Starting to hate society

I really didn't before. I don't trust my neighbours. I can't share my true thoughts with friends. The social control aspect of this is getting to me. Being expected to clap. Being shamed into compliance. Stay home, save lives... as though it could be that simple. I think I'm going mad. I don't know how to come back from it. I can't sleep. I want to move to the wilderness and never be part of it again. Help.

I'm not sure what the actual law says but the guidance differs.

OP I’m in England but yes

I notice someone asked if this is fuelled by Facebook

I don’t use it so that’s certainly not an issue for me

I couldn’t sleep last night - ended up with a double dose of something - and I was thinking about your post, which really helped me.

People I thought were my friends 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have been missing my runs/walks because of the social distancing and the view of slow suicide upsetting me so much. Today is a demarcation line i think - it’s bloody rough round here but I’ll go after dark and take a can of hairspray! The lack of exercise isn’t helping, but what I see outside is so horrible, and I don’t mean the usual problems of a rough area.

LilacTree1 · 04/05/2020 11:38

Londoners supporting park closures?

yougov.co.uk/topics/health/articles-reports/2020/04/30/should-parks-remain-open-during-covid-19

I realise these stats are, um, questionable, but they will be used as a defence.

Mascotte · 04/05/2020 11:55

The law in Scotland just says you can leave your house for exercise: no further limits.

@LilacTree1 really sorry to hear your experience. I hope you are OK and the runs after help.

@Mascotte glad to know about the legal side

I agree, OP and it seems even places like BBC seem to be egging it on- for example this article today on lockdown breakers - 'undercover hairdressers' sounds like drug dealers and a drive to walk to see some stars like the worst thing on earth. I guess it is all designed to shame us into following the lockdown.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52501417

xtinak · 04/05/2020 14:31

I guess maybe shame, and making examples of people, is the most potent tool available given that there aren't enough police to carry out widescale enforcement.

The last example in that article to seems like very clear overreach by the police, and is a result of what I think are quite poorly thought out rules. But what do I know. I would like to think there is a better way than this.

OP posts:
selfisolatingsince2007 · 04/05/2020 14:36

OP, honestly you're not the only one. Its all getting a bit much. I don't clap, its stupid. I'm not British and honestly find there are far to many absolute idiots revelling in the lockdown mentality and taking it too far.

The other day I got made to feel bad by a friend for going to a routine antenatal appointment because I shouldn't be bothering the NHS. Fuck that. Life and health and babies don't get put on hold "because we shouldn't be a bother".

I swear to god too many people are actually getting off on all this. Does my nut in.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 04/05/2020 14:43

I think it's really important to tell people what you think. The petty tyrants need to be challenged. Why would anyone clap for the NHS when they don't want to, or make up excuses? Just tell them why it's bollocks! (Along with many other things.)

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 04/05/2020 14:47

I guess maybe shame, and making examples of people

One advantage of ageing - I find I am beyond shame and the manipulation which it engenders these days, and quite happy to be disapproved of by half-wits Grin

Onone · 04/05/2020 14:55

That’s my dream to move to the middle of nowhere,iv never been a people person

Orangeblossom78 · 04/05/2020 17:05

There's a book called the Life Changing Magic of not Giving a Fuck which might be quite useful for some of this. (about what people think I mean)

Maybe it will change, they will fatigue of it, and also as restrictions change they'd look mad if they continue with the same shaming etc.

selfisolatingsince2007 · 04/05/2020 17:11

@Orangeblossom78 I would totally watch that undercover hairdressers thing to find someone to do my hair. I would happily cop the shame to have something that looks like hair instead of looking like a scarecrow.

LilacTree1 · 04/05/2020 21:50

I think the media are working hard at shaming people

A lot of the pics of “packed” London parks - they are all two metre apart, so fuck off. It’s what a busy London park looks like when the local area is mostly flats and no gardens, and there’s good weather.

I was trying to think today if the mixed messages we get are partly media or if government left things to interpretation

e.g. gatherings of two permitted

But stay at home except for x reason.

BeetrootRocks · 05/05/2020 00:58

Friend in Brighton at start of lockdown said they took a pic of the beach at an angle that made it look like there were lots of people close together when IRL they weren't at all.

The UK news since this started has felt like propaganda to me. It's so odd.

I'm watching BBC but also Al Jazeera to get some decent world news. Other stuff is still happening in the world Fgs.

Al Jazeera is excellent so anyone sick of all news in UK being only about covid and UK, give it a try if you can get it.

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 01:40

Beetroot “ The UK news since this started has felt like propaganda to me.”

That’s because it is.

Reuters isn’t too bad.

cologne4711 · 05/05/2020 07:34

I think the media are working hard at shaming people

Yes and there have been complaints made about using telephoto lenses on cameras to make people look closer together than they are. And there have been videos allegedly shot this year but very clearly taken on a normal day last year (or some other time). I'm not sure what the media's agenda is.

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 10:38

I think it hasn’t helped that some jokers have put fake photos of up from really busy days and claimed “it’s a joke” but it’s not funny when people and media ha e take it as truth.

They never crack down on this kind of fake news.

Locals live in fear of the local park being shut down, although it’s a pretty grim place to be right now with all the police.

I’ve read on MN the police are really busy now - what with? Stopping people sitting on grass?!

Orangeblossom78 · 05/05/2020 10:49

Now the BBC are reporting about mental health getting worse and people are scared to go out for a walk.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-52295894

Orangeblossom78 · 05/05/2020 10:52

The police are apparently fed up with the whole thing and saying don't ask them to police it in the next stage as they need to get back to crime.

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/coronavirus-dont-ask-us-to-enforce-looser-social-distancing-say-police-5lb02qd6l

DianneWhatcock · 05/05/2020 10:53

@xtinak

Totally get you ...Come and have a look at the dementors threads

A lot of us are feeling like this and just sick of the hysteria and curtain twitching behaviour of people

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 11:06

Orange I’ve gone from 5 miles a day - my usual in normal times - to zero

Mostly because I can’t bear the social distancing dance and my only route to the park means I see people queuing up, which just makes me even more low.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/05/2020 11:19

Yes I used to get the 10K on the fitbit just going to the school and back and around town etc, most days and now have taken it off as it was getting too depressing. It can help going quiet places but as everyone is going out to those places they can get busier. and the 2m thing isn't easy - especially when some shout and get weird

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 11:21

I ditched the Fitbit

No point helping the trackers.

LilacTree1 · 05/05/2020 11:25

Oh and mum has had neighbours tell her she shouldnt even go out to post a letter.

I’ve got friends pretending to shield...

It’s a massive mess but I can’t be bothered with society any more.
