It's hard to say. The WHO backed up China's reporting a couple of weeks ago. But the news story about mobile phones dropping out of use seemed credible.

Re The breathing thing
Where he talked about there is society?

He sounded ok to me, not breathless maybe a slight change

IronNeonClasp · 30/03/2020 09:19

@TheElementsOfMedical - absolutely.

Stayed off MN yesterday posted a couple of times in the morning. Still no one takes it seriously. Like fucking sheep. I'm giving up a bit really. No one seems to question "why is everyone wearing a mask in China?"; "why are they spraying streets??" and other stuff.

Have to go to the shop today. Really don't want to :(

RedToothBrush · 30/03/2020 09:19

Omg!!!

If you want cheering up this is the story to read today.

Read the whole thing. It's hilarious.

Astrophysicist gets magnets stuck up nose while inventing coronavirus device
Australian Dr Daniel Reardon ended up in hospital after inserting magnets in his nostrils while building a necklace that warns you when you touch your face

The 27 year-old astrophysicist, who studies pulsars and gravitational waves, said he was trying to liven up the boredom of self-isolation with the four powerful neodymium magnets.

And

Reardon said he placed two magnets inside his nostrils, and two on the outside. When he removed the magnets from the outside of his nose, the two inside stuck together. Unfortunately, the researcher then attempted to use his remaining magnets to remove them.

“At this point, my partner who works at a hospital was laughing at me,” he said. “I was trying to pull them out but there is a ridge at the bottom of my nose you can’t get past.

“After struggling for 20 minutes, I decided to Google the problem and found an article about an 11-year-old boy who had the same problem. The solution in that was more magnets. To put on the outside to offset the pull from the ones inside.

And

“My partner took me to the hospital that she works in because she wanted all her colleagues to laugh at me. The doctors thought it was quite funny, making comments like ‘This is an injury due to self-isolation and boredom.’”

Thanks RTB

I am going to send that to my separate Science Physics class they will think it's hilarious.

mrshoho · 30/03/2020 09:37

Grin loved the bit where he googled and found that an 11 year old had done this.

SistemaAddict · 30/03/2020 09:37
Grin

Can anyone help me with this please:

I started with symptoms over three weeks ago now and still have a tight chest and dry cough (asthma type cough from tight chest) despite large doses of inhaled steroids and preventer.

Dd1 is full of snot and a cough that is not improving after about a week.

Dd2 is mainly recovered and DS is free of fever now and only coughed a few times. He's a bit snotty and sneezy though.

Everyone is over the 7 day mark. When can we venture out? Well, dds venture out as I'm high risk with my asthma so I'm cocooned and they are old enough to pop to the garage and pick up milk (and chocolate). I can't get any delivery slots from anywhere and have no adults to help out unless I use the local group. I'm happy for us all the stay in for the foreseeable if needs be but am just wondering if dds can go to the shop as they are over the 7 day mark?

Horehound · 30/03/2020 09:39

Lol I'm surprised they had to look up using more magnets were required. Surely that is obvious and im not an astrophysicist ConfusedWink

RedToothBrush · 30/03/2020 09:42

Astrophysicists are known for being clever but not necessarily having common sense.

Somelady · 30/03/2020 09:44

I've no references bercows but sure that patients can shed virus for over four weeks following hospital admission

MP goes back to work as a doctor to help colleagues during the coronavirus pandemic
'It was inspiring to see NHS staff, as always, working hard and preparing'

A Tory MP has gone back to work as a doctor to help his NHS colleagues as they struggle with the pressures of the coronavirus epidemic.

Dr Kieran Mullan - the MP for Crewe and Nantwich - started volunteering as a doctor again on Friday.

I believe former MP Sarah wollaston was also planning to return.

I am awaiting the announcement of the return of Dr Liam Fox

Government set to cap university admissions amid Covid-19 chaos
Exclusive: Strict limits on student numbers could avoid admissions free-for-all

UK university campuses are closed and teaching has moved online. To avoid certain universities hoovering up domestic students to fill their courses, leaving other, less prestigious institutions with empty lecture theatres, the pain will be spread through the introduction of a cap, it is understood.

“Unless there are significant developments, this will happen,” said one policymaker involved in the discussions between the government and universities.

The imposition of a cap means that students currently going through the application process are set to have their choices restricted. It also means some students will not be able to attend universities at which they have been offered place.

The policy was backed by the board of Universities UK at a virtual meeting held on Friday, although it was strongly opposed by some leading universities, including several members of the Russell Group of research-intensive institutions

Pishposhpashy · 30/03/2020 09:52

I didn't think Johnson sounded ill or breathless at all to be honest.

StrawberryJam200 · 30/03/2020 09:53

Bercows look at the official NHS advice, but isn’t it 14 days from first person’s symptom onset for all; if others show symptoms it’s 7 days for them?

See here www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-advice/

Somelady · 30/03/2020 09:57

Bercows if I owned that shop and your dds were coming I'd want you to disinfect their hands and out a scarf over their mouth

NettleTea · 30/03/2020 09:59

perhaps that Cunard cruise ship could bring back all the people stranded in Australia and New Zealand!

Eeyoresstickhouse · 30/03/2020 10:04

Red interesting article. Thanks for sharing that. Working in HE I will be keeping a close eye on this.

Itscoldouthere · 30/03/2020 10:12

Bercows, we had to look at the guidelines carefully, my DS who was (mildly) ill is now allowed out as he’s past the 7 days and has had no symptoms for 3 days (it does say cough may persist for several days/weeks). However the rest of the family (no symptoms so far) have to stay in for another 7 days, so if you have not had any symptoms so far you still need to apply the 14 day rule.

WhyNotMe40 · 30/03/2020 10:15

Both of the astrophysicists I know are remarkably lacking in common sense....

Eeyoresstickhouse · 30/03/2020 10:32

So Dominic Cummings has come down with symptoms...... I wouldn't wish corona on anyone but mwah ha ha ha to DC. The man is an absolute cunt.

Janemarpling · 30/03/2020 10:34

Both of the astrophysicists I know are remarkably lacking in common sense....

Magnetic flux density is Physics 101 so he was being extra lacking. May have been the panic.

Coquohvan · 30/03/2020 10:53

@Quartz2208
I’ve mentioned the China numbers weeks before. Told they were correct due to their strict lockdowns.
Don’t believe them at all 1.3 billion people.

As for Russia’s numbers!!!

SistemaAddict · 30/03/2020 11:33

Thank you for the advice. I wouldn't be happy either if I was in the shop with dds even though the advice says they are fine to go out. I'm going to sort out a milk delivery from the milkman and the get chocolate online if I can. I just want to keep everyone inside if possible for as long as necessary and there are other ways to get what we need at the moment so I'll stick to that.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 30/03/2020 11:41

I can understand the ventilator-rationing tbh. Personally, I'm more worried about not having access to oxygen than not being deemed worthy of a ventilator - purely due to the survival rates for the ventilation

My big worry is not convincing a hcp that I am in need of oxygen. I have experience of my asd meaning I can't convey pain well enough. 😕
