@mascotte everyone is entitled to claim Universal Credit. I know its cr*p. I know enough about the system through service. However there are ways to get some help even though it's not perfect.

Yes the economy is important. In this country you aren't left high and dry even though the system is difficult to navigate

My daughter lives abroad. She will get 3 months employment insurance. No additional help on top with rent and so on. Yes we will help her out ofcourse

If they dont get this pandemic sorted then there wont be an economy to rebuild. Lockdown it has to be

The government have found the money to prove that the economy is on the backburner whilst we dealing with this crisis

tomemily · 06/04/2020 01:26

No way
Not for very many weeks or even months will lock down end
Anyone who thinks otherwise is in cloud cookoo land

starlight13 · 06/04/2020 09:40

No. We haven't even begun to reach the peak yet and so many people are still floundering the rules. I imagine it will be like this until mid-end May at least. You only need to look at the stats of other countries ahead of us to see that.

Teddybear27 · 06/04/2020 09:44

The lockdown doesn't end after the three weeks, the government are reviewing it. As there are more people dying everyday I think we will be like this for a while....

Actionhasmagic · 06/04/2020 09:45

Think months. This is new normal

Sapphiresunrise · 06/04/2020 10:23

No. This lockdown is not going to continue for months on end. A few more weeks ok, but some people would have you believe we'll be indoors until September. China haven't done that, even Italy, the worst affected country in the world, are now looking at lifting restrictions and it's only been less than 1 month.
How is it viable to have lockdown for several months on end ? Even until June is pushing it.
Something's got to give eventually, when this lockdown (which is absolutely necessary right now) is costing billions per day. How many lives will be ruined ? Can cancer patients wait indefinitely for an operation ? Can people survive on thin air ?

Obviously they won't go "As of tomorrow, everything is back open !" sadly. But these conditions are simply not viable for more than a few more weeks.

MarshaBradyo · 06/04/2020 10:25

Not months and months no. The economic impact is too great.

Atm we are in a corner I had hoped the antibody test was a glimmer of a way out, but a knock back. Hopefully will reappear but seems timing is against us, taking too long.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 06/04/2020 10:25

End of May beginning of June from all the articles ive seen.

sleepwhenidie · 06/04/2020 10:27

The lockdown is costing the economy £2.4bn a day. It can’t continue for months (neither will it be done by the weekend).

poppadopolis · 06/04/2020 10:30

I'm not 100% convinced the antibody test is going to help. Yes it'll tell you if you've got it at that point but what if you pick it up the following day?

That isn't what the antibody test does. It tells you if you have had it at some point in the past and developed antibodies. It can be reasonably inferred that you would then be immune but that is not certain at this point.

Kazzyhoward · 06/04/2020 10:41

But even people are immune, they could still pass it on by flawed personal hygiene, i.e. not washing hands, not using gloves, etc. They are still able to pick it up and pass it on via surfaces etc.

lowlandLucky · 06/04/2020 10:42

Naw

catscatscatseverywhere · 06/04/2020 10:42

I suspect lockdown will end in June and another one will start in October or November.

Verily1 · 06/04/2020 10:44

The earliest will be mid June

Kazzyhoward · 06/04/2020 10:46

Full lock down won't last for months, but places where you can't social distance such as restaurants, cafes, leisure, schools, etc aren't going to re-open for months. There'll be slight relaxations, such as allowing more shops to open, but with the same kind of social distancing precautions we see at supermarkets, i.e. queues to get in, numbers limited etc. Anywhere you can't practice social distancing won't be re-opening any time soon at all and that includes workplaces, which will have to change procedures etc to ensure safety of staff, customers, suppliers, etc.

In those few days between announcements, before pubs, cafes etc were ordered to close, many tried to adopt social distancing measures by reducing the number of tables etc - unfortunately, things moved too fast to see how viable that was. So that's probably the first stage of getting back to socialising, but even then, it's months away.

UYScuti · 06/04/2020 10:47

I know lockdown is bad for the economy but some aspects of it are so good for the planet, surely that has some value?
shouldn't we be able to find some way to make what's good for the planet also good for us, the air is cleaner, our lungs are healthier!

HoffiCoffi13 · 06/04/2020 11:00

Think months. This is new normal

The government simply can not afford to pay out £2.4bn a day for months. It cannot happen. That’s not to say things are going to go back to ‘normal’ any time soon, but like in other countries (China and Italy for example) there will be a gradual easing of restrictions as soon as it is reasonably feasible. The restrictions may be implemented again later in the year, but this current situation cannot go on for months.
If the current restrictions were to go on for months, there would be no economy. No jobs for anyone to go back to.

Ludways · 06/04/2020 11:46

No. Your DH couldn't be wrongerer!

Sapphiresunrise · 06/04/2020 12:06

This is not the 'new normal'. This is a temporary solution.

Oblomov20 · 06/04/2020 12:24

No. No chance.
In fact, based on crowds in Richmond Park, I think guidelines will be made stricter.

mynameisbiggles · 06/04/2020 13:08

Absolutely not. We may see a lessening of restrictions mid-May. But if the minority who flout the social distancing guidance continue then it could be even longer.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 06/04/2020 13:29

This is new normal

There isn't an eye roll emoji big enough.
FGS, it's stupid how people post as fact their own opinion and can't see all it does is cause anxiety/panic.
Nobody knows when it will end,it's pointless speculating, otherwise you get ridiculous statements like Ms/MrDoom upthread telling us it's the new norm like they Know Things we don't.
All we can do is take it one day at a time and see.
That's what I'm doing anyway.

Sounsociable · 06/04/2020 14:21

This is new normal
While I realise we are in relatively early days of lockdown, in practical terms this cant be the new normal for a sustained period of time. A large proportion of the population are not working, the government cant keep paying 80% wages forever, banks won't give indefinite mortgage holidays, and DWP is already under pressure from all the new applicants for UC.
That's not to say the economy is more important than peoples lives but we do need some money to buy essentials (even MN essentials!) And pay bills. There was a section on the news yday where many low paid workers in Italy were literally down to their last few euros.

MRSsqueak · 06/04/2020 16:29

not a chance

FelicisNox · 06/04/2020 19:02

Nope.

We haven't peaked yet and there will be a 2nd peak within weeks of the 1st.

You can all kiss your summer holidays goodbye.
