I'm relieved. How about you?

@MarshmallowsOnToast Unfortunately the argument that earning money is essential isn’t acceptable otherwise most people would still be working. That’s why the government are bringing in financial support for self employed people and increasing the levels of benefits.

Stroller15 · 23/03/2020 21:09

I found it unclear too. Yes it's a lockdown, why can't he just be clear.

Bluewavescrashing · 23/03/2020 21:09

He needs to give a consequence or people will keep testing the limits.

MrsFogi · 23/03/2020 21:09

Effectively it is no change to what sensible people have been/should have been doing for the last few weeks of social distancing - the announcement was simply to say it slowly and clearly for those who thought they were to special to change their lives too much. It is nowhere near a lockdown.

blackpinkinyourarea · 23/03/2020 21:09

can someone confirm will non essential businesses be forced to close? i dont mean shops that sell non essential goods, i mean offices etc

Tonyaster · 23/03/2020 21:10

Not going to do anything to stop crowds gathering on beaches like they were this weekend.

FreckledLeopard · 23/03/2020 21:10

I don't think it went far enough. No mention of international travel - will Iran Air still have three flights a week here landing? Do we really have the police numbers to enforce a lockdown? Anyone could surely flout the rules - who's to say people won't say they're out for 'essentials' or 'exercise' when they just want to get out of the house for no real reason.

At this rate we need a full, army-enforced lockdown with passes/permits, a curfew and absolute clarity as to what 'essentials' are.

Tonyaster · 23/03/2020 21:11

I think by essential they mean jobs that cannot be done at home.

ScouseMar · 23/03/2020 21:11

I'm just wondering how the restrictions will be enforced- there's enough knobheads who seem to think the rules don't apply to them, look for ways of getting round things and would not respond to the consent/ persuasion approach that it has been suggested the police will take.

NordSjoen · 23/03/2020 21:11

Still totally unclear WRT work. Unless he specifies that ONLY the key workers on the list for schools are to travel to their place of work, then people will still be going to building sites, offices etc whose greedy bosses have kept them open. Maybe that is the next level of announcement. Total shutdown unless your job is involved with the key work.

Also still no info for the self employed beyond universal credit.

Ellmau · 23/03/2020 21:11

I think not at this stage. Next week maybe?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/03/2020 21:12

I'm guessing the "consent/persuasion" approach is all they can do until the coronavirus bill has been fully passed.

Nameisthegame · 23/03/2020 21:12

He bumbled his way into history, the weakness of his speech was disturbing but I’m glad for the lockdown to protect everyone. I’m in day 7 in Spain.

Peacenquiet2 · 23/03/2020 21:13

Confused, it's still not lock down as such, many people will flout the rules still regardless of the police, that we don't have, now having more powers

NCTDN · 23/03/2020 21:14

I'm a teacher. We had children in today who said they had a parent at home but they were too busy to look after them! This speech didn't make clear enough which children should be in.

BananaChocolateLump · 23/03/2020 21:14

I'm trying to figure out if my kids can still go to their dads as they do each weekend but I'm not sure.

Marieo · 23/03/2020 21:14

You are more likely to have people obeying for prolonged periods if you allow a slither of freedom a day. I think a lot of people believe that this will only be for a few weeks, no way. This will be months and months, a new norm will no doubt emerge at some point, but allowing exercise is more likely to get compliance. Also good timing, wait until people are begging for it and here we go!

Witchend · 23/03/2020 21:14

Key metre for your electric: Phone the company-they're meant to be just letting you have it, so don't worry.

MustBeThin · 23/03/2020 21:14

Will vets still be open? Does anyone know? 🤔 obviously they aren't essential for people but what about if you animal gets sick? Mine are due their vaccinations in the next couple of week, does this mean they can't have them?

Plump82 · 23/03/2020 21:15

@user1493494961 have you got a link to this?

BettyIsMyFavouriteSquirrel · 23/03/2020 21:16

I quote from my MPs Facebook update

“All gatherings of more than two people in public - excluding people you live with - are banned”

Namechangervaver · 23/03/2020 21:16

They asked British citizens to return today so I was expecting no travelling in and out of towns/ the country. No such luck.

HonestlyItsFine · 23/03/2020 21:16

Relieved.
People need to take this seriously.

february08baby · 23/03/2020 21:17

people will definitely ignore this because as PPs have said, their employers will class their work as 'essential'.

Plus parents will kick their kids out for peace.

And people will still head out at the weekends for walks eg around the lakes and lochs and everyone else will have the same fucking idea.

Mysocalledlifexx · 23/03/2020 21:17

At last ,should have happend weeks ago
