Do you think covid started in a wet market?

.....Or accidentally released from a laboratory?

OP posts:
maddiemookins16mum · 04/05/2020 20:52

A Chinese lab.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 04/05/2020 20:52

I agree that it came from the Wuhan Lab too. A natural mutation that they were studying and accidentally released through poor standards of practice or hygiene.

As a side note, I'm surprised that almost everyone on this thread agrees it probably came from the lab. A few weeks ago, if anyone mentioned that theory on here, they were accused of being a conspiracy theorist, well into tin foil hat territory!

I'm interested to know who has changed their mind on this matter recently and why? Is it due to the more recent news coverage?

MagicKingdomDizzy · 04/05/2020 20:55

HermioneWeasley

A few very early cases had no contact with the wet market.

Connie222 · 04/05/2020 20:56

Released.

bathsh3ba · 04/05/2020 20:56

I don't know but am sure the Chinese government have been less than forthcoming with the truth

LastTrainEast · 04/05/2020 21:02

It's plausible that it was natural as all the previous pandemics have been.

Also if I paid someone to make a biological weapon and they only managed CV19 I'd probably fire them. It would be faster to go around hitting people with a big stick.

but if you want a conspiracy then note this information taken from a respectable journal (The Daily Mail) Grin

"... disclosed that the institute had undertaken corona-virus experiments on bats captured more than 1,000 miles away in Yunnan, funded by a $3.7 million grant from the US government"

There you have it. The US paid China to infect themselves so it would then infect the US and then finally the ‎Belgians. They never liked the ‎Belgians.

sleepyhorse · 04/05/2020 21:02

Magic - maybe people are starting to change their mind because Trump said he has seen evidence it came from a lab 😂

OP posts:
StormzyinaTCup · 04/05/2020 21:11

In Trumps defence, he's digging around and asking the questions other leaders are probably thinking but don't have brass cahoonies to ask😊

OneForMeToo · 04/05/2020 21:11

Man made from animals... accidentally set free? I think not. China is very good to be free and selling equipment to all the other countries. Nah... I call coverup. Wouldn’t trust China any more than I’d trust Russia.

RickOShay · 04/05/2020 21:12

From the wet market.
I think China are fudging the true rates of infection and deaths though.

Gallacia · 04/05/2020 21:12

No, I think it was released from a lab. I'm not one of them anti 5g crazies either

ludothedog · 04/05/2020 21:13

Natural. Probably from the market, transmission fro animal to human. One thing is for sure though, China have not been honest about numbers of cases and deaths and tried to cover it up for ages. If they had been more open from the beginning or if they had understood what they were dealing with earlier, and shared that, then outcome may have been different. But I think negligence rather than than a malicious act.

We have been due a pandemic for a whilst. The warning bells about a novel virus have been ringing for a whilst. All this information may be new to us about corona viruses but the risks have been well known to our scientific and health communities as well as our governments.

However, its human nature to look for a scapegoat or to create a conspiracy as its psychologically easier to understand than the boring reality of the frailty of life and our societies.

Sarahandco · 04/05/2020 21:13

I bet the Chinese were happy when they heard trump suggest injecting disinfectant. They probably thought nobody will believe him now! Then he announces that he knows it came from the Lab, but unfortunately for China, a slightly unscientific poll on Mumsnet suggests that 95% believe Trump.

merryhouse · 04/05/2020 21:14

how the fuck should I know?

cinammonbuns · 04/05/2020 21:15

The amount of people on here who believe in conspiracy theories. It’s scary.

What exactly would China have to gain from releasing a virus with a less than 3% fatality rate virus that has made almost every country turn against them. I genuinely want to understand what you guys believe they would gain from it.

Silvergreen · 04/05/2020 21:16

Natural. Just like the many other times this has happened before labs and conspiracy theories were invented.

Moondust001 · 04/05/2020 21:18

Of course, Mums Net posters are qualified enough and in full possession of the facts to make a qualified judgement... I doubt.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 04/05/2020 21:20

As a previous poster said - a wet market is just a market selling fresh meat and fish. As opposed to a dry market selling groceries I suppose.

It’s wildlife markets in proximity to wet markets that are the problem.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 04/05/2020 21:23

@doublehalo

Gain of functions studies should be banned. Why's that? V odd comment.

user2085372673 · 04/05/2020 21:27

@merryhouse that made me lol.

Mimishimi · 04/05/2020 21:29

Developed in P4 lab in US. Lab in Wuhan given millions in US dollars to study strain. Deliberately released from there. Western governments try to shore up their failing, heavily indebted economies by suing China for trillions. Little of which none will see the light of day from those truly affected ... pretty much like reparations from other events in recent history.

tobee · 04/05/2020 21:35

I was definitely of the wet market persuasion, mostly because that sort of thing seems to have happened many times before.

Although this is interesting about the first case in France suggesting an early link with China but not Wuhan. Not sure what this tells us apart from there is more to know than we currently know:-

www.google.com/amp/s/news.sky.com/story/amp/coronavirus-present-in-france-a-month-earlier-than-thought-test-indicates-11982989

ludothedog · 04/05/2020 21:35

Various things can be true at one time:

  • The lab was negligent with their safety measures
  • they were studying Corona viruses
  • the lab received funding from US and other countries (because they recognised the risks of a novel corona virus
  • Chinese breeding methods and standards and use of wet markets/ wild animal markets have increased risks of cross species passing of viruses
  • Trump likes to divert blame and understands that a common enemy unites people

Occam's razor suggests the simplest answer is right - natural transmission from animal to human (as well as provisional scientific studies)

Pinkrose27 · 04/05/2020 21:36

Released and not accidentally.

Tiny2018 · 04/05/2020 21:40

Released intentionally.
