Disgusted at VE celebrations

I absolutely cannot believe what went on last night in this country.

The government should never have encouraged this nonsense and instead should have firmly nipped the idea of celebration completely in the bud.

Absent Boris should have never implied lockdown will be eased on Monday a couple of days before a fucking sunny VE Day bank holiday when we still have 5,000 plus new cases every day.

It isn't rocket science.

I am absolutely appalled.

@TabbyMumz

Well said , he has not been leader for long and if one thing comes out of this I personally hope they look at the nhs trust structure which I do think has failed in certain respects. ( not bought in by conservatives btw)

CrunchyCarrot · 09/05/2020 09:52

I think it would have been a lot better if we'd been encouraged to participate in online/television VE day celebrations and programs rather than street parties, which really shouldn't be happening. I suppose we'll find out in 2-3 weeks whether this event has sparked an upsurge in cases.

CodLiverOil556 · 09/05/2020 09:52

I can only write about what I'm seeing - we, as a crematorium, are running at maximum capacity. In the 10 years I've been doing my job have never seen before (even winter flu time) We are booked up full til the 22 May and having spoken to funeral directors this won't ease til at least June. The people who phone me and say they are disgusted because they can't go to a loved ones funeral are probably the people who attended a party yesterday. I can't see why we can't follow a very simple set of rules!

ssd · 09/05/2020 09:52

@runrunrunrunt, apologies, that comment wasn't for you, posted in error.

underneaththeash · 09/05/2020 09:53

He's doing fine. We have a similar trajectory to other countries with a similar population size, but without the massive lock down they had.

We did not have any PPE, but neither did most other nations. We did not have enough testing capability and that's due to the rationing that our free healthcare demands.

I've not seen any house parties on facebook and just had a google and couldn't see any on there. Most of the streets in our village had a toast at 3/5.30pm for 30 minutes and the households stayed 1m apart from each other.

Your post just sounds like any loony left attempt to criticise the government and a time when everyone needs to pull together. Look to the new labour leader who is commenting constructively.

ineedaholidaynow · 09/05/2020 09:53

Even if lockdown is eased, social distancing will still be required. We are just not going to go back to normal.

Parties where everyone abided with social distancing are fine, but typically with a number of people in this country those rules didn’t apply to them, they can do what they want and everyone else should shut up.

If the numbers spike either lockdown will be extended or made stricter. Maybe we will go down the route of some countries like Italy and Spain, where you had to justify why you had come out of the house and be heavily fined if you infringe the rules. Instead of schools opening maybe we will have to go down the route of Spain and keep children locked indoors for 6 weeks. Not sure that will help people’s mental health.

LockdownLoppy · 09/05/2020 09:53

I agree that many people are just plain stupid and that the government message was wishy-washy and they should not have given the impression that lockdown was almost over!!!
The VE day celebrations in my village were, as far as I can tell from social media, friends and what I saw myself, very safely done. We had a picnic on the lawn and saw others do the same - everyone maintaining social distancing. My parents are near neighbours and joined us for a bit at a safe distance away on the lawn - it was a lovely afternoon and one we will long remember. Lifted the spirits and no one put at risk.

ssd · 09/05/2020 09:54

It was for @TabbyMumz

PhilSwagielka · 09/05/2020 09:54

I don't understand what's so hard about just sticking to your own home area and celebrating there. Or doing what other people here did and sitting in your front gardens while keeping enough of a distance. You can celebrate without gathering together in the street and having a communal buffet and getting drunk off your tits.

Lovemusic33 · 09/05/2020 09:54

My Facebook feed is full of photos this morning of people who had street parties in their front gardens, people sat in the garden with people not from their households and people chatting in the streets. My neighbour had a friend over in her garden yesterday afternoon and today they have a friend over helping with some work in the garden.

I have seen many posts on Fb this week of people breaking the social distancing rules, it seems they don’t even realise or they don’t care?

My kids haven’t seen their day for 8 weeks, I haven’t seen my family for even longer but it seems a lot of people are mixing with other households be it in the garden or street.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 09/05/2020 09:55

Boris is a blabber mouth basically. He doesnt know when to keep schtum

MindyStClaire · 09/05/2020 09:55

Oh shut up! People have had enough! It's been 2 months. Let people decide from themselves. As long as you stay locked down you will be okay - just worry about yourself.

But I don't want to stay locked down. I want things to slowly start to return to normal, or less not normal at least. I want to see our families, I want DD back in nursery so I can get some work done, I want our parents to meet our new baby when it arrives.

None of that will happen if R increases because people have non socially distanced parties. That will just mean more lockdown for all of us.

HeyBlaby · 09/05/2020 09:55

All out in the street drunk, hugging each other and dancing with arms round each other (different households) One is even a nurse herself, it baffles me.

MarieQueenofScots · 09/05/2020 09:55

I've not seen any house parties on facebook and just had a google and couldn't see any on there

Grin “I didn’t see it so it didn’t happen!”

OneandTwenty · 09/05/2020 09:55

I think that's great - I'd rather the idiots volunteer to be guinea pigs and will be the ones fighting for hospital beds whilst the rest of us managed to have safe street party celebrations, so won't be part of the next wave.

That will just help to prove what relaxing the lockdown is doing. You should be grateful for all the imbeciles, I am.

pussycatinboots · 09/05/2020 09:56

It's either a strategy or it's absolutely stupidity
It won't be a strategy, this is Government we are talking about.
They can't even order PPE that is fit for purpose.

BackInTime · 09/05/2020 09:56

Where did the government encourage the breaking of the rules ? They made it quite clear in the briefings that the rules were still in place

How many people actually watch these briefings? Boris indicated himself in parliament that the lockdown would be eased and the we had leaks to the media that the lockdown would relaxed on Monday followed by a big back-pedal the following day. Is it any wonder people are confused.

@runrunrunrunt

Stop avoiding the question. When should lockdown end? Which specific European model do you advocate? Sweden?

Pelleas · 09/05/2020 09:56

Yet again, the government has messed up by delaying and talking about what they are going to do, rather than actually doing things in a timely way.

Bojo announces that he'll present a 'roadmap' on Sunday - and without knowing what this is, many people just assume lockdown is over and start socialising again.

He should have made his announcement on Thursday, as originally stated, and set out exactly what we can and can't do. But that would have been sensible, so it was never going to happen.

Now, another spike of infections is inevitable and the resumption of true normality has been pushed ever backwards.

Well done, Boris. Not.

CanICelebrate · 09/05/2020 09:57

We had a brilliant day and all at a safe distance. I’m sure many of the people who broke the lockdown rules are people who are doing in anyway and would have had a bank holiday bbq even if it wasn’t VE Day.
We listened to war time music, played instruments, sang and ate with our dc - it was a very special day and we explained to dc just why it was so special. Our whole street was out (thankfully we are spread out enough to all be at a safe distance).

MarieQueenofScots · 09/05/2020 09:57

Boris indicated himself in parliament that the lockdown would be eased and the we had leaks to the media that the lockdown would relaxed on Monday followed by a big back-pedal the following day

I don’t think the message has been clear in general, however in this surely most people are able to understand the use of “would be” as a future indicator not “right, do what you want”?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 09/05/2020 09:58

MilkRunningOutAgain
So your OH works at a port importing food... Well done him.. how about the people still working at the port importing wood from europe for manufacturing kitchens? Food is essential, wood for new kitchens? Not so much surely?

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 09:58

The virus won't discriminate though Oneandtwebty. These people will make us more likely to catch it in our necessary activities like shopping and commuting because they and their actions push up the R rate.

So we could all be fighting for hospital beds if a second peak hits whether we followed the rules or not.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/05/2020 09:58

I don't know where you are @KermitRulesOk and I'm not doubting you but being booked until 22nd May wouldn't be unusual around here, you wouldn't normal be able to book a funeral for 2 to 3 weeks even in normal times. Also, loved ones aren't banned from funerals here either. I know a couple of people have died (not covid related) and their close family is able to attend.

As I said, I'm not doubting you, just saying it's not the same everywhere.

lilgreen · 09/05/2020 09:58

We were on our front gardens, much further than 2m away from neighbours. Disgusted is a bit OTT.
