I watched a documentary filmed in Lombardy about a week ago. They Mayor of the town in question said that they were not counting deaths out of hospitals - it was a town that was at the centre of the outbreak, but I can't remember the name!

Bergamo

OneForMeToo · 16/04/2020 14:18

Why does Nicola always need to get in first 😅

buttermilkwaffles · 16/04/2020 14:49

"The Public Health England data has been updated - this is provisional data and published before ONS, so the chart gives an indication of the excess deaths that will be seen in next week's ONS publication."

Worried About Coronavirus- thread 37

meercat-I've got a void room in my service and I've been under pressure for the last fortnight to take emergency's discharges from hospital. They couldn't tell me they would be tested so I've said no-I refuse to put my existing service users at risk and my staff under even more pressure than they are.
I won't accept anyone that hasn't been tested and I'm prepared to die on that hill at the moment. Lots of home managers would be instructed to accept the referrals by either the LA or their bosses, but fortunately for me they haven't pushed me-yet!

EmeraldShamrock · 16/04/2020 16:06

861 UK deaths on the worldometers today.

Legoandloldolls · 16/04/2020 16:09

So it looks like there was a delay on BH death reporting and were not at peak yet?

WhoWants2Know · 16/04/2020 16:11

I don't know, that isn't the highest number we've had, so maybe we really are coming past the peak?

A 19-year-old pizza delivery man has tested positive for coronavirus in Delhi, prompting authorities to quarantine a total of 89 people, including 72 people in houses of South Delhi where he made deliveries.

“A total of 17 people, including the owner of the shop and other delivery boys, have been put under institutional quarantine. The shop has been shut,” said B.M. Mishra, District Magistrate (South Delhi).

“72 people in houses where he made the delivery have been put under home quarantine,” he added.

Mr. Mishra said the delivery man used a mask and a pair of gloves while working and was currently under treatment in Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital. “We are yet to ascertain how he got infected with the virus,” he said.

It is hard to understand why anyone would think this is acceptable unless they don't think that care home residents matter. I hate to believe that but the actions to date don't inspire confidence.

YOu are totally right to take the stand you have and I hope your bosses continue to support you.

From the Telegraph’s rolling live corona news

US looking for investigation to find if coronavirus came from Chinese lab

President Donald Trump's administration is urging an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, saying it doesn't rule out that it came from a laboratory researching bats in Wuhan, China.

Beijing has said that the virus, which has killed more than 138,700 people worldwide, was likely transmitted to humans late last year at a Wuhan "wet market" that butchered exotic animals - a longtime focus of concern for public health experts.

But The Washington Post and Fox News both quoted anonymous sources who voiced concern that SARS CoV-2 may have come - accidentally - from a sensitive bioresearch center in the metropolis.

"We're doing a full investigation of everything we can to learn how it is the case that this virus got away, got out into the world and now has created so much tragedy - so much death - here in the United States and all around the world," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News.

He did not reject the reports and said that the United States knew that the Wuhan laboratory "contained highly contagious materials."

Hmm, I’m getting a bad feeling about parallels between “highly contagious materials” and “weapons of mass destruction”. The attacks on the WHO are to pre-emptively discredit them, prevent a Hans Blix type figure emerging to be a credible critic.

Nothing like cranking up the war machine to channel discontent and kickstart the economy.

Why do the press keep asking the same questions every day and pushing for information about coming out of lockdown when there are far more important questions we could be pushing for answers for 😡

Yep! It is so boring now.

Also crass when near 1000 people die each day.

They aren't obviously going to tell us as they think we cannot understand the simple message.

MarshaBradyo · 16/04/2020 17:33

Also they don’t have the data yet. I’m listening to R4 and they keep pushing it.

What do you think we have in Porton Down? I went for a job at PD working on Anthrax. I went for a job working at the then central veterinary laboratory working on CJD. Porton Down does military research. I was too shit scared to take the job offer and find out what goes on there. Just the interview was scary enough

Agree listening to the Science select committee they just don't really know for certain.

“ Hmm, I’m getting a bad feeling about parallels between “highly contagious materials” and “weapons of mass destruction”.

Yes.

TheStarryNight · 16/04/2020 17:52

I do know what goes on at Porton Down unfortunately. It’s pretty infamous for horrendous things it does to test animals. Used to work in the University sector and it’s pretty infamous amongst some researchers there too.

A lot of countries, including us, the US and China do undertake military research. But that’s not the same as showing that such a lab is the source of the outbreak (either accidentally or deliberately).

And big, splashy, emotionally charged accusations and attacks are good at swaying onlookers and deflecting attention from shortcomings in how the situation is being handled. They are not proof that this originated in a lab. They can be useful in getting people to bypass critical thinking, lower their standards of evidence and externalise blame rather than ask questions at home.

It’s a lightening rod for growing anger, stop in blowing up in the administration’s direction.

Ive just found out that the already insulting social care badge suggested last night is something that care staff have to actually purchase themselves. Its a joke, it really is!

HeIenaDove · 16/04/2020 19:02

Bloody hell Murray What a fucking piss take. Angry

justchecking1 · 16/04/2020 19:11

IANAL but I can't see them getting very far with that complaint. They're being no more discriminated against than anyone else. No one can get a delivery slot!

"Some of the claimants could shop safely in-store if their local supermarket was willing to make reasonable adjustments for them, but are prevented from doing so, for example, by having to queue to enter the store – with no seats while they are waiting – or not being allowed to bring a companion with them to help them shop."

^^ This seems an odd argument. If you've got a companion who could go with you then why couldn't they go for you? No one is supposed to be shopping in twos, it makes it an unnecessary journey for one of you.

I'm not saying it's not a particularly hard time to be disabled, it is, but I'm not sure this type of complaint has much mileage in it

TheStarryNight · 16/04/2020 19:47

Oh for god’s sake @MurrayTheMonk. That’s just ridiculous.
