It's like there is competitive isolation or folk who think they know better than government guidelines.

You cannot use your car to "exercise'. It would be 'non-essential travel'.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 26/03/2020 19:55

Where I live I haven’t seen anyone abusing this

Same. I think the majority of people are behaving responsibly, not that you'd know it from MN, obviously.

Aridane · 28/03/2020 01:07

How difficult is it to understand that the law applies to you and that you are not magically exempt because of your personal risk assessment?

Alsohuman · 28/03/2020 01:23

Yes, you can.

Random18 · 28/03/2020 07:18

Also it seems the police are saying you can't.

Whether that is technically correct or not is another thing, but it is clear that we are being discouraged from using our cars to travel for exercise.

I know car parks have shut today at a local area popular with walkers

Alsohuman · 28/03/2020 10:04

Some police forces are saying you can’t, others are saying you can. The more draconian ones are being taken to task by those that have interpreted the law correctly. Thankfully ours is one of the sensible ones.

Tonyaster · 28/03/2020 10:46

Shutting car parks - fine
Dispersing gatherings - fine
Taking drone photos of a lone person walking their dog in the middle of nowhere and asking people to name and shame them - absolutely not at all fine.

MarshaBradyo · 28/03/2020 10:48

It’s hard to police but if it’s not working then more measures will be put in eg France.

Tonyaster · 28/03/2020 10:53

Yes but if its not working it won't be because Doreen and Ron went for a walk in a place with noone else in sight.

Cities need to bear the brunt of the lockdown. They are where it is being spread the fastest.

MarshaBradyo · 28/03/2020 10:56

I have said the same re remote places. It is about social distancing first so if no one’s around it’s not the same.

Tonyaster · 28/03/2020 10:59

If we want to learn lessons from Italy, as people keep saying in here, then we need to lock down cities harder. Noone leaves.

LastTrainEast · 28/03/2020 11:25

I was clarified yesterday that exercise meant locally. Are people still arguing about this?

Anyone up for driving through some red lights too? Those busybodies saying you can't should just be ignored.

Aridane · 28/03/2020 14:01

Yes but if its not working it won't be because Doreen and Ron went for a walk in a place with noone else in sight

Except when lots of Doreens and Robs do this, the deserted places become busier than (a now deserted) Trafakgar Square)...

Aridane · 28/03/2020 14:01

Rons

LetTheCabbagesDie · 28/03/2020 14:10

But that's not what Doreen and Ron are doing? If there's lots of people there, it hardly qualifies as "no one in sight". Confused

Tonyaster · 28/03/2020 14:11

Ariadne but they are quite often not doing this either. It's perfectly possible to find loads of deserted places in the countryside. It's the cities where the virus is spreading. They do need further lockdown.

Nettleskeins · 04/04/2020 15:37

Bump. Really hope the message that a short amount of exercise taken locally is not incompatible with Stay at Home. This could be half an hour walk a day if you feel this helps minimize contact with others. But not going out at all for the next month, or two, would be injurious to the health of many, especially children with no gardens. And it is better to go for a short walk than drive to a supermarket and stand in a queue.

ravensoaponarope · 04/04/2020 15:53

In Wales only, it is actually illegal now to go for exercise more than once a day!

swishthecat · 04/04/2020 15:57

Um, link? I haven't heard that any law has been passed? The law is the same as England is it not?

swishthecat · 04/04/2020 16:02

Guidance same as in England.

GinnyStrupac · 04/04/2020 16:06

I agree. I just hope though that people have got the message that they need to stay local and not drive for miles outside their immediate area to take their exercise. The governments in Wales and Scotland seem to be doing a much better job than central government in getting that message across and protecting their rural/seaside communities. We're on tenterhooks here in our English National Park, and I'm sure many seaside residents feel the same, in case the foolish and selfish masses descend again.

Bring on the man-eating wild mountain goats of Llandudno, or something similar!

NewYearNewJob123 · 04/04/2020 16:18

Wales has banned exercise more than once a day. The rest of the UK hasn't. And it's okay to travel 'a reasonable distance' to exercise' and Police have been advised by the cabinet office not to sanction that bit 'travelling a reasonsble distance' hasn't been defined and people are urged to stay local.

Cissyandflora · 04/04/2020 16:35

The only reason that some people are able to enjoy a walk or cycle in empty streets is because the rest of us stay home. If everyone was going out it wouldn’t work. We have no Garden and young children but we are staying inside.

swishthecat · 04/04/2020 16:49

ravensoaponarope blimey, you're right, the Welsh legislation does say no more than once a day! Apologies for doubting you.
