Kier Starmer

Anyone see him on the news?

Clapping for a few moments for the NHS and then asking the camera crew if they got what they needed.

I was a little disappointed as, although I’m sure it wasn’t, it came across a bit like fake compassion.

On every thread about Keir Starmer someone who claims to have ‘worked under him’ always appears in the first page.

This.

C'm on, Conservative Central Office, think of something a bit more original.

pontypridd · 08/05/2020 00:48

At the risk of introducing substance to the discussion, how do people think he did at PMQs?

Sorry - this is what I was talking about earlier (not Question Time). I saw a bit of PMQs and Keir came across as articulate, well researched, intelligent and compassionate.

It was a relief to finally hear someone calm and measured speak in Parliament. And it was interesting seeing what that did to Boris. It seemed to wrong foot him. He didn't know how to respond.

I'm not a Labour party member and so didn't vote for Keir. But I feel very grateful that finally someone decent is leading the opposition.

Didkdt · 08/05/2020 00:55

There's no substance only vitriol to Labour supporters these days perhaps that's why they can't win an election
Apologise to those who don't believe I had a career that had to start somewhere even if it was under Starmer

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 01:59

The camera man has stated Starmer politely said this because he wanted to get his daughter back in doors away from the media. He experiences the media outside his house and politely says ok have you finished so my daughter can come in privately.

That was all. Pa’s footage backs this up

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 02:01

@recycledteenager24 He doesn’t use the title. He asks not to be addressed as sir. Everyone else used it. He can’t control that.

His mum was a nurse and his dad was a toolmaker. He’s a working class kid who passed his 11+ and worked hard.

Didkdt · 08/05/2020 02:07

Which is a lovely explanation
Me I'd have left my child inside to clap from a window where they could see without being tightly observed Tony Blair did Gordon Brown did even David Cameron did

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 02:35

Why should his child have to stay indoors at a window because of Who her dad is. She’s locked down enough.

It’s not an explanation, you HEAR him mention her on the PA footage. It’s the truth

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 02:36

He mentions her by name. She went to clap away from the press to keep her out of the public eye then he got her back.

Jesus

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 02:37

(Is she went across the road where she wasn’t observed)

Didkdt · 08/05/2020 02:46

My children are locked down more by my health but she's already been shunted away why not let her watch from another location you can argue it to the nth degree but he's put her in the public radar he needs to make sure she's comfortably out of sight

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 02:46

And I clearly remember Cameron’s kids especially the newborn being actually in the press a lot

And this very week our PM’s sixth or seventh child has been huge news with photos released

allthewaterinthetap · 08/05/2020 02:47

Even before I saw the explanation, I could tell Keir (and his wife) were obviously anxious to get their daughter back with them. The mum was doing the standard anxious 'bounce'.

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 02:47

He didn’t put her in the public radar he had her away from the press

My kids are locked down too for my health so you have my sympathies and much empathy. I hope you’re ok

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 02:50

I used to work as a journalist for years and “you’ve got what you need” was always a polite and anxious way of hoping to be left alone without stopping the journalist doing their job. A journalist intruding on your space not one you invited. It’s lingo easily understood not a cynical evil plot

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 02:51

(I was never ever a hack or paparazzi though to be clear!!! I’m glad I’m fully out now.)

Didkdt · 08/05/2020 02:52

1 photo for Boris
Very few for Cameron who knew what Florence looked like between unexpected Cornwall burth and his leaving office
Or the rebuff from labour's press office over criticism of his children's outfits at the cenotaph when their parents had no intention of them being seen or our first glimpse of Gordon Brown's sons as they walked AWAY from number 10.
Nick Clegg's children could also walk along any street and someone even tell me the age of Raabs sons.
If it was a privacy issue Starmer could have managed it better

Vinoisallmine · 08/05/2020 02:56

How comes any criticism of any members of the Labour Party on this site ALWAYS get turned around onto slating the conservatives.

Surely it should be a fair playing field and both parties discussed, even though this site is left leaning.

😐

Casino218 · 08/05/2020 03:01

Why don't to like him? because he doesn't slide down a zip wire in Union Jack underpants? Why is this person I have just described the Prime Minister?

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 03:05

I didn’t turn around to staying the conservatives i responded to the statement that conservatives children are never seen. There’s a huge difference. I didn’t turn it the other poster did. See?

Again. Starmer’s daughter was not pictured. The whole point of this is that he was AVOIDING her bring pictures

This is silly now

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 03:05

Slating not slaying Grin

excitedmumtobe87 · 08/05/2020 03:06

I give up playing chess with pigeons. I’m off to bed.

Night all

The Times are rating Starmer highly - "In Keir Starmer Labour has an heir to John Smith".

(Source: www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/comment/in-keir-starmer-labour-has-an-heir-to-john-smith-9bn52gsjb - not full article)

The Times seems tired of Johnson. Interesting.

Thanks for the fake news, @DBML. Bit of an own goal there.

tootyfruitypickle · 08/05/2020 06:22

Just agreeing with PP as I’m also ex journo - ‘have you got what you need ‘ is a polite way of saying ‘can you go away now’

JudyCoolibar · 08/05/2020 07:17

I must say, watching him at PMQs this week was a treat. Simply by being well prepared and polite, he made Johnson completely expose himself for the incompetent he is.
