That is so shocking and awful.
remembering how impressed and worried we were about china building new hospitals almost overnight, and the lockdown
and now it is here.

@mangofeverdream - I was speaking of the Chinese community in the U.K. - my comments in that post reflected the incidents of racism against the Chinese community in the UK.

And yes, in the U.K., they are seen as the community that rarely complains or kicks up a fuss.

All I see on this thread and all the other China threads is a deep suspicion and mistrust of the Chinese government which then translates into harassment and abuse for people like me on the street. It's nasty

BovaryX · 05/04/2020 22:00

Thanks @BovaryX. I agree - the determined attempt to shut down the debate stands out to me very clearly in this thread and others. Just as well there are well informed posters such as your good self with the courage to call it out despite the tactics being deployed across social media to suppress free speech on this topic. Thank you

The social media manipulation needs to be exposed. This global pandemic has put much of the planet into house arrest. To suggest that its origins and spread can't be discussed because it will cause racism? That's a manipulative tactic and it's evident on this thread.

Porseb · 05/04/2020 22:01

Here's the other thing @mangofeverdream - the Chinese community in the U.K. is NEVER known as expats.

We're ALWAYS immigrants

Expats as a term is usually reserved for westerners living in Asia or regions outside of the west (although thankfully the new world order is moving on now and I see a lot more Indian or Chinese expats working for multinationals in Asia)

Porseb · 05/04/2020 22:02

@bovaryx - did you check the Facebook ad library for those pages the link you posted was making?

BovaryX · 05/04/2020 22:03

@Porseb
Not interested in engaging with you.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/04/2020 22:06

‘Your good self ‘seems to be shutting down the discussion by ignoring comments made by other people.

MangoFeverDream · 05/04/2020 22:06

All I see on this thread and all the other China threads is a deep suspicion and mistrust of the Chinese government which then translates into harassment and abuse for people like me on the street

One should have a deep mistrust of the Chinese government. It’s not racist to call them out, and I have no fear of being called racist by someone who thinks criticising the Chinese government leads to racist incidents somehow.

We have to speak out for those in Wuhan who have been silenced and disappeared. This is something I could not do in China ...

LaurieFairyCake · 05/04/2020 22:07

No one believes this

FortunesFavour · 05/04/2020 22:10

Sure is evident on this thread @BovaryX. See the 3 posts above yours. Insinuations of inciting racism - tick. Mockery and derision - tick.

Anyway, it won’t stop the debate. The deliberate spin and manipulation is clear to spot so those pursuing this tactic can be easily identified and ignored/challenged (delete according to preference).

Signing off this thread now - the same tactics will continue to be deployed ad nauseum and they’re so blindingly obvious that we no longer need to call it out (on this thread at least).

BovaryX · 05/04/2020 22:10

Shanghai
I have repeatedly told you that I don't want to engage with you and you keep relentlessly replying to me. You don't get to dictate who people ignore or who they respond to. But claiming that discussion of the origins of this virus is triggering racism? That is a deliberate manipulative attempt to stop discussion. Bug someone else.

Porseb · 05/04/2020 22:12

@mangofeverdream - I don't have an issue with you calling out the Chinese government but I have an issue with people dismissing the fact that as a person who looks Chinese, I have been experiencing a fair bit of abuse and harassment as a result of this situation.

I read comments here from people who have probably never travelled to China or any other part of Asia calling for a ban on wet markets, referring to them as dirty and disgusting without understanding what they are and how local communities all over Asia use them.

I made the correlation with shoes indoors as an example.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/04/2020 22:16

You don’t get to decide who comments. Are you trying to control the narrative? I would have expected better from your good self.

FortunesFavour · 05/04/2020 22:20

Just ignore them @BovaryX. They don’t like being called out. They will continue to needle you because that’s what they’re being paid for!

ShanghaiDiva · 05/04/2020 22:22

I’m being paid for this...who knew?
This gets better and better.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/04/2020 22:23

@Porseb
Hope you are getting paid too!

MangoFeverDream · 05/04/2020 22:25

the Chinese community in the U.K. is NEVER known as expats

How you define yourself is your own business. Indeed Chinese people do form expat communities all across the globe, but I have no interest in talking about those who’ve settled in the UK.

I’m sorry that you’ve experienced harassment, but you are strangely linking it to criticisms of the Chinese government. See my post above.

I read comments here from people who have probably never travelled to China or any other part of Asia calling for a ban on wet markets, referring to them as dirty and disgusting without understanding what they are

I have too and have explained multiple times why wet markets are not a problem, though live animal ones do pose a threat (those were banned in my area, only butchered meats were allowed).

Of course they don’t know! They can only understand what the media tells them. The media says wet markets are bad out of ignorance and they don’t know any different. But hopefully these threads have educated some.

I made the correlation with shoes indoors as an example yeah, but, wearing shoes indoors is a disgusting and filthy habit? No one enters my home with shoes on (unless it’s the in-laws...)

Porseb · 05/04/2020 22:29

Hahaha - getting paid! If only ....

Social media manipulation works every way, whether it's Russian bots, Trump's team or the Brexit agenda.

Understanding that we are in the middle of a propaganda war means being able to see all sides and not allowing ourselves to be manipulated by what we read (on social media or any media)

I think I may be having an even bigger chuckle than your good self.
I really need to get a copy of the propaganda playbook. Shall I ask mumsnet if that would be considered an essential purchase?

Porseb · 05/04/2020 22:35

@mangofeverdream but it's those that have settled in the U.K. or the US or any other country where they're a minority that are experiencing an increase in xenophobic behaviour during this pandemic and for me, it isn't helped by BoJo and his team suddenly saying to the press that China is to blame.

They didn't say in Jan that China is to blame - they started this last week and the rhetoric has stepped up since. Trump didn't help with his Chinese virus tweet several weeks ago either.

It feels very much like the leaders in the west didn't take precaution or action early enough and now faced with the prospect of thousands dying and their electorate turning on them, they're looking for a scapegoat

I think it's bullying behaviour to accuse people on a parenting forum of being paid by a foreign government to influence views.

Porseb · 05/04/2020 22:47

Maybe the word I'm looking for isn't bullying - it's not libellous either is it? Nasty - maybe it's just nasty.

You will excuse me but I do speak another 3 languages on top of English and it's late, and I've had a hard day's work and I can't think of the word I'm looking for in English

FortunesFavour · 05/04/2020 22:48

And I think it’s bullying behaviour to use the disgraceful instances of racism against Chinese people (carried out by bigoted idiots) in an obvious attempt to shut down discussion the origins of the virus which will inevitably lead to recurrences.

So different strokes for different folks I suppose.
