That is so shocking and awful.
remembering how impressed and worried we were about china building new hospitals almost overnight, and the lockdown
and now it is here.

No it isn't necessary to accept WHO is right on China in order to think the UK ballsed things up
I think we messed up big time, quite a long time ago,in the two months that has flown by.
I also think China lied. They often do, it's nothing unusual.
I also never understand the 'armchair expert' comments from some people on mn. Some of us do more than sit at home painting pictures with toddlers you know. Imagine!

I believe China figures. Obviously there were many more because it wasnt until early January that they realised the severity and it was a new disease so figures from the start of December wouldn't have been included I dont think. But once reporting started I believe they are correct. I think they are simply testing more people, even those with very mild cases. We have far more cases then the official line because we are only testing hospital patients. Think of it not as we've had just 3735 new cases today, more that there were 3735 people admitted into hospital today with this disease.

I find Germanys numbers much more unbelievable then China's tbh. Their death rate is incredibly low in comparison with every other country, even lower than China

Did the female doctor who first sent the message about it turn up? She disappeared a few weeks/days (god time means nothing now) ago

the female doctor denied actually blowing the whistle

China lied for sure!
I was living in guangdong while it happened. I am in Europe now and find the lock down is stricter here.
The first cases of the virus were in early December and China didn't take action until the end of January. The spring festival had already started so millions of people had travelled all over the country and abroad already. Traditionally people return to their home towns and could have carried the virus to many small towns and cities before the public were aware. Many of those people wouldn't have access to decent hospitals and possibly not the money to pay.
The virus had spread freely for two months before any action. Their figures grossly out.

That's why I question it @cockcrowfarm as cases existed in Dec & millions of people travelled so logically it had to have spread further.

And you believe what an undemocratic, communist state tells you? They have minimised their outbreak to make it appear a pandemic that their poor practices created, wasn't as bad as it really was. I think they hoped it would be less virulent in other countries.

How could a virus which no one knew existed and was incredibly infectious, no cure and no test at the time it appeared, in a densely populated area, cause as few infections and deaths as they say? USA was in flat out denial and refused to act early, and is now having a similar explosion of cases. Their death toll is already horrendous. How could China have escaped a similar death toll? They were arresting the doctors who were telling the people about this new virus, so in compete denial initially, and wasting weeks.

South Korea only did so well because they had a trial run of an epidemic novel virus with MURS. So they had a system in place to act with urgency, rapid introduction of testing, and a scary tracking system of all their citizens (via an App) to track down infected people and isolate them. They also didn't close cinemas, restaurants etc, but told people not to gather there, which they did, so effectively social distancing and a near lockdown without the name.

Unless every person who died in every country this year had been/is independently tested there will never be certainty on the number of deaths in any country, discussions of this type won't achieve any meaningful results

China clearly aren't telling the truth.

I wonder if any humanitarian agencies will ever be allowed in to find the truth?

My brother has been in lockdown in China for nearly 4 months now. Their figures are in no way accurate. Just think about the number of people, the close living conditions and the size of the country.....
It has spread way way beyond Wuhan but not being reported. Today he managed to access FaceBook for the first time as it is normally blocked.
I shudder to think what the true numbers are out there

Has anyone else heard the rumours of millions of inactive mobile phones in China, suggesting that the death toll is much higher?

Can that be true?

alloutoffucks

The China figures are pure fantasy. They’re claiming 2.4 deaths per million.

Italy has 254.2 deaths per million.

But let me guess, the Chinese are totally infallible, right? Grin

My hypothesis - they tried to cover it up initially, hoping that it would be limited in its spread. Once the true extent was realised they then would not admit the scale of the cover up to the world.

The article linked to up thread suggests if China had acted just three weeks earlier 95% of cases would have been prevented. That's huge in the context of a global pandemic.

Have you heard that story about the scorpion crossing the river on the back of a frog? He stings the frog. As the frog dies, he asks the scorpion why he stung him, as they are both going to die now. The scorpion replies 'i couldn't help it. It's in my nature'

= China and lying
