No more Sainsbury's deliveries

They will now only deliver to you if they have identified you as elderly, vulnerable or disabled. I assume other supermarkets will do the same.

I'm glad they have done this, but at the same time worried that the supermarkets will be busier germ factories than ever!

I have claustrophobia and have had online groceries for years. I have a weekly slot booked until mid-April. I want to keep them. The thought of them going TERRIFIES me. I am scared of going into the big shops at the best of times. Now?

TheGreatWave · 23/03/2020 08:24

Give it a few days/a week and there will be tens of threads moaning about children in the supermarkets.

swishthecat · 23/03/2020 08:24

This seems to be making a mockery of GDPR.
I think the CCA probably now over rides that. We have fewer rights at the moment.

Great cant get through to sainsbury's, elderly mum not received an email despite being a pass holder.

Thescrewinthetuna · 23/03/2020 08:25

It sounds like it will be a shitshow tbh, great idea in theory but in reality not good

Piggywaspushed · 23/03/2020 08:25

Website is down ! Surprise!

TailWagsDog · 23/03/2020 08:25

I thought they'd be creating more slots not fewer. How is this going to help overcrowding in supermarkets.

Kmx123 · 23/03/2020 08:25

Good luck trying to get through on the contact number

swishthecat · 23/03/2020 08:26

Will people be able to just phone up and lie? IF presumably the info they have is from govt sources it appears they will require documented proof. It makes sense that the first thing they'd consider is people taking advantage.

People will try it on, but I expect they will check via your NI number or NHS number what your situation is.

What the hell? My DH has a yearly flu jab and we’re supposed to be shielding him right now due to imminent surgery....how could they possibly identify that?? I also do the shopping for my elderly mum..the phone lines will now be jammed for days...

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 23/03/2020 08:29

It makes sense that the vulnerable and keyworkers not go out to shop and are first to receive deliveries, but not sure Sainsburys or any private enterprise can manage to do it effectively without coordination from the government.

There needs to be another system outside that of the supermarkets for collecting and distributing food to those who need to avoid going out.

OkMaybeNot · 23/03/2020 08:31

There will be nothing left after these two large groups have shopped for themselves - and wider families (as much as rationing allows).

Same. Also worried. If other supermarkets follow suit it's going to be difficult for lots of people to get food they need, especially if they have large families.

Apolloanddaphne · 23/03/2020 08:32

I would imagine the government have released this information. I would doubt that the stores have been told what issues you have, just that you are potentially vulnerable. I think the big companies are doing what they can - they are damned if they do and damned if they don't. I think we have to see how it is rolled out. I would imagine they are trialling things to see what works best. These are unprecedented circumstances.

Communities appear to be coming together to help people. I never use Facebook but I have joined my local FB support group and there is plenty help out there. People just have to ask.

MinkowskisButterfly · 23/03/2020 08:36

I'm currently staying in, I have asthma I'm not on contactable list just the other high risk list, offered a free flu jab every year and the last 3 weeks been struggling to get my asthma under control. I dont want to leave my house with an autistic 5 year old (I am also carers for a 17 year old), I seem to catch everything going and a nor al cold knocks me for six. 😪

IceBearRocks · 23/03/2020 08:36

I have a severely disabled boy with respiratory problems and a husband with MS....I'm panicking!!!

PegasusReturns · 23/03/2020 08:37

Hugely problematic from a privacy perspective to only release delivery slots to people who are prepared to share details of their sensitive health data.

RainMinusBow · 23/03/2020 08:38

@Marieo Yup, I'm pregnant and classed in the "vulnerable" group.

I am psychic and got pregnant last August knowing I'd be getting a priority online shopping slot today due to COVID-19.

My crystal ball looks surprisingly like a paperweight but is remarkably accurate.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/03/2020 08:38

Suspect there's going to be a lot of people who suddenly use their account for ordering for vulnerable people though now and the system will get pulled in the next two weeks.

Yes, I did for the first time this weekend. Prior to that my uncle and his partner were doing their own shopping.

If a non vulnerable person is shopping for a neighbour they can go to the shops.

Fine if it's a neighbour but what if it's for someone not local?

RichardMarxisinnocent · 23/03/2020 08:39

I live hundreds of miles from my over 70 year old dad and was hoping to be able to order him deliveries every so often from Ocado on my account so he doesn't have to go out too often. Not sure what I will do of Ocado implement this as I am the a account holder and not old and vulnerable.
Also if we go into lock down will people in 14 days self isolation still be allowed to have friends and family drop food off for them? Anyone know how that works in Spain, Italy or France?

EstuaryBird · 23/03/2020 08:40

I think that this is likely to cause more harm than it solves unless it is organised that Sainsbury’s will deal with the vulnerable exclusively and the other delivery services deal with those who have other reasons for needing delivery.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/03/2020 08:43

I’ve not received any emails from them at all. I’m not vulnerable, but have a delivery pass.

But no slots or click and collect avsilable

Marieo · 23/03/2020 08:44

@RainMinusBow it's just interesting that people who have conditions which are directly identified as being extremely vulnerable don't have access, yet pregnancy which as a precautionary but not confirmed does. Especially as the NHS is still requiring them to work.

OkMaybeNot · 23/03/2020 08:44

@EstuaryBird I have a sinking feeling that they're all going to be following suit.

We live miles from the nearest supermarket and don't drive. There's a shop over the road from us but I'm hesitant to use it, a lot of elderly people on my estate use it for their essentials. I have slots booked with Morrisons for the next three weeks (have always done my weekly shop this way). Panicking now that they're going to cancel them.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 08:45

I should imagine these are the people in the very vulnerable group who are going to get a letter from the NHS. They do not have enough slots for everyone who is vulnerable, so they have to prioritise.

Olliephaunt4eyes · 23/03/2020 08:45

Well, this is akward. My husband is meant to be shielding due to severe asthma putting him in the very high risk group, and I've been told to join him in this as much as possible as we don't have the physical space for him to avoid contact with the rest of the household. But we aren't registered anywhere as "vulnerable" so I guess I'll have to go to the shops. Which rather makes a mockery of the whole "shielding" idea. It just isn't practical on any level.
