To think the amount of people we know who have died or are dying from CV is proportionately high?

Between DP and I, we know 3 people who have died and one who is very likely to due in the next 24 hours from/with Covid-19. We live in Yorkshire.

My old hairdresser who was 38 Sad DP's workmates husband who was a 60 year old GP (she is a nurse) and my workmates Mum who was in her 80's and lived in a care home but was very well on mothers day. My sisters FIL has early onset alzheimer's and is 58, currently in hospital but they had to complete a DNR for him this morning and they are refusing to admit him to critical care or for ventilation.

DP thinks this is probably an average amount that most people will see in this pandemic (he is frontline NHS so quite fatalistic) whereas I didn't think we would know this many people who would die, in what is essentially a month long period.

AIBU to think this is quite high or are you all seeing similar? It is very much adding to my long list of worries.

I don’t know anyone who’s had it, never mind died from it

PumpkinP · 16/04/2020 17:29

I don't know anyone who has died of has it

UncomfortableSilence · 16/04/2020 17:32

I live in an outer London borough and I don't personally know anyone who has died from or who indeed has had it.

ChesterDraw · 16/04/2020 17:34

I know 1 person whose grandparent has died from it. Nobody I know is ill with it, but my mum suspects she had it in January as she had a horrendous cough, fever etc all the symptoms, she had that for around 3-4 weeks on and off and is still quite weak from it even now.

Plump82 · 16/04/2020 17:34

I dont know anyone who has had it or died of it. I'm currently still working. In a large building with 100s of people. I'm surprised I haven't heard of at least one person being confirmed within the building.

SimonJT · 16/04/2020 17:35

I live in Zone 1, I don’t know any who had been diagnosed nor do I know anyone who has passed away from it.

vanillandhoney · 16/04/2020 17:37

I live in a small town of about 7,000 inhabitants and quite a few people here have died from it. Not hundreds, but enough for it to be noticeable and talked about. I don't know anyone personally, though.

I'm in Cumbria.

MissMuddyPuddles · 16/04/2020 17:37

I know a few people who have had it, but thankfully dont know anyone who has died from it yet.

onanothertrain · 16/04/2020 17:38

I don't know of anyone who has died from it or who has definitely had it.

hartof · 16/04/2020 17:38

I know of one person with it on a ventilator, we're in the north west.

FrancesHaHa · 16/04/2020 17:39

I'm seeing similar OP. Lots of people I know have had it (some tested, some really likely with all symptoms). I know of a few people who have died, although no one close to me.

Maybe at this stage it depends where you live still? We're in London and it feels very present. I also have friends working in the London hospitals, so hearing their stories probably makes this also feel close.

I'm also interested in how it makes people respond ie are people who aren't seeing this first hand yet more or less likely to take precautions, to have higher or lower levels of fear etc, or is this very individual.

Aryaneedle · 16/04/2020 17:39

I did think it seemed a really high number. It has really got to me, as basically none of their friends and family could be with them apart from my sisters FIL, they have said he can have one person with him at end of life and that person has to self isolate for 14 days after he has died.

It seems disproportionate.

At the moment, I don't know a single person who has it or suspects that they have it.

Boulshired · 16/04/2020 17:39

Where I live I do not know anyone who has even showed symptoms, but within DPs family in London two family members confirmed with the virus and two suspected but luckily no deaths.

Notmyrealname855 · 16/04/2020 17:39

Cumbria also - 4 who have died, about 15 who’ve had it (most are taking weeks to recover and still aren’t well)

CastleCrasher · 16/04/2020 17:40

I don't know anyone who's died of it, although I've seen several people who I know saying on social media that they have had relatives ill/die from it. Pretty much all my staff came down with symptoms very early on, but they weren't tested so we can't say for sure.

hyacinthbouquetsbucket · 16/04/2020 17:41

I know of one person, a pensioner.

MatildaTheCat · 16/04/2020 17:41

I know/ know of several people who have or had it. Husband of an acquaintance has died, friend of brother vented and on dialysis. Many others withbthe symptoms but no tests done.

My Dad is in a care home and has suddenly deteriorated and had a temperature yesterday. They have the virus in his home so although he hasn’t been tested I guess he probably has it.

I agree that most of us will know someone and some of us many people.

okiedokieme · 16/04/2020 17:42

I know a few but I work for the c of e and most of our congregations are elderly. All were over 80 and had serious health problems in addition to their age as risk factors. Memorial services are delayed until it's safe so will be very busy then

raspberrymolakoff · 16/04/2020 17:42

My daughter is a nurse in london. She has had it. She thought she would die and so did I. She messaged me "I'm in hell". She is pregnant with her second child. My son in law and his parents have had it too and his mother is struggling still after 3 weeks. Most tragically, two senior nurses at my daughter's hospital, who she sees every day, are on ventilators and at least one is not expected to survive. They're in their 40s and each have 3 children including a 14 year old. I find the complacency on Mumsnet bewildering . A lot of medical staff in central London are being housed in hotels so they don't take the virus home to flat shares or families. One of the nurses now on a ventilator had volunteered for an extra shift on ICU a few days before she became ill. Clap your hearts out tonight, the suffering is real.

Boulshired · 16/04/2020 17:42

I do feel that parts of the uk isolated too late and other parts too soon.

Lindy2 · 16/04/2020 17:43

I'm just outside London and I don't directly know anyone who has had it.

I know of 2 friends of friends who have probably had it but haven't been tested as they were able to stay at home and recover. DH also knows someone at his workplace (big workplace) who definitely had it and was in hospital 3 days. All are ok now.

Aryaneedle · 16/04/2020 17:43

I am interested in that too Frances - it seems very real to me, the threat. I am quite strict about the PPE I use for work etc.

As DP works at a hospital and I work in social care it might be that we know and are exposed to more people who are exposed to it IYSWIM hence why we seem to know people?

That's appalling. Alzheimer's presumably isn't one of the underlying conditions that makes him higher risk.
