I'm relieved. How about you?

Sorry if already asked but by ‘ shouldn’t be visiting family members that don’t live in your home’ does that mean dd should not be going to her dads because she lives here the majority of the time or are both households classed as home?

anyoneforbingo · 23/03/2020 21:17

Why are people relieved?! It's wishy washy advice! Non essential Businesses aren't being closed down.. just non essential shops.. so still lots of non key workers will be going out to work because people can't afford to lose their jobs.

I'm a police officer and I'm very pissed off at such woolly advice. How are we supposed to police it? How do I know how many walks you've been on today? Or if your shopping trip is essential? Or have any power to tell non key workers they can't go to work? Borris is a fool.

Plump82 · 23/03/2020 21:19

@feelingverylazytoday you can get electricity in places like Asda as the counter you get cigarettes. I'm assuming supermarkets will still be open.

happymummy12345 · 23/03/2020 21:19

I didn't see the announcement. In terms of going shopping for example, how will it actually work here does anyone know yet? And when does it actually start? We need to do a shop as we have nothing in (due to financial reasons tomorrow is the first chance we will have to do a shop), dh was planning to go first thing. Will he need some kind of paper detailing why he is out like in other countries? Or will it take longer than overnight to implement such a thing? He seems convinced he will be fine to go in the morning as it will take longer for any other measures to be in place, I'm worried and don't want him getting into trouble over it.

ruby2019missyou · 23/03/2020 21:19

It did not go far enough. Construction workers and builders will still go to work because they can’t work from home. He said you are allowed to go out to work. He didn’t say that only key workers can go out to work, but he should have.

TwittleBee · 23/03/2020 21:19

Will hospital shops still be open tomorrow do we reckon?

I am desperate for some supplies, I know I dont neeeed to have additional food to what they bring around on the trolley but it does add variety and ensure I get my 5 a day by buying salads etc. Also running very low on sanitary pads and knickers so was going to grab some of them too.

Alialialiali · 23/03/2020 21:20

@AccidentsAhoy
He didn't actually call it a lockdown though did he? Or did he?

No he did not. And he could have. But even the measures he's outlined are not a lockdown.

All he's done is mobilised police to enforce dispersion of gatherings etc for the people to stop taking the UTTER piss. But for the rest of us, it's no change really. Which is a good thing. You can still go to work for example... if you HAVE to. Hopefully people won't take the piss.

Of course a proper lockdown, ie. permission to leave the house beforehand etc... may come in the future.

LillianGish · 23/03/2020 21:20

Not going to do anything to stop crowds gathering on beaches like they were this weekend. Beaches are closed in France. No travel restrictions - I wonder if we will see more people fleeing to their holiday homes.

Zaalfruit · 23/03/2020 21:21

@Jobseeker19 yep - trust me . Work back office for one and nothing will stop them . I saw a cashier get shouted at by a customer because she had gloves on Friday. Ridiculed for putting her safety first .

@safariboot my mot is due soon 1st April no idea what I should ... I’m pregnant as well so I’m worried . I can’t place it any where off road - I hope they change the status for car MOT same as they did for lorries and buses . I need my car for my hospital appointments .

olderthanyouthink · 23/03/2020 21:22

safariboot move your car tomorrow somewhere within walking distance and walk home as "exercise"

I assume banks will still be somewhat open because not everyone uses debit cards and some pensioners still get their money in cash from the post office...

Smithtylater · 23/03/2020 21:22

The suermarkets are gonna be as crowded as those beaches were over the weekend! They need to put controls in at the supermarkets. There will be panic buying and crowds again because of this!

MrsNettle · 23/03/2020 21:23

Boris likes to make the right noises but as PP have said, how will it be enforced?
It's funny how many posters here say that they are pleased with BJs decision but also glad that parks will remain open. So nothing will change, people will still flock there! How will the police also know if it's your first, second or fifth walk in a day?

lyralalala · 23/03/2020 21:26

I was relieved. Now having seen how many people still don't think it applies to them I'm hoping they are putting together a next step that somehow will facilitate the police, probably backed by the army, policing this.

People in this country are just not getting it.

Namechangervaver · 23/03/2020 21:26

Thank you! That's what I've been saying

FFS he didn't even spell out what a non-essential business is. Card shops ( or whatever) will probably stay open, saying people need cards (or whatever)

happymummy12345 · 23/03/2020 21:26

So at present we don't need permission to leave the house to shop for essentials? So my husband can in fact go in the morning (on his own and practice social distancing of course).

Forza14 · 23/03/2020 21:26

Remember that what they are trying to do is limit & delay transmission, not stop it altogether - which is impossible, basically.

Lots of people will still have to go to work but if those of us that don’t (or can work from home) stay in the opportunities for the virus to transmit are reduced massively which gives the NHS a chance to cope.

JTTWC · 23/03/2020 21:27

It wasn't what I was expecting. People will still take the piss imo. How will they police it? I can't think having police on every street corner preventing big crowds. I also don't see how parks have to stay open for exercise. Most of the idiots who haven't been socially distancing themselves with take their kids there to 'let off a bit of steam.' Also my partner works on a building site. Pretty much a different one everyday all over the country but can see his employer not shutting things down!

CoronaIsComing · 23/03/2020 21:28

Relieved but scared at how serious it’s all got!

hoxtonbabe · 23/03/2020 21:28

As per usual it’s all half arsed. Ok we’re on lockdown but as many have said how will it be policed, we already know that western Europe is stubborn and invincible to all known diseases 🙄 so unless there is a clear police ( and army in London and other major cities) presence I think it will go through one ear and out the other

Absolutely everything except supermarkets, emergency services, petrol stations need to shut down.

Namechangervaver · 23/03/2020 21:28

People are asking if they can still get their cars MOTd. I would say if course, because we still need to drive and it's law to have a roadworthy car. But no guidance as to what constitutes essential. How long is a piece of string? 🤔

Soontobe60 · 23/03/2020 21:29

@safariboot

Banks were in the list of places that will remain open. Food shops, gp surgeries, banks and post offices.

Tootletum · 23/03/2020 21:29

Banks and post offices are essential services, surely. Not sure why either of them would close down given that their employees are in many cases already classed as key workers on the previous list.

LadyEloise · 23/03/2020 21:30

Sorry was there not some policy re herd immunity ?

userxx · 23/03/2020 21:31

FFS he didn't even spell out what a non-essential business is

All small businesses are essential when it's your livelihood. I'll be in work tomorrow along with many others I know.

wonkytonkwoman · 23/03/2020 21:31

@safariboot

www.gov.uk/government/news/driving-tests-and-mots-for-heavy-vehicles-suspended-for-up-to-3-months-to-help-tackle-spread-of-coronavirus

If you scroll down it says car MOTs are being kept under review. Mine's due on 9th April and I'm assuming it'll go ahead unless the garage decides to close.
