Do you think covid started in a wet market?

.....Or accidentally released from a laboratory?

Is it ever likely we will find out though?

HappyHammy · 04/05/2020 20:16

If it started in the market did an animal sneeze or cough on a person. How did it spread if its airborne.

DullPortraits · 04/05/2020 20:18

Do have bats on the wet market bbc showed footage at beginning of the pandemic.

sleepyhorse · 04/05/2020 20:18

I wonder if we’ll ever find out

PicsInRedI thought possibly a nutter too...an act of terror essentially.

What makes me wonder is the timeframes, the number of strains and the fact that Western governments are both suddenly angry at China and also squirrelly as all hell with background info. They don't seem to think it was govt sponsored, but there seems to be something...else. Like possibly a nut.

Someone up thread mentioned the movie Contagion. Perhaps 12 monkeys, but less deadly. 🤷‍♀️

iVampire · 04/05/2020 20:23

They say that from the sequencing it looks like a spontaneous mutation

They don’t know where it came from, if what/where it’s natural reservoir is (it could flare up from the same group of animals again),

Not clear whether the market was a place where it crossed species, or if that was the place for an early human cluster (reservoir somewhere completely different)

So I think natural, and hope we find out where.

YouSetTheTone · 04/05/2020 20:26

I’m in Camp Lab. It might be of animal origin but they were studying animal viruses at the lab. Never really understood why that exonerated the lab but hopefully someone cleverer than me can explain!

BelleHathor · 04/05/2020 20:28

Wuhan Lab deliberately designed and released. Likely that five eyes has intelligence saying as much but we will never know until declassified in years to come.

TheVanguardSix · 04/05/2020 20:28

Released.

Sarahandco · 04/05/2020 20:29

Have the wet markets been permanently closed down?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 04/05/2020 20:30

Released

BackInTime · 04/05/2020 20:30

Accidentally spread from lab, massively covered up by the Chinese who locked down internally, knowing the risks but allowed international travel to continue so as not to spook other countries.

Hunnybears · 04/05/2020 20:31

I think it was the wet market. I don’t think it was made in a lab.

In the same way you can catch salmonella from uncooked eggs. I believe not so much these days but 20+ years ago it was a big thing about making sure eggs weren’t runny etc

Same as that mad cow disease or BSE years ago.

Rats with the plague, bird flu, swine flu etc...

You just have to look at some of the videos circulating social media. I seen one where a toddler was give a live frog to eat 🤢🤮 absolutely vile

PicsInRed · 04/05/2020 20:33

If I'm honest, I've been paying close attention to the news and the rhetoric has been getting stronger and stronger over months - now with the 5 eyes story the other day and the story about the Chinese internal report re: expected armed conflict with the USA...I feel that we're being slowly informed and prepared for something.

Whatever that something is, I'm fairly sure I dont want it. I'm glad my son is young.

whatnametopick · 04/05/2020 20:34

Accidentally released via poor safety system in the lab, spread by worker in the market

Bathbedandbeyond · 04/05/2020 20:35

Lab! But not accidentally!

2beautifulbabs · 04/05/2020 20:38

Released

Toilenstripes · 04/05/2020 20:40

Definitely from a lab.

doublehalo · 04/05/2020 20:46

Lab. They've been working on it for years.

Gain of function experiments should be banned and anyone conducting them charged with...mass murder? genocide? Confused

YetiAnotherNameChange · 04/05/2020 20:46

I have no idea. But regardless, wet markets need to be heavily banned and a lot of countries- not just China- need to really crack down on their animal welfare and hygiene standards laws.

greentriangles · 04/05/2020 20:47

Released on purpose. I bet china's economy comes out better off after this.

Sarahandco · 04/05/2020 20:50

If they have not already shut them down, at least pending an enquiry, given the devastation that has been caused, then we have to assume they are not concerned about it happening again?

StormzyinaTCup · 04/05/2020 20:50

Lab
Wet market was a cover

HermioneWeasley · 04/05/2020 20:50

Wet market

Bat transmission to pangolins which are slaughtered in wet markets, animal to human transmission from the pangolin. All early cases were wet market workers.

kevintheorangecarrot · 04/05/2020 20:50

I personally think it has been engineered/man-made. They probably fiddled with animal and human viruses and combined them together.
