A vaccine is very likely to happen

I've worked in big Pharma for years. I am 99% sure an effective vaccine will be produced this year. It's gonna happen, have faith in scientists. They will be working their butt off....

"Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla told The Wall Street Journal the company's COVID-19 vaccine could be ready for emergency distribution by the fall. The company could further be ready for a broader rollout by the end of the year, he added"

I agree op. It is the most likely outcome based on what all the experts are saying. I know the unknown is scary but too many people on here are talking about it as if it's impossible.

Sunshinegirl82 · 29/04/2020 14:05

There seems to be lots of positive stories about the progress of a vaccine at the moment which is brilliant. I’ve always been pretty sure they would come up with a vaccine eventually, I’m now hopeful of something up and running much sooner than we would have dared hope for at the start of this. I’m keeping everything crossed.

Bigfishylittlefishy · 29/04/2020 14:11

Always been hopeful despite the doom and gloom and gloomers. I think they will do it. I have faith.

FreierFall · 29/04/2020 14:12

I think things are looking pretty good, vaccine wise. I've had some pretty down days, but the Pfizer statement is encouraging. Fingers crossed andWine

I am worried that the rush to make a vaccine could mean that we all have it and then in a few years / months there are terrible side effects and we all die 😩 can you please reassure me lol!

Kirschcherry · 29/04/2020 14:30

It is what is helping to keep me calm. I have faith in our scientists and medics. I am keeping everything crossed for a vaccine by autumn, my parents are shielding and it would be amazing to think they will only have to live like this for a few more months.

Kirschcherry · 29/04/2020 14:31

Ps. Thank you for your post op, it is nice to see some positivity

justanotherneighinparadise · 29/04/2020 14:32

My DP seems to feel quite negative about this because he said with vaccines a lot of it is luck. I think it’s such a global problem and so much ch money and resources are being ploughed into it that they’ve got to find something that will help.

Alex50 · 29/04/2020 14:37

I think I will let a few million people take it first and then decide if it is safe 😊

MrsNettle · 29/04/2020 14:47

If it is rolled out in poorer countries first, I'll know that it's dodgy.

FreierFall · 29/04/2020 14:48

I believe around 100 companies are currently working on a vaccine, from big pharma to biotechs. They are also sharing info between themselves which under normal circumstances would just not happen. I know a lot of people are suspicious of the pharmaceutical industry but they are our best (and only real) hope.

Of course there will be a vaccine. How advanced we are now in terms of science and technology. The science community for the whole world are on this. I have every faith.

Drivingdownthe101 · 29/04/2020 14:51

We’ll have months of people saying ‘I’m staying at home until there’s a vaccine’, then when there’s a vaccine they’ll say ‘I’m not having it, it’s not safe’. There will be no winning Grin

GreenTulips · 29/04/2020 14:54

I’d take the vaccine

I think we have so many brilliant scientist all over the world capable of making a vaccine.

Whilst side effects happen we know how dangerous this virus can be to either ourselves or elderly relatives

Didkdt · 29/04/2020 14:56

I'm desperate for a vaccine

Realitea · 29/04/2020 14:59

Bring on the vaccine!

AgeLikeWine · 29/04/2020 15:00

Hi OP, would you expect Big Pharma work together & pool their resources/ manufacturing capacity to ensure that the vaccine, when it’s ready, can be distributed across the world as fast as possible?

ErrolTheDragon · 29/04/2020 15:02

There's unprecedented effort and resources going into this worldwide. Companies are starting to manufacture ahead of all the trials so that if it works and is safe, it can start to be rolled out ASAP - knowing full well that if the trials fail then it will be money and effort down the drain.

Justajot · 29/04/2020 15:02

What is the risk that a vaccine is developed and we are then held to ransom for access to it? I am particularly concerned that it might be developed in the US with Trump's insanity reigning.

Sunshinegirl82 · 29/04/2020 15:05

I saw an interview with the Oxford vaccine team and they are already partnering with companies in various parts of the world to maximise production as early as possible and they have said that there will be no exclusive licensing so it will be much more available. They are also not looking to profit from it. I’m really hopeful that the will is there to get this distributed across the world (if it’s effective).

ErrolTheDragon · 29/04/2020 15:06

I am particularly concerned that it might be developed in the US with Trump's insanity reigning.

Hopefully he'll be out of office in November.

tobee · 29/04/2020 15:10

I'm looking forward to a vaccine and hopefully soon some already approved drugs being repurposed treating people successfully. And that the adapted CPAP machines have further success rates and rolled out more frequently.

I love science and scientists! (Not in anyway scientific myself sadly)

FreierFall · 29/04/2020 15:10

Forget Trump...he doesn't own Pfizer.

OP posts:
MorrisZapp · 29/04/2020 15:16

Yip, huge and unprecedented cooperation on this. I have absolute faith we will have a safe and effective vaccine in the short to medium term future.

But yes to exactly the same people saying 'I'm not going out until there's a vaccine' and 'I don't trust vaccines, everyone else can have it but I won't'.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 29/04/2020 15:18

I am shielding and obviously this would be life changing....

But I thought we'd never managed a coronavirus vaccine (common colds?) or something ? I thought it was supposed to take 18months ....
