Starting to hate society

I really didn't before. I don't trust my neighbours. I can't share my true thoughts with friends. The social control aspect of this is getting to me. Being expected to clap. Being shamed into compliance. Stay home, save lives... as though it could be that simple. I think I'm going mad. I don't know how to come back from it. I can't sleep. I want to move to the wilderness and never be part of it again. Help.

What is the difference between the Scottish and English guidelines that you feel are too far?

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 11:36

Another thought

One of the “fake shielding’ friends is also the type who rings her husband when we’ve walked a mile to the pub, “so he knows we got here all right”. I suppose this is just a last straw. I might end up with no friends but I’m just so over people like that.

mamamo15 · 05/05/2020 11:56

@regina exactly.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/05/2020 12:03

I have this odd neighbour who keeps coming into our communal garden wearing a mask, skirting round me whilst announcing that he is shielding ... police were called to the garden previously and now we have a sign from the residents association saying it is OK to use it 'for two people well spaced or a single family group' Anyway just there on my own and he comes in, I am sure he is just doing it for attention as he could see I was there already from the window.

I don't know why he doesn't just wait till it is empty if he's so concerned rather than coming in when I'm there to go on about it. It's happened on more than one occasion now. I'm just trying to ignore but it's putting me off going in there now.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/05/2020 12:04

I'm not hogging it or anything btw, just in there for half an hour or so maybe once or twice a week. And then he shows up. I guess he might be lonely.

mamamo15 · 05/05/2020 12:06

I'm not a clapper either. Did the first one and it was very emotional. Too busy doing stuff to clap. I look after small kids every day and by night I sit back with my glass of wine and relax.
Fill your cup first and everyone will be fine.

twoHopes · 05/05/2020 12:14

I would love to feel a sense of community spirit and British solidarity through all this but I also feel like people are just being idiots. Friends fawning over pictures of the royals clapping the NHS (despite the fact the royals always go private). Fireworks in my street every Thursday when no NHS workers actually want people buggering about with fireworks. Everyone raising money for the NHS even though the government is throwing money at it right now and small charities everywhere are going under. Friends who are young and healthy having panic attacks about someone walking too close to them in the supermarket. Everyone talking about how country x, y and z are so stupid when we in the UK have one of the worst death rates in the world. I feel like I can't have a sensible conversation with anyone about this.

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 12:17

Orange he sounds like the worst kind of wanker

I have no outside space but actually a shared garden would be a nightmare right now.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/05/2020 12:18

Do you think it's a result of self indulgence such as seen for example with social media before this? Everything being 'all about me'.

It's also in the stuff about taking up hobbies etc as well. there was an awful article in our local city magazine at the start of this going on about now is the time to get creative not to sit about and watch TV. Or something along those lines. Telling us how to have our 'best life' in lockdown.

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 12:55

orange do I think what is a result of that kind of thing?

If you mean your neighbour,I think he’s just an attention seeking wanker.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/05/2020 12:58

Oh I was meaning about what twohopes was posting about as well really, but yes could apply to that man as well I suppose. Just in general about society before this all happened and the tendency to show off really.

DianneWhatcock · 05/05/2020 12:58

@LilacTree1

Are people seriously pretending to shield?/! Words fail me

Why would anyone do this?

Orangeblossom78 · 05/05/2020 13:00

Why would anyone do this?

To be special and different and be worthy of attention

Not talking about the people who really have been told to of course.

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 13:01

Dianne well I’ve got two friends who said they are shielding and don’t have a letter.

“Self shielding” is now the word they use.

It wouldn’t matter but one of them nearly got me to go on a 2 hour walk to help her with something before her conscience got the better of her and she told me the truth.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/05/2020 13:15

The thing is the actually shielding is quite a small group of very specific conditions whereas there is a lot of people who might be more vulnerable due to age and health who don't fit in it, which makes things a bit more complicated.

DianneWhatcock · 05/05/2020 13:18

LOLOLOL well I have heard it all now what utter fucking bellends

Jesus christ

DianneWhatcock · 05/05/2020 13:18

twoHopes · 05/05/2020 13:26

Haha quite. So much for Blitz spirit. Instead we've got "self shielders" getting their neighbours to run their bloody errands!

And yes I do think some of the narcissism is fuelled by social media. I had a friend stop me part way through a video call on Saturday so she could get a screenshot for her Instagram story. I mean FFS.

rookiemere · 05/05/2020 13:44

Yes I totally agree with this. I've been out more than once a day on occasion as I've started running again and find it most unsatisfactory with the dog. We live rurally so meet very few people, and it's really helping with my mental health which was taking a bit of a dip. But I try to vary my routes so the neighbours don't see me out more than once as I'm worried what they might say to people.

I clap on Thursday because I'm worried what people think if I don't. I hate being out with the ddog as we are used to our route being empty so he can be offlead, whereas now I leap and put the lead on and feel anxious when we're out.

It's going to take a while to get back to normal.

DianneWhatcock · 05/05/2020 13:50

Haha quite. So much for Blitz spirit. Instead we've got "self shielders" getting their neighbours to run their bloody errands!

Yep and these cunts are probably the ones all hogging the supermarket delivery slots as well

missyB1 · 05/05/2020 13:57

Oh I’m coming to the wilderness with you OP - promise to keep a safe social distance Grin
I had a woman freaking out yesterday when her dog and mine sniffed each other (quite happily tails wagging). She was insisting loudly and crossly that dogs can pass Covid to each other and then on to humans. I smiled and said I’d love to read that scientific paper as it must be very interesting.
I’ve had enough of drama llamas revelling in all of this.
Oh and Dh is a Dr and the clapping pisses him off as he reckons half the bloody clappers are probably the biggest hypocrites you could meet.

dancingbadger · 05/05/2020 14:09

@rookiemere I feel exactly the same re the dog walks. I used to really enjoy them now I just find then stressful. People's hysterical reactions when they see you approaching with a dog, leaping into bushes to keep their 2m distance and shooting you evils for, god forbid, walking your dog on the route which previously they never went near!

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 14:40

As this is the “don’t want to be part of society”thread I hope it’s all right to ask

Does anyone see hope of population reduction? Or will people just continue having children who will get paid less and less for fewer jobs?

Orangeblossom78 · 05/05/2020 14:41

Just been reading this online...seems the Gov / Sage actually aimed to frighten us with this message / threaten...kind of explains a bit how people reacted I guess...

Behavioural scientists for the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage)...Sir Patrick Vallance, the chief scientific adviser, succumbed this morning to mounting pressure to make Sage deliberations more transparent and published a set of the group’s documents, although some have been redacted.

Speaking to MPs, Sir Patrick emphasised that government decisions were “informed by science, not led by science” as he sought to make clear political responsibility.

The documents provide an insight into concerns that the government’s initial messaging was confusing, leading the public to underestimate the threat posed by Covid-19, fears which led to the honing of the “Stay at home” slogan.

On March 22, Sage warned that “a substantial number of people still do not feel sufficiently personally threatened; it could be that they are reassured by the low death rate in their demographic group”.

It added: “The perceived level of personal threat needs to be increased among those who are complacent, using hard-hitting emotional messaging. To be effective this must also empower people by making clear the actions they can take to reduce the threat.”

Orangeblossom78 · 05/05/2020 14:43

So I hope now they have threatened us and made everyone scared they are happy, as now no-one will feel confident to go back out to work etc.
