I just get cross when the gov says the vulnerable are sorted for food when it's definitely not true.

@CrunchyCarrot

Most comparisons start at the day there are 10 deaths in each country - because it isn't until then that you can be sure there is a similar background and not a statistical anomaly. That would change your chart to this:

Basically we had a slower start, but are still pretty much matching their growth, just around 3 weeks behind.

Somelady · 29/03/2020 17:18

It's the same disease why would it not be bad here

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 29/03/2020 17:18

The main thing a slower start shows surely - IMO - is that the first people infected here were younger so less likely to die quickly.

So people who had been skiing in half term.

Whereas we know the first infected in Italy were in a care home.

Iwasjustinthemiddleofadream · 29/03/2020 17:25

I missed the press conference. Can someone summarise for me please?

Delatron · 29/03/2020 17:26

Yes I think it’s an age thing, Italy older people were infected first (and they are more touchy feels?) It was also spreading unchecked in Italy for quite some time.

Oakmaiden · 29/03/2020 17:32

It is interesting that the language of the death updates has changed.

It was originally "x of those tested for coronavirus have sadly died".

It is now "of those hospitalised in the UK, x have sadly died."

Do we think this represents a change policy as well as wording?

Namethecat · 29/03/2020 17:32

Iwasjustinthemiddleofadream

They have now called a state of emergency. Not done since we116th They will set up areas led by a gold command , and the military will assist. They also spoke about ppe and equipment making its way to nhs etc.

Namethecat · 29/03/2020 17:32

That should be WW 2 l

LittleMrsMama · 29/03/2020 17:40

Just responding so I can follow and looking forward to reading through this thread.

Feeling really sad about cancelled scans and appointments but mainly the prospect of potentially giving birth/recovering without DH

OldQueen1969 · 29/03/2020 17:40

@MarshaBradyo - good catch !!

Iwasjustinthemiddleofadream · 29/03/2020 17:42

Thank you @namethecat

CrunchyCarrot · 29/03/2020 18:04

That's fair, @Oakmaiden.

I missed the press conference too, still feeling a bit wiped out by cleaning out the fridge completely and disinfecting everything, so we get off to a fresh start with new groceries when they arrive this coming week.

Freshairimportanttoo · 29/03/2020 18:07

What's gold command?

Freshairimportanttoo · 29/03/2020 18:09

Crunchy, disinfecting the fridge is my next to do 😂😂

HeIenaDove · 29/03/2020 18:17

Saw someone on Twitter who now needs to make an extra trip to replace food due to a long power cut.

So an extra trip out!

CrunchyCarrot · 29/03/2020 18:26

Crunchy, disinfecting the fridge is my next to do

Do you have a DP who insists it's done like a military operation, complete with bullet-pointed plan? Halo

Freshairimportanttoo · 29/03/2020 18:26

Thanks pocket.

Mumsnet is my google function actually.

Freshairimportanttoo · 29/03/2020 18:27

No crunchy, not sure if that's good or bad.

HeIenaDove · 29/03/2020 18:29

ideas will need to be bucked up there!

Jrobhatch29 · 29/03/2020 18:35

Around 8000 of the deaths in italy have been in the over 70s. Awful. I read that only 1 in 4 people recorded are under 50 x

Horehound · 29/03/2020 18:36

@Namethecat I was watching todays update and didn't hear anything about a state of emergency or that the military would be assisting Confused

Horehound · 29/03/2020 18:43

In fact @Namethecat is talking rubbish @Iwasjustinthemiddleofadream.
Here is the sky summary
We have just been hearing from Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick and England's deputy chief medical officer Jenny Harries.

Here are some of the key points from today's Downing Street briefing:

Dr Harries set out a likely timeline on the impact on normal life in the UK
She suggested it could be six months or longer before life returns to normal. But Dr Harries clarified: "This is not to say we would be in complete lockdown" that long
She suggested there will be regular review throughout the next six months to see whether the UK can "gradually start lifting various interventions"
She said it would be "quite dangerous" to revert completely to normal life after the UK's first three week review of current measures
And in a sombre warning, she said experts were expecting the daily number of UK deaths to rise over the next week or two
Mr Jenrick said that the first 50,000 food parcels to those who are most vulnerable would be sent out this week
He said that protecting citizens overseas was a "top priority" and that ministers "haven't ruled out" chartering fllghts to get people back
And he said the government "will not stop" in trying to get personal protective equipment to frontline NHS and social workers
