It's like there is competitive isolation or folk who think they know better than government guidelines.

I think the lockdown instructions are really important because the public have shown that a lot of them simply can't comprehend safe social-distancing behaviour. Unfortunately this does make the rules overly restrictive for people who do know how to behave safely, or for people whose personal circumstances genuinely don't apply (as opposed to people who simply can't comprehend safe social-distancing behaviour).

I suppose what is going to happen is that the rules and enforcement will be tightened more and more, to deal with the foolish behaviour of people who can't comprehend safe social-distancing behaviour. Thus removing freedom of interpretation from everyone.

Until then though, I suppose it's fair to allow people to gold-plate their personal interpretation of the rules with their own personal neuroses (and berate others on social media to never so much as open a window let alone a front door, thus annoying people who can walk outside). After all, people who have risk-assessed their personal situation permitting them to stroll outside in the open countryside where there are no other humans, multiple times daily, are also making their personal interpretation of the rules (and telling others on social media about it, thus traumatising the former group).

My eldest daughter and I walked up to the local shop yesterday to get bread. A man drove past and shouted at us "2 metres!!!!" Shock

VegetableMunge · 25/03/2020 09:28

No, of course not all Londoners/densely packed Londoners. Some. In the same way that not all of us who live at lower density are universalising our experience either.

The problem isn't with people who live in one particular area, it's with people who refuse to understand that what's true where they live isn't true everywhere.

JellyXwellies · 25/03/2020 09:32

@mizu

People are getting far too judgemental. We do need to try harder to stay home but we can't help needing to go to the shop with our kids. Plus 2 meters from family is pointless? We live together and if we don't have symptoms then we don't need to treat our family like a disease.

I was pissed off to see a post on Facebook telling parents off for taking their kids in Morrisons. They need to back off and understand some parents have no choice. There's no deliveries available and single parents are in a tricky place

That made me laugh Grin, I can imagine him with a brightly coloured tabard and home made megaphone.

I know it's the daily fail but pretty clear imo

Lweji · 25/03/2020 10:28

We need to take advice from BJ who is continuously being updated by scientific experts

Do vou not realise that he can pick and choose what advice to take?

And please also realise that can isn't the same as should.
Engage your brain and evaluate your specific circumstances and the risk for you and others against your real needs (not just wants). You're not a sheep, after all.

Meanwhile, the WHO...

Random18 · 25/03/2020 10:41

lweji what is that post supposed to mean?

Please direct me to a statement / poster where the WHO has specifically said to countries to ban people going outside for a walk if they are social distancing.

SarahInAccounts · 25/03/2020 11:07

A few posters stopped making sense several days ago. Best ignored.

WobblyAllOver · 25/03/2020 11:16

I am yet to see any official or scientific advice for England which states you must stay inside if you have a garden, only walk within 400m of your home or only walk for an hour or less. But hey let's not stop that from people saying that's the 'rules'.

I am also glad of this thread because other people on MN are clearly making stuff up to try and dictate what others must do.

Tonyaster · 25/03/2020 11:22

The guidelines apply to everyone of course, but are far more relevant to those who live in densely populated areas. If you live in remote rural areas you can walk as much and as often as you like tbh, noone will know and you won't see anyone.

Lazyllama · 25/03/2020 11:30

I may well be walking more than once today as my selfish wanker neighbour has decided to use his time off to do noisy DIY and garden projects. Bloody hammering and drilling most of yesterday and now the jet wash has been out all morning.

TabbyMumz · 25/03/2020 12:11

"My eldest daughter and I walked up to the local shop yesterday to get bread. A man drove past and shouted at us "2 metres!!!!""

That's so funny. What on earth is the matter with people.

DrFoxtrot · 25/03/2020 12:27

Thank goodness I have found this thread with rational posters.

The preaching and ranting is wearing very thin and I agree that some posters seem to be revelling in it. You can tell they are frothing by the multiple exclamation marks and statements such as 'End of!!!!!!!' and 'Stop it!!!!!!!!'. Calm down FFS otherwise you'll burst a blood vessel.

The government advice is intentionally slightly vague to allow a minor degree of flexibility. What they want to avoid is unnecessary socialising and meeting, which they tried to do last week and people didn't take the advice. This is a definite step up from that, and very much needed. But nobody is going to get arrested for a second dog walk. People need to retain their perspective and common sense.

Oh my goodness

RingPiece · 25/03/2020 12:34

Went out yesterday for a ten minute walk. I popped into a local co-op which was empty. When I went to pay, there was no queue but the person behind the register leant forward to shout over at another customer he knew who had just walked in. This customer came over, stood beside me, right beside me, whilst what I bought was being scanned. I edged away to try to keep the 2 m between us, but he just edged ever closer, and I could feel his breath. At the end I was practically out of the door, my shopping still being scanned. The customer started packing my shopping for me asking me, jokingly to hurry up and ' get over here'. I said we needed to keep our distance and the guy behind the til just laughed!

Very strange! Won't be shopping in that branch of co-op again!

Nikhedonia · 25/03/2020 13:30

Just been to M&S to get our weekly food shop, police office in the queue stood less than two feet from me Angry I kept moving until there was no where else to go.

This is the police MN are relying on to enforce social distancing. Confused

Tonyaster · 25/03/2020 13:34

Please isolate

Who isn't?

Lweji · 25/03/2020 13:39

lweji what is that post supposed to mean?
It means what I said. Engage your brain and assess the risk for you and others of going out.

House, quiet area - hardly any risk for yourself and others if you stay out by yourself all day or get out 100x a day

Flat in large building with communal area, busy city - some risk every time you go out, do it once a day if you must, preferably less. Remember that every time you use the lift, your neighbour may have coughed in there just a couple of minutes before. You may leave viruses for your neighbours.

Lweji · 25/03/2020 13:41

There's a reason most cases and the highest transmission rates are in cities.

Blakes77 · 25/03/2020 13:42

Some people really do have very black and white thinking. Stay away from other people. Don't go in shops as much as you can help. Don't touch things others may touch. That's it really.
And yet, people are shreiking "let the cabbages diieee!!"

Tonyaster · 25/03/2020 13:44

Stay away from peoplr
Wash your hands
Avoid busy places like shops as much as you can
Look after your mental health

Theworldsgonemad · 25/03/2020 13:44

Please isolate

Who isn't?

Plenty of people ignoring the rules

Tonyaster · 25/03/2020 13:48

They are not ignoring the rules.

Actually I am - leaving my house multiple times a day, but as I never see a living soul on my walks i am still isolating.
