Horehound, sorry cross posted, of course people are dying that would not otherwise, but the true death rate is not yet determined, that’s the point, the reason for no spike is they think the mortality rate for people with no underlying conditions and expected to live is very low.

We will see at the end of the year then I guess..

Bluntness the projected figure for 2020 taken from the UN you linked to does take into account age of population etc so before covid 19 they were projecting less than 1% increase in deaths on the previous year. Of course there is going to be a spike! Whether the deaths are counted as cov 19 or other reasons there is going to be a spike in deaths. I'm not a scientist and have worked that out! if in one town alone they normally have about 30 deaths for this period but this year they are at over 150 then there is a spike.

Getting cynical but bad death rates in wales and london might well be used by the goverment in a few months to shift some the blame onto the welsh goverment and mayor of london

Already we have the arguments over tube overcrowding vs not shutting building sites.

Yes I think it does need to be seen at the end of the year. As far as I can tell a large proportion of those who died had pre morbidities and were in all likelihood potentially dying over the next 12 months or so. There will be a huge spike in March but whether that then shows a drop towards the end and it balances out.

My feeling is that there will be an overall spike in 2020 as a whole but not as dramatic as it initially shows

Lombardy now seems to have peaked but the rest of Italy hasnt yet so the figures from Italy may be harrowing for some time
