Found it! Thanks. Came off and back on again. Very strange, but it worked.

Ferdinando Giugliano - 'Italy's death toll from Covid-19 could be severely underestimated.

The town of Nembro, near Bergamo, had 158 deaths so far this year vs 35 on average in the recent past.

Only 31 deaths were attributed to Covid-19'

Bluntness100 · 26/03/2020 13:10

Here is the Italy death rate, as the scientists are confirming there is no spike. It’s less than one percent increase, which is the same annually and likely due to the population age, source United Nations.

Think we going to see a big backlash to shops going card only - the people who don't have cards are growing in anger - remember only weeks ago the goverment promised to make sure everyone still had access to cash.

Horehound · 26/03/2020 13:12

So the deaths Italy were seeing would have happened anyway. Essentially?

Angryrant55 · 26/03/2020 13:14

anna holligan - 'Since yesterday, another 78 recorded #COVID19 deaths in the Netherlands - an additional 1,019 people have tested positive. Total 7,431 positive cases, of which 2,151 patients have required hospital treatment'

mrshoho · 26/03/2020 13:15

Bluntness we're only 3 months into 2020. Surely those stats on Italy can't compare against previous whole year figs?

Coquohvan · 26/03/2020 13:15

UK critical no 163 on worldometers site

@ofwarren sorry to hear your unwell. I think the dentist is high risk because of aerosol spray and high traffic environment but so frustrating, the only time you go out! I hope your tooth is ok. I wondered, could it possibly be linked to hayfever. I only ask as I've had a tight chest for a few days which initially I put down to anxiety but thought I'd try an antihistamine which is working but I definitely have a good dollop of anxiety thrown in. I just can't switch off! Fingers crossed for you and your family. X

@Nettletea sorry to hear you have a water infection, many years ago I was like you with regular infections. I would highly recommend Triple strength Cranberry tablets from Holland &Barrett. Prevention obviously not cure. Hope your better soon, I remember how crappy they are.

I was forced to take my car for an Mot, I was very impressed with the garage. They had really thought it all out, including disinfecting car before and after including the key, left in car (I did antibac it myself again to be sure!) paid over phone. They used fresh latex gloves for each car and they left the windows open for it to air off. Though I did look like one of those dogs with its head hanging out the window on the way home trying not to breathe in the car BlushGrin I have totally lost the plot, I know!

Rinoachicken · 26/03/2020 13:16

Has anyone watched the panorama on COVID-19? I just watched it and for it actually terrified me.

Horehound · 26/03/2020 13:17

Hang in @Bluntness100 it says at the top in a note:
NOTE: All data from 2020 and beyond are UN projections and DO NOT include any impacts of the COVID-19 virus

So I don't think they are u clouding covid19 deaths!!

mrshoho · 26/03/2020 13:17

I just scrolled up on that page Bluntness andcin a red box it says 2020 onwards are projections and DO NOT take into account covid 19

Bluntness100 · 26/03/2020 13:18

Horehound they don’t know. This is one of the questions addressed even for the Uk at our press conference.

If someone dies with Covid it’s a Covid death and gets in the stats, what they don’t know is what the over lap is between people who die with it, v people who die because of it.

Italy has an ageing population and the worst air quality in Europe. Elderly die due to age and respiratory problems, as you’d expect.

Right now there is no spike in the death toll in Italy. That’s factual

However Boris and the chief scientific officer.medical officer stated we have an overlap in the deaths counted on how many were chronically ill and would have died anyway, we won’t know until it’s over.

I don’t think it’s about the death rate in isolation, it’s about people needing hospitalisation. If they don’t get it, then they could die, which would push the death rate up. Potentially hugely. That’s the issue from what I can see. They need the capacity to treat people, because if they don’t, more will die than would anyway. And that would push the death rate up.

If we don’t have the capacity, then we can’t treat people, and people would die who would otherwise survive.

Bluntness100 · 26/03/2020 13:19

Sorry, it was the first one I found, but there are many articles on Italy death rate which does take into account Covid. My bad.

mrshoho · 26/03/2020 13:20

where is that factual Bluntness?

Horehound · 26/03/2020 13:21

Right now there is no spike in the death toll in Italy. That’s factual no, you've based that on the link which you have misread!

Horehound · 26/03/2020 13:22

And I think logically, it then follows that if the current stats without covid are normal (as you'd expect) then there will be a spike due to covid19 deaths because what else can it be?!

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 13:22

How is there no spike? I don’t get that the hospitals are overflowing and they can’t treat everyone.

Horehound · 26/03/2020 13:23

There will be a spike.

Bluntness100 · 26/03/2020 13:26

The scientists are saying not, I read a report the other day and they are saying the increase over normal death rates is minimal. Do remember it’s predominantly the elderly dying in Italy and they do have an annual death rate of elderly with respiratory illness which is quite high in that age group.

Horehound · 26/03/2020 13:29

Yes but there will definitely be people who have died from this that weren't going to.
There must be. It doesn't make sense they are then essentially saying they were all going to die in that year anyway... Nope don't believe that.
Please show me a report. "The scientists"could be blooming anyone!

WhyNotMe40 · 26/03/2020 13:30

So they are saying that more are dying in intensive care / hospital generally who would otherwise have died in the next few weeks quietly at home in bed? Then how come th funeral places are also overloaded

EveLevine · 26/03/2020 13:31

@BeyondMymymymyCorona Its not looking good. Did you see the video the ABHB put out yesterday? They say Gwent is following Italy.

www.itv.com/news/wales/2020-03-25/gwent-is-seeing-same-pattern-as-italy-doctor-warns-as-coronavirus-cases-rise/?fbclid=IwAR0E0hx3KDMrURfqlYW2QbbGPDOoeKtZOq2PVK6TOULpPCW1T3d3BsbAMHE

I know they are desperately trying to increase capacity asap - They are opening part of the Grange early to provide extra beds, and theatres are being turned into isolation units. In the Heath they are putting mobile isolation units in the car park!

They've banned all visitors except one parent per child and birthing partners, but I fear it won't be enough though :(

There's a video on facebook from a Dr in Intensive Care, posted 2 days ago, it says he caught Corona but hasn't actually treated any CV patient. He's had Corona for over 10 days, so it must have been circulating in the hospital for weeks!

My facebook is full of posts from friends who work there, and appeals to the local groups for help, and its harrowing reading - this morning neonatal are appealing for hand gel, and the respiratory ward are asking for disposable drinks as nurses are spending 12 plus hours in hazmat suits.

Its so worrying. I'm dreading todays numbers coming out.

Horehound · 26/03/2020 13:31

Exactly. Or do we just not hear about how the hospitals are at exploding point every single year? Hmmm 🤔

Bluntness100 · 26/03/2020 13:31

Put it another way.

You have an eighty year old man. He has a chronic disease in very poor health, he has a life expectancy of say six months,

He catches Covid, it could easily be pneumonia, but right now it’s Covid.

He dies.

His death is listed as a Covid death. As it would be pneumonia, if he dies from that,

However, due to his terminal illness, he would have died anyway this year.

This is the overlap that scientists are talking about, and that they don’t know the scale of, and they think is leading to the fact Italy is not spiking over all.
