We had fireworks as well and it woke my youngest up and scared my eldest.
I was also disturbed by scenes pictured on social media and the news about crowds outside hospitals all very close together shoulder touching shoulder.

mrshoho · 17/04/2020 08:53

Yes and she (Jenny Harries) said the scientific evidence showed that large scale open aired events posed no risk. It is no wonder that people are not quick to believe the governments scientific evidence when it changed in a matter of days. Where is she these day btw? I wonder if she may have contracted the virus. I remember her sitting with the prime minister at the time when he could have been incubating the infection.

peridito · 17/04/2020 09:11

It is no wonder that people are not quick to believe the governments

That is such an important point . A few overoptimistic claims re home fingure prick tests I can almost forgive . I understand that it's a nightmare for the gov and that it's the "u"word times .

But the patronising smug attitude I can't . There is no respect or understanding for us plebs .

Horehound · 17/04/2020 09:24

42% say they are dealing with suspected covid-19 cases. Yesterday the government said just 15% of homes had reported a case

Well maybe both is true🤷 maybe the care homes haven't formally reported and so the government can only go buy actual reported cases...

Reastie · 17/04/2020 09:24

@RedToothBrush I’m enjoying (if that’s the right term) your thoughts and findings. Thank you.

Red the second wave. Have the govt ever actually said they anticipate a bigger second wave? Because all the info they’re giving now is they need to maintain all this for longer in order to prevent a second wave happening as if if we keep this up it won’t happen. I’m not saying I think that’s right, surely if that’s the case the measures will remain in place for months and only very very slowly and gradually lifted over many months so the level will be maintained not increased. Or do they know there will Inevitably be a big second wave they just don’t want to tell people to risk their compliance and mental health?

MurrayTheMonk · 17/04/2020 09:43

I don't know how they are reaching the care home figures as no one centrally collates them. There isn't a hotline to call in to to say we have a case or suspected case. We tell someone at the local authority-is the persons named social worker but I don't think it's necessarily being centrally recorded. Inevitably a lot would slip through the net as it doesn't all go to one person.
Grant Shapps seemed to suggest this morning that they were going off statistical models for it, which seems ridiculous to me.

MurrayTheMonk · 17/04/2020 09:45

I guess we are supposed to notify CQC in residential and nursing homes-but the form is Long and takes time to fill in-a separate form for each person. Very possible not all those are benign done and forms aren't processed at CQC in normal times for 10-14 days so I can only imagine how much longer it would take now.

MurrayTheMonk · 17/04/2020 09:47

And that doesn't apply to supported living services -which to the lay person would also be seen as a care home-it just has people with lower needs but they still all live in the same building, same staff etc etc...care home with a different name and the people need less personal care, but more other kinds of support, effectively.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 17/04/2020 09:53

We clapped out of our window as we have every week, and it's getting less and less every week. We also had a group of feral youths cycling in a group shouting "fuck the nhs" at the time. What a joy that was. The annoyed part of me wanted them to fall off their bikes and then say "ah well you won't want the nhs to fix you then will you"

onlinelinda · 17/04/2020 09:58

Care homes are a reflection of anywhere else. If it's in 42.% care homes, it's far more common in society than the figures allow. I still do not understand why there is so much emphasis on the numbers, when none of us are tested.

refraction · 17/04/2020 10:03

Yes perdito, and didnt she say that outside mass gathering, cheltehnham and football eg. were not really risk. Think someone else on this thread pointed that out.

*At the Science select committee yesterday they asked a professor about mass gatherings he said similar to Harries that people tend to stay with the same group when there. He then said that once a gathering was at 50 people then anymore than that made no difference at all to infection.

Hmmmmm*

So results day is back to normal. No wonder people are confused.

And those same scientists will say evidence shows how quickly the virus can spread through surface contamination. Can you imagine thousands of people using bathrooms and food/bar areas in closely confined spaces?

meercat23 · 17/04/2020 10:33

Really confused now. The WHO and EU are saying that the UK situation is so much worse that other parts of Europe. Their graph shows UK cases/deaths running much higher than other EU countries. In our daily press conferences the graphs they use show us tracking just below Italy. A PP explained that this was because of where they chose to start the UK graphs but surely things are either beginning to flatten or they are continuing ti rise sharply. it can't be both can it.

EmeraldShamrock · 17/04/2020 10:34

Am I reading right China had 1290 today on the worldometer.

Apparently Wuhan had unreported 50 percent of cases.

Anyone read this?
Mild cases in china produced very few antibodies, particularly in under 40s.
Theres also an article in wall steet journal but its behind a pay wall. Only 2-3% of doctors in wuhan had any antibodies

EmeraldShamrock · 17/04/2020 10:57

Apparently Wuhan had unreported 50 percent of cases Omg they haven't learnt a thing, will this ever be over.

Legoandloldolls · 17/04/2020 11:13

I think the UK is making the UK figures look lower than Italy in just how they choose to report. If they go from 50 deaths, we will just pop over the Italy line later. Unless they move the death criteria again.

The real figures that matter are infection % and from that death % but we will never know as were not testing

Biggerblackhole · 17/04/2020 11:16

As this is a thread about worry.. is it OK to say that my biggest worry is being judged?

I'm working from home with DC. Our street doesn't do The Clap, at all, though I know most nearby do. I prepped really early, around Feb half term and have been holed up with DC, we haven't gone anywhere in weeks except last week to get one shop in. We can survive on little. The most social contact I've had is posting on social media. And noone has said anything negative at all. But I'm finding myself paranoid. About being judged, not even sure why. Is this just what isolation does to you.

In reverse, I probably am quite judgemental. I'm exasperated seeing people who clap like seals once a week, but assuming the same people won't be (for example) writing to MPs or starting petitions, pushing for key workers to get fair pay (I'd like to see them get danger pay). It all seems superficial, though I can see why the clapping is done.

Biggerblackhole · 17/04/2020 11:18

Sorry to jump into the middle of the conversation about stats by the way, I can put this sort of question elsewhere if it's not so appropriate to the thread.

refraction · 17/04/2020 11:31

Bigger I honestly would not worry about being judged. I think everyone has their own issues at the moment. You do what you have to, to get through.

CrunchyCarrot · 17/04/2020 12:07

Have been listening to some of the Select Committee proceedings lead by Jeremy Hunt this morning. Prof Castello stated that it will need about 5-6 'waves' of this pandemic in order to give the 60% required for herd immunity. That is a sobering thought.
