It's like there is competitive isolation or folk who think they know better than government guidelines.

In the apocalypse we'll need all the self grown cabbages that we can have.

dorapicasso · 25/03/2020 13:59

Tonyaster I can understand you going out several times a day as you live in such an isolated place that you don't see anyone. You've decided it's risk free and from what you say it is.

What I can't understand is why you keep talking about it on social media. If even one person thinks that because others are doing it it's ok for them to do it and then spreads the virus then lives may be put at risk. Why not just quietly go about doing what you want to do.

TheElementsOfMedical · 25/03/2020 14:02

It’s a case of identifying the means and the ends. The ends are to minimise viral transmission. The means are to isolate people. Whether people isolate in their homes with doors and windows welded shut whilst flagellating themselves with antibac wipes, or more simply by avoiding other people, the ends are achieved.

What's that got to do with me?

Alsohuman · 25/03/2020 15:43

Fuck all. It’s totally random.

Theworldsgonemad · 25/03/2020 16:01

Please isolate

Who isn't?

I believe you asked earlier

@borkins

So true. People have a poor understanding of how viruses are spread - it's heavy (compared to air) so even if you breathe our virus particles into the air they quickly fall to the ground, that's one of the reasons for 2m. Not everyone has a garden, plus many are very small so go out, let your kids run off steam (just your family, don't use the play because it's shared), go into the countryside, woods etc away from other people and you are not risking anyone. Same goes for cycling etc. It's about limiting social interactions to necessities not causing mass mental health problems due to keeping people cooped up.

Do what is right for you, if you are high risk stay home but for the rest of us let us with full information make judgement calls that's right for our circumstances. My neighbours will have seen me go out 4 times today - fetching prescriptions for those unable to!!!

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 25/03/2020 16:12

I interpret it as you can go for a walk or a run or a cycle ride but you absolutely should not got to the park with your kids a football / cricket set etc.. for a playday with a picnic.

I took a rugby ball to the park with DS yesterday. What's wrong with that? We walked to the park, crossing the road if we saw anyone on the same side, found a big space and threw the ball for a bit. No difference to having a walk through the park surely? Other than it made it a bit more fun! We weren't within 50m of anyone the whole time, let alone 2m

" And yet, people are shreiking "let the cabbages diieee!!""

Yes, that was hilarious.

Tonyaster · 25/03/2020 16:17

Theworldsgonemad i meant in this thread. Obviously there's a lot of idiots out there gestures to real world

BronwenFrideswide · 25/03/2020 16:19

TabbyMunz it's beyond ridiculous isn't it! The worst, however, was the poster who told another poster to let her horses starve to death, I utterly despair at the type of people this virus has brought out of the woodwork.

TheGreatWave · 25/03/2020 16:25

I dunno, letting the cabbages die might not be a bad thing. There cabbages. Envy

TheGreatWave · 25/03/2020 16:27

Pete's sake I still got it wrong.

Typed their first

They're.

I will do my 100 lines for tomorrow.

Ain't that the truth Tonyaster.

Alsohuman · 25/03/2020 18:11

Sure is. And they’re coming out of the woodwork in droves right now.

Blakes77 · 25/03/2020 18:11

Amazing username cabbages Grin

gizmo · 25/03/2020 18:12

Hahaha at 'let the cabbages die'. Thanks for the thread folks, I've been on Mumsnet 18 years and never so close to dropping my account as I have been recently.

This is a breath of fresh air. Feels like a lot of people are converging on the same basic principles:

  1. treat the government's requirements with respect
  2. use your common sense and think carefully about the risks associated with your specific circumstances
  3. stop judging people you don't know: the total surplus of competitive wankery is getting very boring now

I do think @Lweji is making some good points about the infection risks from frequently used surfaces - something I'll be taking into my assessment in the future. It's probably as critical a factor as the 2m distance - how many doors/gates/petrol pumps have you handled when going out?

Stay safe folks!

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 25/03/2020 18:21

I noticed today when walking that a couple of kissing gates on footpaths had been taken off their hinges - I only had to touch one gate on a long walk (with lots of distancing and everyone we saw trying hard even on narrow stretches). And God, I needed the fresh air and the lambs and the blackthorn blossom.
