I have decided not to have the vaccine for coronavirus when it is rolled out. I don’t trust the government and will not be used as a pilot. It seems this will be a rushed vaccine (tested-yes) but we will not know the long term side effects until years down the line. I will politely decline the vaccine until I feel fully informed. Anyone else declining it?

OP posts:
DressingGownofDoom · 18/04/2020 02:48

'Why is this vaccine being rushed? How long do normal vaccines take to develop?'

The prudent question would be why do vaccines take so long to develop? Some take years. Why? Because of a lack of funding usually. Every resource we have is being thrown at this one. It will be tested and it will be safe.

Wannabangbang · 18/04/2020 04:26

So many people here saying they won't have it. Have you not thought to realise you are indeed selfish. Do any of you not remember or heard of smallpox?? If a vaccine wasn't created, none of us would exist.

Tinfoil bloody hats the lot of you, think you'll be regretting this decision when the economy is completely ruined and you are hiding at home dying of covid that you've helped to spread by not getting vaccinated in the future. Anyone who doesn't have a legitimate reason to be vaccinated for things is selfish and will contribute indirectly to many more deaths in the future.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 18/04/2020 04:29

Good luck to you, the mere sheeple will do an extra big clap for you when you end up with coronavirus.

Derbygerbil · 18/04/2020 05:08

....but I have all my other immunisations.

Why is this different. Also, why are you rushing to pronounce on this now.... A vaccine is a long way off!

Derbygerbil · 18/04/2020 05:11

The vaccine isn’t mandatory though. Freedom and choice I believe in.

Freedom to infect and kill the vulnerable
Choice to help ensure a Coronavirus persists for year to come

I love what you believe in Hmm

Rebelwithallthecause · 18/04/2020 05:14

I’m still sceptical that we’ll find one

Swine flu vaccine was found quickly

SARS1 vaccine wasn’t found - some people say that’s because it wasn’t needed in the end but if doesn’t stop the research and development.

There is also a lot of claims against bad side effects that came with the swine flu vaccine

It’s a scary position to be in if we have a vaccine or not

Rebelwithallthecause · 18/04/2020 05:17

The professor at oxford who is heading up the research and development in the uk for the vaccine has told government she needs £100m to fund it by June if she was to deliver a working vaccine

She’s had a measly £500k so far

PhilCornwall1 · 18/04/2020 05:27

If it's a live vaccine, I won't be able to have it.

You can guarantee when a vaccine is developed, this country will be at the back of the queue for getting it.

sashh · 18/04/2020 05:29

I’d rather build my immune system up in preparation

Well you can't, it doesn't work like that.

It completely eradicated the disease, and all in a matter of a few months, definitely less than six. This will be the same, I’m sure. The stakes are very high so a vaccine will be found quickly.

Like the one for HIV?

leafygarden · 18/04/2020 05:56

Grin Grin

Here in the UK we have our very own special kind of stupid.

'I know they will have tested a vaccine etc - but I'm not going to have it'

Great - well enjoy your Covid 19 - and no doubt enjoy spreading it around too. Lovely.

And no logical arguments as to why you plan to do this.

Blueberry2020 · 18/04/2020 06:08

I think it’s too early to say anything about the vaccine. If it suddenly appeared later today I would be very concerned about having it as there would have been no time for proper research or testing.

However it isn’t going to appear today. It will likely be 18-24 months, by which point I imagination other people will have had it in the world. Then the vulnerable here will opt to have it and then eventually, I guess, in about 3-5 years’ time, I might be offered it. At this stage it isn’t the great unknown it is now.

So if I was looking at it as someone pops up and offers it to me today, I would be worried. But that’s not the way it’s going to work.

Pixxie7 · 18/04/2020 06:19

Clinical trials involving 500 people are due to start next week according to the news.

PhilCornwall1 · 18/04/2020 06:20

Well, coronavirus became the new Brexit in here. You can guarantee the vaccine will be the new Brexit/coronavirus threads when the country opens up again.

Minty2020 · 18/04/2020 06:47

I rather have the vaccine than live in fear of this awful virus all my life . I have heard it’s not a nice, peaceful death ! The viral load seems to be the problem as it’s killed young fit people too.

Moondust001 · 18/04/2020 06:56

This has got to be a wind up. But if the OP is genuine and intends to sit in isolation until they decide what to do, I hope they have deep pockets - because I see no reason why they should expect an employer or taxpayers to fund their self-imposed drama.

If people consider that it is better to risk the health of everyone by refusing any vaccine, then that is their choice. But it may be the choice of others to refuse to allow them to mix. There have already been scientific advisors discussions about phone apps and the like indicating a persons status , and using that to allow or disallow access to venues. I think that's perfectly fair.

bulliedintonamechange · 18/04/2020 06:57

Good luck with that. At least you've told everyone so everyone knows just how different you are. Must feel good

Moondust001 · 18/04/2020 07:10

It will likely be 18-24 months

Conservative estimates are actually 12 months, and some developers are saying they may be ready in 6 months now. Covid-19 is a coronavirus. We already know a lot about them and have a "head start" based on research into vaccines for other coronaviruses. The main reason that no vaccines have been developed yet for other coronaviruses is that there has not been a lot of investment in it. Cases of things like SARS and MERS are limited, and therefore there is little money to be made by pharmaceutical companies in marketing something with a limited a profitability. There is a vast market for a Covid-19 virus, and that provides an incentive.

Letsnotusemyname · 18/04/2020 07:15

It’s your choice but...

A. Don’t let others get too attached to you.

B. There may be some who (medically) can’t have it. Your choice to not have it, especially if there are a significant number of fellow anti-vaccers, will put their health at risk.

MozFan · 18/04/2020 07:28

What if you’re pretty sure you’ve already had it? Because I’m almost 100% sure I did 4 weeks ago.

MozFan · 18/04/2020 07:30

I personally think it’ll be like the flu vaccine, only given to those who are already vulnerable or who are over 60.
Because in the vast majority of cases it isn’t a problem for younger people or those without underlying issues.

BillywilliamV · 18/04/2020 07:40

They can test the thing on me if they like...

CrunchyCarrot · 18/04/2020 08:08

She’s had a measly £500k so far

Hmmm perhaps she needs the help of Captain Tom Moore!

frumpety · 18/04/2020 08:14

Another here who didn't reach the required levels of immunity with the Hep B vaccination initially. Have had every yearly vaccine required as a NHS worker and had no unpleasant side effects to any of them, other than the usual sore arm !

OP, if you do not want to have a vaccine then don't, it really is that simple for you. If and when it is rolled out to the general population, you can review your decision based on the available information at that point and discuss any concerns you might have with a HCP if you are offered one.

I think just as important as a vaccine, is work to find a clinically accurate and valid serology test and if having had covid-19 means you are then immune to the virus.

ThePrettyOneX · 18/04/2020 08:21

I wont have the vaccine either! Normally it takes 10 years on average to produce a vaccine , to go through all testing etc etc. 12 or 18 months is way too rushed and this vaccine will NOT be safe. It will cause more harm to people in long term. NO from me.

IrenetheQuaint · 18/04/2020 08:27

I'm surprised by the nastiness on here given that the OP clearly isn't an anti-vaxxer and given that the hastily developed swine flu seems to have given narcolepsy, a life-destroying disease, to a small but not insignificant of its recipients. When a vaccine is developed swiftly it is by definition impossible to judge its long-term effects.

For high risk people it probably would make sense to have the Covid 19 vaccine as soon as it's available, but it's a trickier decision for low risk people and kids.
