And I shall say it again. We are allowed out once a day for fresh air

It's like there is competitive isolation or folk who think they know better than government guidelines.

OP posts:
TabbyMumz · 24/03/2020 17:38

In theory, you could go out twice a day for fresh air, once to walk to local shops to get food, then later on to exercise.

IsadoraQuagmire · 24/03/2020 17:39

I saw some kind of "expert" on the BBC news channel answering questions on this kind of thing. I don't know who he was, I missed the beginning. But he definitely said, no restrictions on amount of time the out of home exercise needs to take (as long as it's not a day trip or anything) AND a question that was raised on another thread on here was dealt with.
He said it was fine to drive to a wood etc to do your exercise there; that it made sense to get away to somewhere secluded with fewer people around. (People on here were horrified when an OP asked something similar)

IsadoraQuagmire · 24/03/2020 17:40

This was on at about 16.30 today incidentally.

HowIrresponsible · 24/03/2020 17:41

I'm going to use my bike once a day.

People may not wish to leave their home though.

StormyClouds · 24/03/2020 17:43

The once a day is realistically impossible to enforce without having police on every street in every village, town and city in the country. Just not going to happen, so there is no need for the competitive boot-lickery on here.

Nikhedonia · 24/03/2020 17:45

It's so bizarre. My road is really busy, if I walked/ran down my road I would bump into 10/20 people along narrow pavements. The sensible thing to is to drive 5 minutes down the road and walk into the woods and be completely away from people. But MN posters seem to think that's unreasonable.

AgentCooper · 24/03/2020 17:51

Agree with you completely @Borkins

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. Some people are revelling in this, taking some kind of masochistic pleasure. It’s like the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to them and now they get to feel important by telling people how stupid/illiterate/awful they are. You see it all over Facebook- someone asks a sensible enough question and they pile on - how stupid ARE you, how many times do you need to be TOLD etc.

It’s horrible and helps nobody. Folk with a genuine interest in their fellow human beings’ well being can at least behave with some compassion.

PertEllaTitsahoy · 24/03/2020 17:52

You cant make non-essential journeys.

Driving somewhere to do your exercise isnt an essential journey as you can just step out your front door and walk/run/cycle.

Lazyllama · 24/03/2020 17:53

The once a day is to stop people wandering about/ hanging about the street all day and claiming to be on their daily walk. If you are going out twice a day at quiet times you will be causing less social distance problems than going out once at a peak time.

Tonyaster · 24/03/2020 17:54

AgentCooper you are absolutely right. Some posters are loving this.

IntermittentParps · 24/03/2020 17:55

Just wait until parks, beaches and open spaces become no-go areas.
I don't think it'll be long, and frankly it's probably necessary. I went to the park for my exercise today and some tit was pushing their kid on the swings in the playpark Hmm

TheSherbetTurbot · 24/03/2020 17:57

I read on one of our local fb sites someone literally frothing at the mouth because she had seen, from the safety of her lounge window, someone who had the brass necked audacity to put people's lives at risk because they were windsurfing in open sea behind a deserted beach..

Nikhedonia · 24/03/2020 17:57

ConfusedHmm

Nikhedonia · 24/03/2020 17:58

Agree with your post AgentCooper

cologne4711 · 24/03/2020 18:00

But some folk, I sense, just revel in being holier than thou. Enjoy the thought of everyone being locked down and living in a policed country because their own lives are pretty locked down anyway

Agree. I was saying this to DH earlier on. You can tell the people who would have revelled in being the Blockwarten in Nazi Germany. You have to do it because it's the rules, even if breaking such rule does not affect anyone in any negative way whatsoever. Not that I have broken the rules although if I were the lady with the mum 5 mins away who wanted her lawn mowing I would have done it.

Stay at home. Don't go out. Keep your windows closed if you truly believe it's airborne (it's not, that WOULD be terrifying). And let those of us with rational minds go out for our day's exercise, enjoy the sunshine and get on with our lives in a safe, physically distancing way.

cologne4711 · 24/03/2020 18:00

I can. A lot of people can't.

PertEllaTitsahoy · 24/03/2020 18:02

I dont give a shit what people do, but dont try and argue that the only way you can exercise is by driving somewhere to do it because it's not true.

Just own it and say you want to go to the coast or woods or wherever 🤷‍♀️

Abraid2 · 24/03/2020 18:03

Clare Gerada on BBC Radio 4 just now confirmed it’s ok to walk more than once a day or drive somewhere where you won’t see people and walk there. She said use your common sense and take the guidance in the spirit in which it is intended—to save lives by avoiding people.

KimchiLaLa · 24/03/2020 18:03

I went for a run today, as Boris said that's ok. Roads were much quieter but I encountered walkers and another runner. Always crossed the road when I saw someone coming towards me. One of the walkers was a woman with an NHS worker work badge. She was the one who was walking closest to me and felt no need to move away! Anyway, I did get some funny looks from people in cars. Not sure why - I'm allowed to do what I was doing - and they were also out!

Nettleskeins · 24/03/2020 18:03

Of course you are allowed out once a day for an hour of exercise (mine is dog walk) AS LONG AS YOU CAN KEEP AWaY FROM OTHER People (not including your own household members)
Much better to take some outside exercise and boost your immune system and general health. And avoid shops as much as possible.

WinterCat · 24/03/2020 18:03

Yes you can go out for exercise but if people start walking for several hours or do a daily walk to a chemist, then a little while later to a shop, then out to another shop, then we can probably expect further restrictions in place.

Abraid2 · 24/03/2020 18:03

It was in the last 25 minutes or so of the PM programme. Also allotment tending is ok.

PertEllaTitsahoy · 24/03/2020 18:04

A lot of people can't.

What's preventing them from walking around their local area? Open the door, step out, walk around a bit, come back.

Vicbarbarkley · 24/03/2020 18:04

I drive (gasp) my two dogs for 5 minutes to a deserted beach for our walk.

Pic attached so you can check out the contact I have with other people.
I then drive home and stay there, and in my garden, from 8:30am onwards.

I have no intention of changing that, and anyone insinuating I am killing people can fuck off. I am far less likely to come into contact with the virus the way I am using my common sense than mindlessly adhering to restrictions that would actually endanger lives.
If you enlarge the pic, there are two blobs in the distance aka other people.

And I shall say it again. We are allowed out once a day for fresh air
HundredMilesAnHour · 24/03/2020 18:05

I went out for a run this afternoon. I was shocked at how many people were in the park not actually exercising. Perhaps they had all run/walked so hard that they needed to take a few minutes and sit on a bench or have a picnic on the grass to recuperate. Hmm Perhaps they are just piss-takers. I don't think sitting on a bench in the park reading a book falls under "daily exercise" or "shopping for essentials". I know it's hard being cooped up all day but FFS what is wrong with people? The rules seem pretty clear but lots of people are still ignoring them. At this rate they will come down harder on us and we'll end up not being allowed out to exercise at all.
