To think the amount of people we know who have died or are dying from CV is proportionately high?

Between DP and I, we know 3 people who have died and one who is very likely to due in the next 24 hours from/with Covid-19. We live in Yorkshire.

My old hairdresser who was 38 Sad DP's workmates husband who was a 60 year old GP (she is a nurse) and my workmates Mum who was in her 80's and lived in a care home but was very well on mothers day. My sisters FIL has early onset alzheimer's and is 58, currently in hospital but they had to complete a DNR for him this morning and they are refusing to admit him to critical care or for ventilation.

DP thinks this is probably an average amount that most people will see in this pandemic (he is frontline NHS so quite fatalistic) whereas I didn't think we would know this many people who would die, in what is essentially a month long period.

AIBU to think this is quite high or are you all seeing similar? It is very much adding to my long list of worries.

Oh and I’m in the midlands but have lived in Central London, Spain, France and Italy and my IL’s are in Spain so I know people from a large number of areas.

ChateauMargaux · 16/04/2020 18:16

So sorry to hear of all these close connections who have died. I was saying to a friend that I had been to three funerals recently, all pre Covid. I hope there will not be too many more this year.

We know 2 people. Both with underlying conditions but only in their 40s and 50s.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 16/04/2020 18:17

I only know 2 people who have had it, quite poorly but didn't need hospital. NW city.

It has hit groups to different extents so far. It still has a long way to go.

We have both had it and I can't see how on earth daughter hasn't (but she has not had any symptoms) but let's score that as two. We know another couple who have had it. That's all. No deaths of anyone we know. A couple of health workers who are local were talking about local clusters. It's clearly out there but all I see are scared people avoiding me when out or spacing themselves out generously at stores.

bridgetreilly · 16/04/2020 18:17

I know a lot who have had it (and recovered) undiagnosed, one who tested positive and is in hospital, and another who has been in intensive care for nearly 2 weeks now with it.

I think it will depend a lot on how wide your social circle is, and there's also a lot of regional and ethnic disparity. But I would be very surprised if most people don't know someone by now.

RoobyMyrtle · 16/04/2020 18:18

I know 9 people who've had it, 1 who had died. I'm in Yorkshire. Most were very mild.

thecatneuterer · 16/04/2020 18:18

I'm in London. I know nine people (including myself) who have had it. Seven had it mildly and two have died. The two who died were both elderly and caught it in hospital where they had been admitted for end stage heart failure. Three of those who had it mildly caught it while caring for one of those who died after he was discharged from hospital. Only the two who died were tested.

underneaththeash · 16/04/2020 18:20

I know quite a few people who have had it - one of the families at DD's school brought it back from Italy over half term and many of the families in her class were affected. All were fine, although a couple of the mums had bad flu symptoms. (Not all confirmed, but the initial people were)
My lovely friend's mum died in a home within a few hours of starting a cough/temperature.
DS's best friend and his father - father was quite poorly but at home. Friend okay, Mum and sister felt a bit tired.
Our next door neighbour - again a skiing trip - she was a bit under the weather, but not too bad.

The only person hospitalised who was youngish with no underlying conditions was a really fit mum from DC2's school. She's now okay luckily.

Stats still do say that for my age group and ethnicity with no underlying health conditions, I am still very, very unlikely to be even hospitalised with it.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/04/2020 18:20

I know a few people who've had it, a few who may have had it or it could have been another cough. Only two definitely had it, one was tested because of her position and the other was serious in hospital.
None of my direct acquaintances have died of it, because who know the people I know have so it seems quite present here.

IHaveAMagicBean · 16/04/2020 18:21

We know one person who has died, my DH’s auntie June.

Some people like you op will be unfortunate, some people will scrape by with barely any loss. Or, you know, they’ll have lost their hairdressers sisters dog walker’s vicars grandma.

Nit sure what you’re asking.

DinosApple · 16/04/2020 18:21

Two parents of friends have died from it. That was within the first 300 or so. Neither lived near here though.

Several distant family members have had it, again geographically far. And another family member was stuck on a cruise ship with people sick from Corona on board.

I expect the true number who've had the virus is much higher as I know lots of people who've been ill with symptoms locally, but none have been hospitalised.

Ohffs66 · 16/04/2020 18:22

South Wales, I know 4 people that have had it (2 tested as NHS plus 1 of their partners), plus my friends dad who was really ill with all the symptoms. No-one that has died at the moment thank goodness although I have seen a couple of FB posts from acquaintances that have said they have had a friend or family member die.

Lampan · 16/04/2020 18:23

Forgive me if this sounds silly but it will also depend to some extent on the number of people you know or are acquainted with. The more people you know through work/social life etc the more likely you are to hear of people who have it.
Area and line of work will make a difference too.

Applejaxx · 16/04/2020 18:25

I don’t know anyone who’s had it. We have over cases in our area, so clearly it’s here but I’ve not heard that anyone I know or know of personally has had it.

Rose789 · 16/04/2020 18:25

2 people from my work
A friends grandfather
and my uncles father have all died.
Dh knows 2 other people well, that have died and 2 further acquaintances

A friend is in hospital on a ventilator along with her sister.
My uncle was in hospital in a ventilator but is now home and recovering well.

TuscanGreen · 16/04/2020 18:25

Someone my husband works with has just died from COVID 19. He was middle aged with no underlying conditions.

My daughter is a nurse in london. She has had it. She thought she would die and so did I. She messaged me "I'm in hell". She is pregnant with her second child. My son in law and his parents have had it too and his mother is struggling still after 3 weeks. Most tragically, two senior nurses at my daughter's hospital, who she sees every day, are on ventilators and at least one is not expected to survive. They're in their 40s and each have 3 children including a 14 year old. I find the complacency on Mumsnet bewildering . A lot of medical staff in central London are being housed in hotels so they don't take the virus home to flat shares or families. One of the nurses now on a ventilator had volunteered for an extra shift on ICU a few days before she became ill. Clap your hearts out tonight, the suffering is real."

Sending thoughts to you all. London has suffered particularly bad.

We are in the South West and much lower rate here in hospital although we have 2 care homes locally with it - 1 resident died, others ill and one has gone to hospital and not sure how they are. On a positive note there are a couple of friends of a friend that have been in hospital ICU and have been discharged.

WhyCantIThinkOfAGoodOne · 16/04/2020 18:25

I know a few people once removed (i.e. friend of a friend) who have died but no one personally. All of them though were young (younger than 60 and with children not yet grown up) and healthy (not sure about underlying conditions but certainly healthy enough to be in full time work and do sport etc).

StCharlotte · 16/04/2020 18:26

Just south of London. I know one person who thinks they have it and a few third hand cases.

I work in probate and we've got a lot of new cases coming through. Two so far have died of Covid-19. Both elderly. One with an underlying condition, one not

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 16/04/2020 18:26

Sorry know a third, was in hospital very ill. All were in their 30/early 40s.

1FootInTheRave · 16/04/2020 18:27

Thank you for the flowers.

Imo we haven't been hit hard in maternity as of yet. My heart hurts for my colleagues on the general side who are seeing a lot of deaths and significantly more staff members unwell. We really have the most amazing staff.

LakieLady · 16/04/2020 18:27

The only person I know who's been tested (and I only know him slightly, he's DSS's lodger) was positive, but he was asymptomatic.

No-one I know has died since this started, but I know several people (including DP & me) who've had fluey things that could have been C-19, but will never know.
