Did China lie?

I was vaguely suspicious of the Chinese governments figures at the start of the outbreak although towards the end began to have more faith that the government were being honest.

Michael Gove’s comments along with the alarming stats from ours and other countries (numbers, ages, health conditions etc) are making wonder whether the Chinese government covered up a fair bit and I’m worried about where this leaves countries around the world... Talk me down...

Course they bloody did!

CaryStoppins · 29/03/2020 20:18

Yes, definitely seems like their numbers are way off.

Makes you wonder about the demographics too.

catscatscatseverywhere · 29/03/2020 20:19

I don’t think they have ever told the truth. Their data is one stinky lie.

Reginabambina · 29/03/2020 20:19

Well they’re constantly lying about all kinds of things, despotic regimes tend to do that. No idea if they’ve lied about this recently but they certainly did in the beginning at age rate.

PicsInRed · 29/03/2020 20:19

Yes.

What do you think, based on everything you know about China over the last 70 years?

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 29/03/2020 20:20

I also wonder about their demographics.

What do you think they have lied about?

I think it would have been easier for them to contain, because it originated in one area. They were able too lockdown that area .
Chase down other transmission.

But what I'm wondering about is how China is faring now whilst the rest of the entire world is on its knees.

Cremebrule · 29/03/2020 20:23

If the demographics are out I think that would be more alarming than number of deaths as policies have been based on protecting the vulnerable based on Chinese data. It seems the Italian data is showing similar though in terms of demographics.

PicsInRed · 29/03/2020 20:23

This.
Also wondering about those preliminary reports around lung, heart and kidney damage.

That initial report around male infertility read like one of the PRC's other coronavirus hints. So I'm watching that space carefully.

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2020 20:24

What do you think they lied about?

They locked down early and comprehensively

This is what worries me.

@MarshaBradyo I worry they lied about demographics and numbers. Then it all suddenly went quiet. My cousin lives in Chengdu and seems to think they are being honest and have it under control which is why I wasn’t more suspicious.

Umm even if they didn’t lie I cannot see how they can know for certain. It was a new virus when they saw it and the first doctor who said “umm this looks suspicious” was told to shut up! So realistically there must have been at least three weeks worth of cases (both illnesses and deaths) that happened between the first incidents in the market and being recognised as a problem in by the Chinese government... that is a lot of cases to not count even if they counted accurately after that!

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2020 20:29

Do you mean the age group? Tbh I’ve forgotten what they said, that it was only a certain age

I'm also going to pin my colours to the mast and say I don't believe this came from that fish market. Wuhan biolab. Negligence? Accident? Maybe.

But wouldn’t it be a bit shit for a bio weapon, killing mainly the elderly and people with health problems? Surely they’d have made something more potent?

@LalalalalaLlama which other ones have?

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 29/03/2020 20:36

Llama surely there is more to add to that?

What did China lie about do you think?

There's a brilliant link to a paper from Italy on the data thread that shows it's mainly men (70:30 iirc) and very high percentage of older than 65.
They say their data matches what China said.

NemophilistRebel · 29/03/2020 20:37

If they lied should they pay for the rest of the worlds costs associated with the spread of this?

DirtyDripSpout · 29/03/2020 20:37

I don't think we will ever know the real truth. Maybe in several years - like the Chernobyl disaster.

However, I'm sure China is not the only country that does not have accurate figures. Even in the UK, not everyone with or without symptoms have been tested.

PotsofChoc · 29/03/2020 20:38

They definitely ‘withheld’ information. When this whole thing started, the numbers, the demographic, the situation now. Basically about everything...
