Disgusted at VE celebrations

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 08:54

I absolutely cannot believe what went on last night in this country.

The government should never have encouraged this nonsense and instead should have firmly nipped the idea of celebration completely in the bud.

Absent Boris should have never implied lockdown will be eased on Monday a couple of days before a fucking sunny VE Day bank holiday when we still have 5,000 plus new cases every day.

It isn't rocket science.

I am absolutely appalled.

So we can go with the herd immunity idea while still not Overwhelming the nhs.. You don't go and build 6 new hospitals while hoping cases will be much lower

I'd love to know how they expect to staff them - and where the PPE is coming from.

madcatladyforever · 09/05/2020 09:37

I hung flags in my window and stayed inside.
VE day is important to me because my grandparents were in both wars and they were so brave.
But I,m exposed to it at work in the NHS as it is, I'm not going to street parties as well and risk spreading it to families and kids.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 09/05/2020 09:37

It absolutely is a typical English mindset that alcohol is necessary to create the “we’re so great” type celebrations which is not what yesterday should be about.

I completely agree with this.
Football... Drink.
Christmas... Drink.
Birthdays... Drink.
Bank holidays... Drink.

FFS it only has to be a Friday night and it's a justification to get so pissed they can barely walk, throw up everywhere and cause trouble in town centres.

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 09:38

How long do you want lockdown to continue? Do you think the current situation is sustainable? Economically? Practically?*

When we have 5,000 new cases every day (recorded), when the R is only slightly below one, and when there are still hundreds of deaths a day, a drunken conga with tens of neighbours isn't appropriate.

I bet everyone here who breaks lockdown, like @ItsAllForYou and the people hugging and sitting together at VE PARTIES, ALL have rainbow pictures and SAVE THE NHS signs in their windows.

SusieOwl4 · 09/05/2020 09:38

@runrunrunrunt

Where did the government encourage the breaking of the rules ? They made it quite clear in the briefings that the rules were still in place ?

If people were celebrating in a way that is against the lockdown then that is their stupid decision not the government.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 09/05/2020 09:39

You'd have to call me a cynic too then Goaty.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/05/2020 09:39

To be honest I find the shock and despair at the parties a bit ironic when I read on lots of mn threads “oh we still see my mil but she’s by herself and me and my husband only pop round to cut the grass and have a cup of tea”....there’s been plenty of people flouncing the rules with their own justification for weeks.
Enough is enough now anyway- time to ease back to everyday life, this virus isn’t gonna anywhere.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 09/05/2020 09:39

Whatever the rights and wrongs of 'celebrations' for the VE Day 75th Anniversary, I just felt very sorry for the veterans who had all the events and parties and general jollity cancelled. I imagine most of them had been looking forward to the day for years. VE Day 76th Anniversary doesn't have the same ring or significance, does it?

RyanStartedTheFire · 09/05/2020 09:39

PinkSparklyPussyCat
Imagine going onto a Covid ward and expressing that feeling.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 09/05/2020 09:39

I feel like the mixed messages about lockdown ending on Monday were done on purpose. As bad as this sounds you want a second wave before flu season hits in October. The reason the Nightingale hospitals were built is for the winter when the shit really hits the fan in the NHS.

I live on a main road and it rained so no-one came out and I don't think anyone had any plans to.

SusieOwl4 · 09/05/2020 09:40

The celebration was not disgusting and as long as it happened within the distancing rules I can’t see a problem .

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/05/2020 09:40

@KermitRulesOk maybe they'll need to apologise to me, who knows. We all had a choice or do you think I forced them to join in?

BovaryX · 09/05/2020 09:40

@runrunrunrunt

Your opinion of Boris is just that. Yours. The recently elected government doesn't just step down because you don't like them. How long do you want lockdown to continue? Do you think it's sustainable to expect people in a liberal democratic to remain on house arrest for months? For years? Do you understand the consequences of economic paralysis?

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/05/2020 09:41

Well plenty of people managed to abide by the rules. If people are stupid enough to have parties and even more stupid to get so drunk they forget about social distancing then that's down to them
This, exactly. It's not the VE day celebrations that are the problem it's certain people. We managed to do it in my road and keep social distancing and I'm sure most people did. People in Care Homes celebrated too, many of their inhabitants can probably remember VE Day, why shouldn't they be allowed a party.

tootyfruitypickle · 09/05/2020 09:41

@ilovehalloumi

I’m in same sit as you and our street party was like this too. V unlikely that anything was spread even when distances were occasionally breached to be 1m apart. We were outside, no touching or getting any closer than 1m I’m quite certain.
Mental health is important .

returnofthemollymawks · 09/05/2020 09:41

You didn't have to take part if you didn't want to but I am so so so glad we did.

Will you still be glad when you/your daughter are in intensive care? Would you and say what you have said here to a group of NHS staff working on the front line? Biscuit

RyanStartedTheFire · 09/05/2020 09:41

"Fuck the NHS staff who are catching Covid from constant exposure, I really needed a party." Hmm

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 09:42

Where did I say I didn't like him? He's ineffective. A very poor leader. I'm allowed my opinion as are you. I'm aware my opinion is my own. Not sure what you're getting at.

OP posts:
TabbyMumz · 09/05/2020 09:43

"I think Boris's days are numbered and I actually think for the good of the country he should bow out now."
I think you are wrong on this. They've done great, million times better than Corbyn would have done. It's been very timely managed, kept us all informed, daily briefings, etc, given us all the figures etc I'm not sure what is is you think he's done wrong.

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 09:43

And I'm not suggesting the government should just fucking fold and roll over. I'm saying he's not the figurehead required.

OP posts:
SusieOwl4 · 09/05/2020 09:43

I think people are reading the papers and not listening to the briefings.thats where the mixed messages are coming from .

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/05/2020 09:44

They'll be looking to see what spike happens in cases in 3 weeks time, and then hospital admissions a week or two later.

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/05/2020 09:44

#cynical

BirdieFriendReturns · 09/05/2020 09:44

Technically we don’t have “hundreds of deaths a day though.” They are backdated. www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/05/COVID-19-total-announced-deaths-8-May-2020.xlsx

That doesn’t take into account deaths in the rest of the U.K. or care homes but indicates what’s happening in English hospitals. To add some perspective.
