Public are being asked to not go there. Does anyone know what happened??

So in the midst of a critical incident your 'nearest and dearest' texted you to say no oxygen left at all.....?

Ellapaella · 04/04/2020 17:37

If there are suddenly a lot of patients needing high flow oxygen they may be concerned that they won't have enough if they keep admitting people who will likely need the same.

Sounsociable · 04/04/2020 17:39

I work in manufacturing and we use oxygen all the time. We havent been able to get any for weeks and our suppliers are not answering the phone, I assume all their resources now are concentrated on medical grade oxygen.

Sounsociable · 04/04/2020 17:42

I saw an article on bbc website saying the hospital was closed due to oxygen supplies but only allowing women about to give birth to go there at the moment.

Is there such a thing as “medical grade” oxygen? Surely oxygen is oxygen?

I would have made the assumption no one is answering the phone because they’re following advice and have shut down. What if it’s a hospital ringing?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/04/2020 17:51

All of the pubs have closed down for the duration - they use oxygen ifor the pumps/beer - could that not be repurposed?

HazelBite · 04/04/2020 17:51

Unfortunately due to hospitals being closed in the past in Hemel Hempstead, and St Albans, Watford has become the main hospital in a fairly heavily populated area (Commuter belt).
Sadly the old Hemel hospital is now being used as a morgue.

Sounsociable · 04/04/2020 17:53

micah
The suppliers e use have pharmaceutical grade oxygen, aviation, industrial grade , food fresh and industrial grade listed. I dont know how/whether the actual gas is differently stored or produced or whether it's to do with the bottles or canisters it's in.

DarnedSocks · 04/04/2020 17:53

I don't understand why hospitals were closed. We have a growing population. Don't we need more rather than less?

Sounsociable · 04/04/2020 17:54

Sorry that should have said medical grade last instead of industrial.

mencken · 04/04/2020 17:54

we wouldn't vote for higher taxes. Simples!

GivenchyD · 04/04/2020 17:56

'There is no joy in my predictions either Ygritte let me be very clear on that. Sorry OP for sidetracking from your thread.'

Oh weht. It was no great prediction that we'd be in lockdown was it? We all knew, even those medical experts advising the Government, imagine that!! It was just when, as has been said on other threads. Some struggle complying with lockdown so if it had been done in Feb people would not be doing it now. Now is the right time.

A technical glitch in a hospital does not mean the dam has burst. Are you Piers Morgan?

Frariedeamin · 04/04/2020 17:56

@HazelBite it has a morgue as part of everyday operation, it is not specifically being repurposed for one. Let’s not be dramatic.
Thousands of people were out in Cassiobury park (Watford) today. The police forced the council to shut the carpark and were breaking up picnics. Absolutely unreal.

notimagain · 04/04/2020 17:59

Planes don't actually carry oxygen as it could cause a fire if it leaked.

Sorry but that's not quite right - only some aircraft use chemical generators, many actually do carry bottled oxygen for passengers and crew for medical and emergency use...either in big bottles under the floor that supply an O2 ring main (bit like the hospitals may have) and/or in walkround botttles for crew use.

There has a bit of relevance to today's reported problems because there was certainly some talk at my place of work (aviation related) with helping out with the logistics of oxygen supply to hospitals...not sure how far the plan has got

Wehttam · 04/04/2020 18:06

Givenchy 🏳️ I surrender! Please, take me to your masters, I am not worthy 😭

Lenny1980 · 04/04/2020 18:07

BBC actually says a technical issue, not that they have run out of oxygen.

Hercwasonaroll · 04/04/2020 18:13

Mn crazy at its finest on this thread!!

Scrulytrumptious · 04/04/2020 18:14

I have a grandchild in Watford General Hospital, admitted through a&e this morning. They will probably need surgery tomorrow in which case they have been told they will have to be moved to another hospital. Because there is no oxygen.

Scoobygang7 · 04/04/2020 18:18

@SchadenfreudePersonified pubs use co2 and nitrogen, not oxygen.

GivenchyD · 04/04/2020 18:26

'I surrender! Please, take me to your masters, I am not worthy '

At last wehht well done. It must get embarrassing pretending everything is your idea.

Isn't there an online course in resilience you could try? These are trying times and your 'the dam has burst!!' hysterics help no one.

Disclaimer I'm not on anyone's 'payroll' before that is parroted.

Whilst most comments here are more dramatic the BBC are reporting it was/is a technical issue with the equipment rather than shortages.

bathsh3ba · 04/04/2020 18:32

Wehttam's post reminded me of my 12yo's message to me at the beginning of all this: 'First death in England! ABORT! ABORT!'. She has since calmed down...

Being on high levels of adrenaline won't help people here, we don't need to fight or flee, we just need to stay put and take care of ourselves. We can do that best if we keep as calm as possible.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 04/04/2020 18:32

Shush, don't go bringing common sense into it lol

mrshoho · 04/04/2020 18:35

@HazelBite Yes and to add it is the only hospital within this trust with an accident and emergency department. Casualties were being directed to Northwick Park, Barnet, Hillingdon, etc all already having their own problems. It is actually a big deal that this hospital was closed to emergencies.
