I don't understand this theory AT ALL. How can people seriously believe this?

People are dying and yet, there are people who don't believe this and think hospitals are empty.

Not sure the point of this post. I guess to hear that other people think this theory is crazy!?

slipper - how come you have so many friends with these beliefs? I have 1 friends (man in his 50s) who thinks we should come out of lockdown, but even he doesn't deny it's going on. He's very much into alternative health and quite sceptical of conventional wisdom sometimes so it fits with his personality. One other acquaintance a bit older, maybe in his 60s and male, posted that it was just flu, that was weeks ago though and I haven't heard anything from him for ages so the penny has probably dropped.

I'm curious what the profile is of people who either believe it's only flu or who believe conspiracy theories. As I said, my experience has been of middle aged / early old aged men. Is that the type?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/04/2020 10:12

I loathe conspiracy theories, always have. Before the internet they were the province of the weird relative/neighbour/colleague/pub regular that nobody bothered to listen to, or those who wrote letters to the press in green ink, or paraded up and down Oxford Street with a home-made placard. Social media has helped them find each other and now they've all got an audience of other credulous ignoramuses there's no stopping them.

Hard to know what to do about them. Clearly they all crave attention and any attention is better than none, so they love it when people take them on. But on the other hand what they say can be harmful, so can't always be ignored.

And now we've got one as POTUS! Bloody hell.

@Cam77

David Icke isn't banned from the mainstream media because he's exposing the truth, yada yada. Its because he thinks a Jewish conspiracy is running the world.

kateandme · 26/04/2020 10:12

trouble is the hospitals arent on there knees partly because everything ese is on hold!so no operations for your cancer.people arent and are too scared to come in for serious shit like heart attacks and other life threatening things.or coming in too late.people are askiojg if they should go in for broken bones on here ffks.
all dentistry all other smaller things that are quite vital andkeep the smaller wards fuller are not going on.gnereal surgerys and other things that arent covid have been stopped.so of course it might seem emptier.but we need to get those things going again.and with everyone redirecting(or mostly) to looking after covid then what the fuk will happen if we try getting back to normal care for people we did before.the hospital will soon be at a strain.
hosptials are coping because every bugger else whos ill cant behelped

Orangeblossom78 · 26/04/2020 10:14

On personal stories - there are some but the news seems focused on deaths. Local hospital has a few on there if you want to see a few.

The people who think it's a hoax obviously haven't had a beloved family member die. A previously healthy family member.

LilacTree1 · 26/04/2020 10:15

I only know about Protein Man because there’s something in the Museum of London. But I asked mum and she remembers it!

Asuitablecat · 26/04/2020 10:15

Tends to be mainly men, who think they're different to the sheeple. Tend to have smoked a lot of weed over past 20 years. Think critical thinking means just not believing msm.

ploopsie · 26/04/2020 10:17

What does the government have to benefit from if this is a hoax? it makes no sense? Same with the "it's to kill all the old people", why would we bother with a lockdown then?

thesesocksaretootight · 26/04/2020 10:20

They never seem to be able to answer the question: Why?

Candodad · 26/04/2020 10:24

@Yester
Is it not? All the analysis of English texts and Mastery of Maths I’ve taught over the years must just be imaginary then.

Zaphodsotherhead · 26/04/2020 10:26

thesesocksaretootight or they answer 'why?' with a load of waffle including words like 'government plots' 'trying to keep people compliant' 'sheeple' etc etc. Buzz words that don't really mean anything when you track them back.

IME it's uneducated people who want to think that they are more intelligent than they actually are.

The80sweregreat · 26/04/2020 10:28

Conspiracy theories will abound for years about this pandemic. Another one to add to the many about everything else.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 26/04/2020 10:28

But there actually IS an asteroid due to pass VERY close to Earth on Wednesday! Google it!

MaeDanvers · 26/04/2020 10:42

The nature of being alive is uncertainty - which sucks because we all hate uncertainty! Conspiracy theories are a way to try and get some sort of inner control over the fear of not knowing what is going to happen - it makes you 'privy' to 'special' knowledge that most people don't have. That's why the lure of things that provide explanations is so strong - even conspiracy theories.

If you believe wholeheartedly in the idea that says some secret cabal is controlling everything everyone does, then you can also believe that a handful of people know the 'truth' and that at some point it can be changed and we'll all know what's going on - and be able to control things better.

MajesticWhine · 26/04/2020 10:49

Corbyn's brother says it's because says social distancing and keeping six feet apart will allow you to be personally identified by GPS or 5G satellite and that's why the government want it.
Makes total sense. I'm sure the government are fascinated by my every move Hmm

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/04/2020 10:49

"IME it's uneducated people who want to think that they are more intelligent than they actually are" sounds like the whole anti-vaxxer movement...

I don't think CV is a hoax (I wish it was!!!!), but I'll tell you why it took me a long time to take it seriously, and I still barely do; I'm obeying the lockdown exceedingly grudgingly, especially as the government is playing mind games.

Because the press have a history of always telling us that we're going to die from something or other, or there will be total Armageddon because somebody sneezed. We had it with the Millennium Bug, that you would die from using your mobile phone, foot and mouth, mad cow disease, cancer from your pen top, immigration, terrorists/paedophiles/extremists round every corner, to name but a few.

So when there was all the talk of the "deadly virus", all the crying wolf that the press had done over the years made me, and no doubt many others think "yet more press hysteria".

I now live by the principle that in general, news is bad for you, and that what's often more telling is what you're not told; right now, I think the government's silence on many things speaks volumes. I remember an article which listed many reasons for the news being bad for you, one of them being "it appears impartial, but there's an agenda behind it". I especially believe this of anything the government says, that what they say is to distract us from what they don't want us to think about. They're throwing death figures at us all the time because they don't want us to be plotting ways to break the lockdown.

LilacTree1 · 26/04/2020 11:09

wanderings exactly.

something like 99% of us won't die from the virus.

BirdieFriendReturns · 26/04/2020 11:22

It’s a convenient way to usher in a cashless society. They like us to be scared and compliant.

LilacTree1 · 26/04/2020 11:23

Birdie - yes, I've started using cash since I realised that.

SpnBaby1967 · 26/04/2020 11:56

Why would the government want to lockdown an entire nation & wreck an economy to get rid of cash?

I just dont understand the whole idea that it is just the government rubbing their hands in utter glee at being able to control us all. I mean why? To what end? The protesters in America saying about wanting their freedom back, in what way are they not free? They're not exactly living in N.Korea are they were the citizens are even told what haircuts to have. And all those screaming that the government arent helping provide for them, are probably all the same ones who argue against a decent social security system and national health service as they dont want their money used to help others. Yet here they are, needing that kind of help too.

I dont know. Initially I didn't think this virus was as bad as it seems now because the figures coming out of china, which is a huge populus seemed to small.

Gwenhwyfar · 26/04/2020 12:06

"The people who think it's a hoax obviously haven't had a beloved family member die. A previously healthy family member."

No, but most people haven't had a family member die of it but still don't believe it's a hoax.
It could be that they still don't know anyone or know of anyone who's had it except famous people, but I'd find that hard to believe by now.

Gwenhwyfar · 26/04/2020 12:09

I can understand this in the early days when it was mainly a problem in East Asia. After al, there were fears around SARS, Ebola and Swine Flu that never actually reached this level.
However, you would surely understand the seriousness once you saw what was happening in Italy. How could you be in denial after that?
