lakes or the Yorkshire Dales if we fancy it, have a wander round, buy ice creams and fish and chips. Or drive to Scarborough and camp for a few nights. Why? Why not limit us to Northumberland where we live?

BIL, who is an Ed Psych, can't work at home really, is he now to return to work tomorrow, in an office in a building where 400 people work with shared loos, kitchen areas, printers etc and make appointments for children to come in and see him at a distance of 2m? I wouldn't think so but it sounded like it.

Can my hairdresser now cut my hair if we both wear masks and she wears gloves? Sounds like it. She can't work at home so.....

What about churches- can they now hold services if they maintain social distancing?

Can the National Trust open houses as long as they maintain social distancing?

Can DS and DD go to the playground in the park as long as we maintain social distancing?

Can my friend who is a reception/admin manager go back to work tomorrow supervising her team of 10 who hot desk, share printers, copiers, meeting spaces, kitchen, loos?

Is my cousin- works in the City in London as a broker- expected back at work tomorrow. He can't work from home much but his firm closed. Will it be open tomorrow? How will he get there - it is two underground changes and there are reduced trains running? He works for a firm who employ 200+ staff in an old building the the City - they share offices, lifts, loos, kitchen areas.

Can we now sit on a blanket on the beach all day with a picnic while PIL sit 2m from us with their picnic? Can we take some wine and beer?

Can we go out from 8am -midnight now if we feel like it?

It was just vague and woolly and leaves huge gaps for covidiots to drive their tanks through, as well as decent people genuinely being confused.

LilacTree1 · 10/05/2020 20:44

Beltane for the 190th time, because we can’t pay a fine.

And yes, the police are everywhere in my area. I don’t understand why so many MNers can’t see that the fine is the biggest problem.

Glower · 10/05/2020 20:44

To be fair there is a 50 page document coming tomorrow that will give more detail. Not sure why it wasn’t just published straight after the speech though.

Ilovemypantry · 10/05/2020 20:45

I think it needed to spelt out clearer for those people that are already flouting the rules and will do so even more now.
