No more Sainsbury's deliveries

They will now only deliver to you if they have identified you as elderly, vulnerable or disabled. I assume other supermarkets will do the same.

I'm glad they have done this, but at the same time worried that the supermarkets will be busier germ factories than ever!

I order online for my parents. Very limited money so I pay for it, hence why account is in my name. Both elderly and vulnerable. Might give customer services a call later on to see how this works.

stairgates · 23/03/2020 07:58

Hopefully the new registering elderly will not be turned away, if the shops require proof of age or vulnerability it may be beyond some to send it electronically in which case they may give up and go to the shop anyway.

stairgates · 23/03/2020 07:59

Let us know what they say Fallon :)

EvenFlo2 · 23/03/2020 08:00

This scares me - yes vulnerable people should be protected but I am concerned about what the non-vulnerable, non key workers are going to do? There will be nothing left after these two large groups have shopped for themselves - and wider families (as much as rationing allows).

Marieo · 23/03/2020 08:00

So pregnancy is a priority...wow

CrunchyCarrot · 23/03/2020 08:00

You can still be in a vulnerable group and not claim benefits or receive care, and I am not sure a supermarket has a right to that information.

Yes, I can't even walk to the end of my street and I don't get benefits. I am one year short of being offered the flu jab. I don't drive either.

woodchuck99 · 23/03/2020 08:01

They identified me. I think it could be related to the NHS flu jab.

LottieBees19 · 23/03/2020 08:01

We book deliveries for 90 year old mum in law. But as delivery to her address I think that will be fine. The driver can confirm she is old. Husband to ring Tesco today.

Pebbles574 · 23/03/2020 08:02

Oh this is a nightmare. I’ve already committed to getting extras on my deliveries for my two elderly neighbours who are both now in isolation. But I also need food for our own family of four too.
I’m a delivery saver customer, but haven’t heard anything.
No slots of any kind available today - nearest click and collect is miles away!

AccidentsAhoy · 23/03/2020 08:02

I get support group ESA for long term illness. Does anyone know if I qualify?

smoooth · 23/03/2020 08:02

Just tried the Sainsbury's contact number and just got 'The telephone network is busy at the moment. Please try again later.' I doubt it will be better later.

mochajoes · 23/03/2020 08:06

won't everyone say they are shopping for their elderly family & neighbours??

woodchuck99 · 23/03/2020 08:07

There are no slots available anyway. I suppose that they have already been booked. They say that they will open them as they become available but I'm not sure how they become available if fully booked.

Whalette · 23/03/2020 08:07

I've been identified - I have asthma, severe allergies (to environmental stuff that I have no control over), and epilepsy. The latter physically leaves me unable to drive to a supermarket.

Suspect there's going to be a lot of people who suddenly use their account for ordering for vulnerable people though now and the system will get pulled in the next two weeks.

Non vulnerable, non key workers will still have plenty of food - we have not run out of food.

Whalette · 23/03/2020 08:07

@AccidentsAhoy No, not necessarily you have to be at risk and vulnerable due to COVID.

JJPC · 23/03/2020 08:08

This scares me. I’m a single parent with no car, 2 year old twins and a 6 year old with SEN and the nearest shop is a 30 minute walk away. If they don’t have the basics in then I’ll have another 15 minute walk to try the next shop and so on.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 23/03/2020 08:09

I don't order with sainsburys and whilst I agree with vulnerable people getting priority on slots, if Asda start doing this as well I'll be stuffed. We are also symptomatic and in isolation atm, but even if we weren't I have 2 toddlers and no car so have always relied on getting our food via deliveries. We do live walking distance to the supermarket but I can't push a trolly and a pushchair so will have to just grab as much as I can carry in a basket, then do it all again the next day. Neither of mine have got the message about not coughing and wiping snot over everything (because toddlers) so I'll either have to hold up the already massive queues disinfecting everything we touch, or risk spreading our germs everywhere, everyday. The last time I went to the supermarket people were packed nose to tail queuing for the tills, not even a vague attempt at distancing. And that's without the people swearing and jostling each other. I don't want to have to take kids into that environment every day, for their sake and for the sake of other shoppers.

Whalette · 23/03/2020 08:10

The site crashed two minutes after releasing the vulnerable people slots... They came out via email at 08.05 and the site went down at 08.07.

Slots were available for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week - I don't need one so I won't take one, I will need one next week though.

HermanHermit · 23/03/2020 08:11

@Whalette @woodchuck99

OhClover · 23/03/2020 08:11

This sounds lovely but I think it’s going to be very hard to implement fairly. My parents are 70 but as capable of getting to the shops as anyone else. I am certain people will abuse it.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 23/03/2020 08:11

It's correct. I have received an email saying I will be allowed to book a priority delivery slot today as I am pregnant.

How did they get this information?

I hope Amazon delivery follows suit. I was forced to cancel my subscription yesterday as I could not get a slot 3 weeks ahead.

Mind you that's a paid for service so maybe not.

woodchuck99 · 23/03/2020 08:12

won't everyone say they are shopping for their elderly family & neighbours??

Why would they get a slot? If a non vulnerable person is shopping for a neighbour they can go to the shops.

HermanHermit · 23/03/2020 08:12

Haha balls deleted the entire message - weapons grade data protection issue if the nhs has shared sensitive personal data relating to medical status with a supermarket though. Diabolical if that’s how they’ve identified you - it would be the first question is ask

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 23/03/2020 08:13

OhClover It doesn't matter if your parents are fit as a fiddle, being over 70 they are vulnerable and should not travel to the shops. They deserve the delivery.

Tolleshunt · 23/03/2020 08:14

I haven’t received an email. The account is in my name and I’m not registered for anything medical, yet DH has severe asthma and COPD and has been isolating for a while now. I have been keeping my own outings to a bare minimum to try and avoid catching it and passing it on to him. We have a 4 year old with multiple food allergies and intolerances, who can be hard to cater for at the best of times.

This scheme sounds like a good idea at first blush, but I really can’t see how they will be able to get it to work properly.
