I think next year for abroad. End of August for UK. What do you think?

I’m going to say the start of July. For all holidays. Including international.

Not sure I'd be happy to be sitting in close proximity to possible carriers of the virus on a packed plane for a long while, and others may think the same of me. Nor would I be comfortable in an airport either.

Each to their own. Confidence will be a big factor, but others may not think like I do either.

Plenty of people are very confident and don't think about the potential danger. But they may spread it just the same. It's a tough one.

Let's consider supply & demand for a moment.... what do you think flights, AIRBNB, hotel rooms etc will cost?

Hmm?

The French president and other online whispers suggest that Europe may keep its borders closed until after the summer.

As we aren’t in the EU any more, that means we’re out. I did wonder how they’d cope without the normal influx of British tourists in some places, however I guess each country will holiday at home.

On the back of this I’ve cancelled our European holiday and booked for the uk instead, however there’s no guarantee on that either.

(And I wouldnt want to get sick abroad. If one of us fell ill on holiday in the uk, we’d drive home rather than rely on a small hospital in a tourist area)

Supply and demand will be a tricky one. If the household income has plummeted then a holiday abroad may not be a top priority.

My dad was just diagnosed with Covid 19 which he caught from a fella who was sitting beside him on a plane and coughed the whole way from Spain to Dublin! This was a flight on the 13th of March. Before everyone started restrictions and lockdowns.

I think holidays anywhere are not really going to be happening at all this year. I think non essential flights may resume early 2021. But I am trying to mentally think that 2020 is fully cancelled so that if things get better before next year I am pleasantly surprised

I’m overseas and my parents were booked to fly over (from uk) this weekend-obviously not happening. They’d also previously booked tickets for end of July for my dd’s birthday. Starting to feel panicky that it could be a long time before anyone can travel? We haven’t seen them since November, so it will be hard, especially so for them for not seeing their granddaughter.

I'm not bothered by foreign holidays. We booked a UK holiday for July and I'd like to see this happen. Not entirely sure though. Will wait and see.

We are meant to be going to the USA at the end of August to see a concert of all things. I think there is more chance of seeing blue snow. But if we do go I may invest in a hazchem suit.

I think U.K. holidays will be ok by July and hopefully they'll be very busy and put prices up a bit.... which will help places to stay in business. Busy tourist attractions will be limited and we'll have to queue but people won't care, they'll just want any sort of holiday by then. (I really, really hope places offer massive discounts to frontline workers)

Holidays abroad, I suspect they'll be expensive and inconvenient until a vaccine is widely available I'm afraid.

It works both ways - if we're still subject to sporadic lockdown and social distancing do we want loads of tourists turning up and vying for ventilators? I can't imagine any country without a cure or a vaccine is going to want to put more pressure on its healthcare system.

Next year for foreign holidays and I think the prices will go up a lot.

We've booked a safari holiday hopping around 3 African (neighbouring) countries in August - I doubt it'll go ahead and with things the way they are and we obviously can't get our vaccinations done now so not sure how it'll pan out with insurance if the holiday could go ahead but we couldn't travel as not vaccinated, but like pp I'm working on the basis it won't happen and if it does it's a bonus (also really bloody hoping the insurance pays out or we get a refund otherwise we won't be going anywhere for feckin years!)

Be nice if UK travel is allowed in summer At least

I think, prior to a vaccine it is all going to depend on whether or not you can gain immunity and have a test proving that you are immune. I foresee people being denied entry to countries if there isn’t immunity or a vaccine.

Report
DogInATent · 14/04/2020 23:10

I don't see much international tourism happening until:

  • someone figures out post-infection immunity is real (it's unknown at the moment and too many reports of people apparently re-infected or re-testing positive) and/or a vaccine is developed
  • there's a Covid visa system internationally agreed linked to your biometric passport for registering vaccination/immunity

Essential international travel will open up before tourism - visiting overseas family, essential business travel.

Until then it's going to be domestic travel only. And come next year we're non-EU and post-transition and likely to have been the worst affected/least controlled European nation as far as Covid is concerned. So expect no special favours for blue passports.

Expect a lot of nervousness in travel over the next 2-3 years as authorities look carefully for signs of a follow-up wave emerging.

The company I booked with for end of August (fancy once in a lifetime thingy) has suspended all holidays until 30th June. So they think -at this point - some travel restrictions will be lifted after that date. They do specialise in international travel, maybe they know more than us or are highly speculative.

PersonaNonGarter · 14/04/2020 23:13

I think things like closed cafes, hotels, museums, theatres will remain in place all summer.

You can probably go to Blackpool after June. You just can’t stay in a hotel, go on a ride or eat at a table.

I don’t think there will be any international flights this year.

The impact of Corona on each country will have been immense in terms of death rates, so why, when they’ve got things under control would they want to risk that by letting thousands of unknown people into their country?

Looking at our death rate I can’t imagine any country will be welcoming passengers from England anytime soon.

We’ve got a holiday booked to Turkey in July and my DH is clinging onto hope that it will still be going ahead, whereas I on the other hand have accepted that it won’t be.

Daffodil I thought that was just the Schengen group? Which we weren't in anyway so in or out of the EU makes no difference.

I'm now resigned to no foreign travel this year but would like to travel in the UK to see family (and preferably stay in a nice hotel whilst I'm there).

I dont think this year either. We have holiday booked for July to Spain but wouldn't be going regardless. I don't feel comfortable travelling abroad and want to be sure all this has calmed down before even stepping on a plane again.

I understand it must be really hard for people with family abroad though and no prospect of seeing them any time soon.

Report
KoalasandRabbit · 14/04/2020 23:31

Not sure - maybe next summer will be our next holiday but not booking anything until certain.

Got holiday booked for August and school trip for June, both won't go ahead. Not sure when travel will be allowed again but even when it is wouldn't want to go if insurance not covering and no vaccine.
