To think the amount of people we know who have died or are dying from CV is proportionately high?

Between DP and I, we know 3 people who have died and one who is very likely to due in the next 24 hours from/with Covid-19. We live in Yorkshire.

My old hairdresser who was 38 Sad DP's workmates husband who was a 60 year old GP (she is a nurse) and my workmates Mum who was in her 80's and lived in a care home but was very well on mothers day. My sisters FIL has early onset alzheimer's and is 58, currently in hospital but they had to complete a DNR for him this morning and they are refusing to admit him to critical care or for ventilation.

DP thinks this is probably an average amount that most people will see in this pandemic (he is frontline NHS so quite fatalistic) whereas I didn't think we would know this many people who would die, in what is essentially a month long period.

AIBU to think this is quite high or are you all seeing similar? It is very much adding to my long list of worries.

Only people I know of who have died were elderly and in Italy, relatives of SIL. I know a consultant anesthetist who was in hospital for a few days with it but is now recovering at home (40s, no underlying health conditions but of course will have had a high viral load). Otherwise just a few workmates with suspected CV, neither tested, both young and fit but completely wiped out by the virus and took weeks to recover.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 16/04/2020 18:40

I know two people on ventilators and seemingly unlikely to recover, know many people who have had symptoms including myself. It’s hard to get over. I’m 3weeks in and today is the first day I’ve not had to have a three hour sleep in the day (I’m talking had to almost literally crawl to bed as I was so tired). Makes me so grateful to be married to a wonderful man who is a great husband and hands on dad to our son.

Constant sounds of ambulances round here - not really near a hospital.

In West Midlands

Two of DH's colleagues have died (large organisation; people he knew of but didn't know personally) and one of mine who I did know well. All three were 50+ men.
I also know several people who have had it and recovered. Three of these were tested and confirmed (one was hospitalised and was seriously ill for several days) and four others who haven't been tested but are pretty sure that they have had it.

PsuedoSatisfactionBaby · 16/04/2020 18:41

I dont know anyone personally diagnosed or died from it. I feel very fortunate.

Standrewsschool · 16/04/2020 18:42

Don’t personally know anyone who has died from it, although some one in the village has died from it.

DCOkeford · 16/04/2020 18:43

Just thinking about it, very roughly speaking one person has died so far per 5,000 in the wider UK population

That's a bit of a questionable statistic, there have been 13,700 deaths with Covid 19, but only around 5,000 'excess deaths' over and above what is expected for this time of year.

It would be more accurate to say that approx 1 in ~13,000/14,000 are attributable directly to Coronavirus.

CoffeeRunner · 16/04/2020 18:44

I work in a hospital & have quite a lot of colleagues who have been diagnosed with or are assumed to have Covid. I have also obviously seen quite a few patients pass away with it too.

But personally, outside of work life, nope I don’t know of anyone being severely ill or passing away from it.

fascinated · 16/04/2020 18:44

Don’t even know anyone who has had it.

Harrysmum2020 · 16/04/2020 18:48

This thread is terrifying there are 3 separate grandparents who have died in my sons class there are 28 pupils in my sons class all these have been put on the parents Whatsapp this week alone.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 16/04/2020 18:48

I’m a nurse so lots of my work friends have had it, but only mildly and in terms of patients our hospital is yet to be majorly hit, we still have lots of beds including ITU capacity.

Toomanyapplesinthefruitbowl · 16/04/2020 18:48

This surely depends on your circle of acquaintances. I know of 9 people who’ve died from it, but I’m a church goer and 6 of those are members of our local church. The other three are parents of friends. We’re in the northwest.

stairway · 16/04/2020 18:49

One of my ward colleague died from it. She was healthy before. Her family chose a nice picture of her. I was wondering whether to choose a photo of myself if the worst happens but it might freak my husband out.

Alsohuman · 16/04/2020 18:49

I know one person who’s been infected and nobody who’s died.

bulliedintonamechange · 16/04/2020 18:50

Gosh haha don't know anyone who's even had it. I hope that's not right. Sorry for your losses

TiddlestheCat · 16/04/2020 18:51

Two of my friends friendsbeen hospitalised with it. And my cousin and her family have all had it (she's a paramedic) albeit mildly. You sound to be disproportionately unlucky.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 16/04/2020 18:52

That is bad luck, OP.

I only know a handful of people who have had it. 1 was briefly hospitalised. All have made a recovery - albeit a slow one. By all accounts it takes people time to bounce back....

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 16/04/2020 18:52

No. I dont know of a single person and I work in care!

TwistedFairytales · 16/04/2020 18:52

I don't know a single person who has had it, patients included and im a district nurse. Nor does anyone I know. And we live in Hertfordshire, supposedly the second worst affected area. So yes i think its disproportionately high.

iamapixie · 16/04/2020 18:54

That is a lot and must make it frightening. I only know 2 people who thought they had it but neither was tested. Ill at home for 7-10 days.
DP and I both had a slightly off day with a headache early on. Thought nothing of it until we realised he'd lost his sense of smell.
Elderly and very vulnerable family all fine too.
But I assume people we know have mostly had it, asymptomatically, due to work/tube/school/parties in London before lockdown.

TeacupDrama · 16/04/2020 18:54

I live in rural Scotland I know of 2 people that i very very vaguely knew that have died both 80 or nearly 80 and were already ill ( apart from more famous people or those on news like doctors) I know no-one in our village or even next town whose has it; never mind sick or dying with it but as there are only 160 cases in Highland which covers an area equal to about a quarter of england that is not surprising

Whenwillthisbeover · 16/04/2020 18:56

West Yorkshire here with a DD on the frontline, diagnosing patients every day.

I don’t know anyone that has even had it. The only people she knows are her patients.

Maybe it hasn’t reached us yet.

kimlo · 16/04/2020 18:59

my Grandmas cousin died, my friends great Aunt died and a few people in the local area.

I know a few people who have shown symptoms, but the one person I know who was tested (nhs worker) was negative.

I had flu at the very end of feb/start of march and my chest is still not feeling 100% now. That went around most of my work, my dh and my sister. But no test so no idea if it was an early case of covid-19 or the flu.

HoffiCoffi13 · 16/04/2020 18:59

In my village of approx 7200 we’ve had one death, in a care home.

Tulipstulips · 16/04/2020 19:00

Wiped out one of our local hospital wards. Real death rate alot higher than offical figures

Do you mean death rate or number of deaths?

0hbloodyhell · 16/04/2020 19:05

Herts/Beds/Bucks borders...
I know one person who was hospitalised on oxygen for about a week, her DH was ill but stayed at home and their early 20’s child didn’t get ill. Infected abroad.
One death, 60 something male who was overweight with heart disease. Well known in the community though so I think it brought it home to a lot of people.
