NHS need some of that protective gear.

Gilead · 29/03/2020 23:26

My neighbour may well get into trouble at some point, he and his toddler are out all the time, visiting etc. And then they very kindly drop meals or cake off once a week!
Like everyone else my hands are sore but goodness they’re making it worse!

Only patients with 'reasonable certainty' of survival are put on the machines at London hospital

Ventilator 'rationing' has begun in the UK as only patients with a 'reasonable certainty' of survival are to be put on the machines at a London hospital.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust said that 'very poorly patients with coronavirus may need to be on a ventilator for extended periods', adding that 'for some patients this would not be in their best interests'.

A senior consultant told the Telegraph: 'As we learn more about the disease, we are being much more careful about which patients are being considered for critical care. In normal times we will give most people the benefit of the doubt. That has changed.'

'With this infection you need a couple of weeks on a ventilator, so with resources being used for such a long time, you have to be reasonably certain the person is going to get better. Delaying their death for two or three weeks is not the right thing for them or for society.'

womanthatfelltoearth · 29/03/2020 23:41

I read on another thread that those dying now are likely to have become infected around 4 -5 weeks ago ie just after half term. I remember going back to work after half term and being teased that I was over reacting when I didn't want to hug colleagues (touchy feely industry) and people's attitudes only really started to change as the schools closed and then many continued acting as though it was someone else's problem right up to lockdown. I don't think we'll see a drop in deaths for at least 2-3 weeks.

HeIenaDove · 30/03/2020 00:00

or for society????!!!

middleager · 30/03/2020 00:03

Is it just me? I just don't believe what J Harries says. 4-5 days ago she said PPE was sorted and it blatantly isn't.

Yes. On 10 March
deputy chief medical officer) said: "The virus will not survive very long outside" "Many outdoor events, particularly, are relatively safe."

mrshoho · 30/03/2020 00:08

Boris Johnson looks and sounds very unwell. He seemed to be struggling with his breathing when talking and should be in bed resting.

EmeraldShamrock · 30/03/2020 00:34

With this infection you need a couple of weeks on a ventilator, so with resources being used for such a long time, you have to be reasonably certain the person is going to get better it is scary that each ventilator is required for 21 days, An Italian doctor on the Irish prime time said ventilators used as a last resource.
I noticed you mentioned palliative care in care homes rather than treatment a few pages back. Is this how it is working? I'm thinking of the high number of infected NH in Ireland. The residents must be terrified if they're leaving some suffer there.
The NH in Spain were residents were left is heartbreaking, apparently the staff tried to get medical help, they gave palliative care eventually to many died, they had to leave them send in the army.

Rosebz · 30/03/2020 01:18

Agree with mrshoho. Johnson, on the latest twitter video, appears to be struggling with his breathing.

EmeraldShamrock · 30/03/2020 01:53

I am watching drones in Korea spraying disinfectant in the street.
Another precaution our countries are ignoring.

TheElementsOfMedical · 30/03/2020 07:38

On 10 March deputy chief medical officer) said: "The virus will not survive very long outside" "Many outdoor events, particularly, are relatively safe."

In the wake of that announcement, and whilst arguing that events like Cheltenham, football matches and St Patrick's Day parades should be cancelled, I clearly recall robust discussion with pro-huge-crowded-events-because-that-was-the-propaganda-of-the-time posters parroting exactly this line with great confidence (and with complete lack of irony their trump card "I didn't know soooo many MNers were epidemiologists")

Hmm I'm amazed they're not back here telling us that gathering in saunas to drink vodka is the patriotic thing to do... oh wait... if some other government says stupid shit, they can recognise it... Hmm

TheCanterburyWhales · 30/03/2020 07:55

I am astounded that only now, official scientific reports (like the one mentioned on the other thread) are being welcomed as the invention of the wheel when they contain nothing, but nothing, that anybody watching China and Italy had worked out weeks ago. If people weren't dying because of it, it would be funny.

It's all there in film for future posterity that Harries and everyone else in Boris's pocket (which she very clearly is) I'm an English teacher ffs and sit watching her going "nope, that's wrong, that's wrong, and that..." has lied to the public for weeks if not months.

There's going to be the mother of all enquiries hopefully when this is over.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 30/03/2020 08:00

So this morning my 3 year old has woken up with a cough. It's not what I would call a continuous cough but we are now completely self isolating incase. We have been at home (except 1 walk a day, with very strict distancing) for 10 days.

MarshaBradyo · 30/03/2020 08:06

Trump extends social distancing to end of April

No packed churches at Easter tg

Somelady · 30/03/2020 08:11

I saw that in China emeraldshamrock. They must think its in the air to spray disinfectant?

MarshaBradyo · 30/03/2020 08:24

Helen W (?) Health Minister is very frustrating to listen to, cannot answer a straight question.

SistemaAddict · 30/03/2020 08:34

Morning all Brew dd1 has brought me a cup of tea in bed, ds is snuggled up to me, fast asleep, borrowed cat is meowing to be allowed to stalk the hamster and all seems right with the world; until I remember. I was dreaming about it last night for the first time.

I'm glad trump has seen a little sense about things.

I've been reading some of the threads about human rights being taken away. People are so self centred. There is evidence rly a lack of resilience in this country of people are not coping after less than a week, are not symptomatic, and can still go out to exercise and to the shop for essentials.

Somelady · 30/03/2020 08:37

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/29/ocado-buys-100000-coivid-19-test-kits-to-ensure-safety-for-all

They already have 40,000 testing kits with more ordered and on the way. Seems almost laughable that they can protect their employees better than the NHS.

RedToothBrush · 30/03/2020 08:58

Jessica Parker @markerjparker
Who's said what on tests over last 24 hours...

Gove & Hancock yesterday - we've "had" or "reached" 10,000 tests

Whately today - we've "achieved the capacity" for 10,000 tests. Actual number carried out on day in question... "around 7,000"

They could not find 3000 people to test to fill capacity???

NHS nightingale : your exits are to the front, to the middle and to the rear of the hall....

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-52085701
Coronavirus: NHS Nightingale work for Virgin and EasyJet staff

Thousands of EasyJet and Virgin airline staff are being offered work in the new NHS Nightingale Hospital in east London.

Those who sign up will support nurses and clinicians at the coronavirus field hospital, the NHS said.

Virgin Atlantic said furloughed staff who helped would be paid through the government retention scheme.

NHS England said many airline staff were first aid trained and already had security clearance.

The workers would be changing beds and performing other non-clinical tasks and helping doctors and nurses working on the wards, the NHS said.

Virgin Atlantic said it had written to about 4,000 employees, while EasyJet said it had contacted 9,000 of its UK-based staff - half of whom were first aid trained, the airline said.

What do people make of the rumours going round that Wuhan deaths were more in the 30000-40000 mark rather than what was said
Sadly for me those numbers fit far more with what we are seeibg

Horehound · 30/03/2020 09:17

Johnson, on the latest twitter video, appears to be struggling with his breathing

I'd hardly go that far. And he is Ill so you'd expect some kind of change but definitely not "struggle". I didn't think be was bad at all really. That's very dramatic!
