Disgusted at VE celebrations

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 08:54

I absolutely cannot believe what went on last night in this country.

The government should never have encouraged this nonsense and instead should have firmly nipped the idea of celebration completely in the bud.

Absent Boris should have never implied lockdown will be eased on Monday a couple of days before a fucking sunny VE Day bank holiday when we still have 5,000 plus new cases every day.

It isn't rocket science.

I am absolutely appalled.

Call me a cynic but I suspect this is a strategy of herd immunity by stealth.

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 08:57

The thought crossed my mind but didn't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist!

It's either a strategy or it's absolutely stupidity - genuinely not sure which.

I think I agree with Goat. And even better the govt can then pass the buck and say well we did tell you to stay away from family, so it’s your own fault.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/05/2020 08:57

To be honest I don’t think it’s the anticipation of the ease of lockdown making people socialise more- it’s been 2 months, people have just had enough and are now making their own rules. This was inevitable

cloud1183 · 09/05/2020 08:58

I had to send a twitter message to my local police force at 10:30 as the music was blasting and the beer flowing. They apologised and said they would be unable to come out as they had had 100’s of complaints about lockdown breaches and could even resource the emergencies they were getting. Now they have mixed once they will keep doing it

cloud1183 · 09/05/2020 08:59

I meant ‘couldn’t’

stairgates · 09/05/2020 09:00

Agree with all the above, can anybody honestly tell me that not 1 case was passed through this silly national event. Why wasnt we all told to log on and donate a £1 to a charity in respect instead?

ballsdeep · 09/05/2020 09:01

I'm appalled too. People in the next street and down the bottom of mine started off sitting 2m apart but as the wine flowed they moved closer and closer . In the end I bet they were all sitting in a 2m squared space!! And many over 70, health conditions etc. I hienstly don't know why the government allowed this shit show to continue. News channels were reporting from streets with parties and people were so close it was frightening. When you look at Spain and Italy and their tough restrictions, it makes me shudder to compare our own

Mightymurphy · 09/05/2020 09:01

I am pretty disgusted you called the day nonsense to be honest.

BillywilliamV · 09/05/2020 09:02

Well we had a much needed laugh with the neighbours, so there !

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 09/05/2020 09:02

Why are you appalled?
Every step of the way the government have paid lip service to 'lockdown' and not actually locked anything down.

30 minutes from me is a massive factory that is still open, 3 shifts, 100 people per shift, working shoulder to shoulder and using public transport to move around.
Airport is still allowing flights and no quarantine for people getting off them.
Docks still open and bringing in products from all over the world.
People allowed out and about when they like with little restrictions in place beyond the 2 meter suggestions.
50k plus dead and rising but tests not meeting demand, PPE not being supplied, care homes ignored and deaths not counted.
Etc

Look at it logically. They've been letting this happen, could even say they've encouraged it, whilst trying to make it appear that they're doing something by doing the minimum and throwing out little slogans.

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 09:03

Also proves the infrastructure isn't there to actually police lockdown.

I genuinely believe it is criminal of the government not to have come out strongly on this. Someone on another thread was absolutely lambasted for calling it murder but that's what it is.

Imagine having a celebration to commemorate the brave actions of our elderly and using to spread a virus that kills them. It's astounding.

Well plenty of people managed to abide by the rules. If people are stupid enough to have parties and even more stupid to get so drunk they forget about social distancing then that's down to them

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 09:04

@MonkeyToesOfDoom you make exceptionally valid points

OP posts:
Kitchendoctor · 09/05/2020 09:04

Absolutely OP.

Unfortunately I fear a spike in cases 2 or 3 weeks from now due to people’s ignorance, complacency and stupidity.

Our neighbours decided to invite their extended family to the street party and had all the kids playing on the street, which meant we could no longer distance and had to go inside. Had been fine up until then but as usual a few spoil it for the many.

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 09:05

Maybe but unfortunately their actions have consequences for all of us.

Good. A bunch of drunken idiots hugging each other and dancing and inviting their families round during a global pandemic is absolute nonsense. And fuck all to do with Victory in Europe.

Biscuit
runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 09:08

Oh shut up! People have had enough! It's been 2 months. Let people decide from themselves. As long as you stay locked down you will be okay - just worry about yourself

Wow. The stupidest comment on MN - well done.

NHS? Overwhelmed? Unfortunately the decisions idiots make have consequences for us all.

I have no choice but to go to work so my fault and I rely on the common sense of others.

Great I'm alright jack attitude from you though.

OP posts:
GreytExpectations · 09/05/2020 09:09

I don't get why you are outraged? We chose not to join in but my village had loads of celebrations but the 2m rule and social distancing were all observed very well. Or do you disagree with any form of happiness right now?

Goatymcgoaty · 09/05/2020 09:09

It all fits doesn’t it. No quarantining at uk airports - it’s not that they can’t manage to arrange this, is it. They’re the government of a rich country! They can easily put all incomers into 2 weeks quarantine in airport hotels. But they did nothing.

And the Sage bloke who broke the rules and defended it by quoting his “immunity”. The scientific community must be pretty sure that immunity is gained after having the virus.

They want it to spread. They’ve just slowed the pace a bit so the nhs doesn’t collapse. I don’t think much has actually changed since Boris told us in March that your granny may die but oh well.

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 09:10

No I disagree with people trying their hardest to 1. Extend lockdown and 2. Do everything they can to overwhelm the NHS they clap for every Thursday

OP posts:
livefornaps · 09/05/2020 09:10

@ItsAllForYou, it's that type of attitude that's gonna lead us all up shit's creek

RandomlyChosenName · 09/05/2020 09:12

It’s horrible for those working in the NHS, but if those who’ve been partying up close to their neighbours today get Covid now, that’s there own fault. Lockdown has allowed a majority of the country to be able to keep themselves safe if they want to. If idiots want to volunteer to get herd immunity for the rest of us, then I guess so be it.

Our curve has flattened now. No longer are our cases and deaths decreasing. I can’t think they’re all NHS and care home deaths now. It’s still spreading in the community of stupidity.
