No more Sainsbury's deliveries

They will now only deliver to you if they have identified you as elderly, vulnerable or disabled. I assume other supermarkets will do the same.

I'm glad they have done this, but at the same time worried that the supermarkets will be busier germ factories than ever!

My mum who is 79, disabled and immune suppressed is unable to book a delivery for the next three weeks even with priority.

Whalette · 23/03/2020 08:14

@HermanHermit I shared with Sainsburys on advice from my doctor and I needed a slot last week (it came yesterday, hence why I don't need one for this week).

Lovemusic33 · 23/03/2020 08:14

I’m hoping we fall under this if not I’m not sure what we do. I’m a single parent with 2 disabled kids (one in higher rate care), I can’t leave them at home to go shopping as the supermarket in ten miles away. I have tesco delivery slots booked.

They said last night (Borris) that the council will be delivering food those in the vulnerable groups that are stuck at home?

ineedaholidaynow · 23/03/2020 08:14

This seems to be making a mockery of GDPR.

We are shopping for elderly neighbours and DM. My DM doesn’t have the internet.

If we have to self isolate, what happens to her? We would have organised online deliveries for her and us.

Seems like just Sainbury's at moment and says get in touch if you don't get an e-mail today and think you are on vunerable list.

I do worry as we have home deliveries with tesco as we don't drive and two of us in house have asthma - though our doses apparently mean we are not going to have self isolate for 12 weeks- we've still been trying not to go out.

Whalette · 23/03/2020 08:16

@Tolleshunt They emailed and asked you to contact them if you thought you needed priority - they sent this email on Saturday I think to all Sainsburys customers.

At the moment it's only one day a week for vulnerable slots by the look of it. And only allowed to book for the next week.

Fairnair · 23/03/2020 08:16

I regularly shop online at Morrison’s, usually have a delivery once a week or every other week, depending on I had left in the house. Have a mid week delivery pass for deliveries Tue, Wed, & Thurs. Hopefully my order will arrive tomorrow morning, as it’s been on order for over two weeks. Depends on where you live, as the next slot after tomorrow was first week in April, and none after that. Unfortunately they cancelled an order last Thurs, which was for my mother in law (who lives about a 35 min train, and then 15 min taxi away from us, and lives on her own). I have included some food for my Mum & Dad in my shop, who are nearly 70, and my Dad has type II diabetes.

Don’t really want to have to shop in-store at Morrison’s if I can help it, as I have heard that lot’s of people were standing round chatting close together, coughing, etc. & not covering their mouths, not visibly using the hand sanitizer available etc. etc.

Marieo · 23/03/2020 08:16

@Lovemusic33 I believe the packages will be for those who receive their letter today. Unfortunately many people are vulnerable for a plethora of reasons but won't, and wont be able to book any slots either.

Haha @ineedaholidaynow true, at least we can sue them when this is over for a gigantic flaming breach of GDPR, plus discrimination.

Piggywaspushed · 23/03/2020 08:17

We haven't had an email and DH gets flu jab and is on list 2 , as it were. Not sure how on earth this is working. Do you have to already be with them to get this?

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 23/03/2020 08:17

They say that they will open them as they become available but I'm not sure how they become available if fully booked.

Maybe they'll gradually cancel existing ones for the non-vulnerable?@woodchuck99

Whalette · 23/03/2020 08:17

@ineedaholidaynow You need to ask friends or family to help out where ever possible for the two weeks of self isolation.

It may be that you will never reach that stage so I don't understand why now, when you can get out and about, you want to be prioritised for delivery to be honest.

swishthecat · 23/03/2020 08:18

For everyone asking about how Sainsbury's have found out who is vulnerable etc, I would expect they and the Government have shared data, which the Civil Contingencies Act probably allows them to so. These are not normal times.

OP posts:
slartibarti · 23/03/2020 08:18

The supermarkets are unlikely to consider individual requests to be classified as vulnerable as there will be so many they'll end up back to square one and unable to cope with all the deliveries.
People need to ask for help. There are a lot of willing volunteers.
A disabled person posted on our local website offering £20 for someone to do a food shop for him and was inundated with offers to do it for free.
Also covid mutual aidgroups are springing up all over the place, even if not on the list there's likely to be one in most areas.

Kmx123 · 23/03/2020 08:18

This is a absolute joke as someone with lupus a cough and sen children i am trying to isolate however being unable to get a delivery in the last week i will be venturing out within the next few days as i need shopping and its a shame i dont have no one to watch my kids either so imagine how many other people with symptoms are queuing outside shops from 6am and have to go several shops to get the basics i didnt gave the money to panic buy so government need to put something in place

OhClover · 23/03/2020 08:19

catherineofaragon I understand the point that it’s for their protection but then I am pregnant so shouldn’t go either. I think if these are the criteria there will be a lot of people eligible, and it will be very easy for people to lie to get a slot.

lubeybooby · 23/03/2020 08:19

delivery saver customers get second priority, and slots will have a staggered release. they are not completely stopping

Piggywaspushed · 23/03/2020 08:19

I have to say, though, hard as Sainsburys are trying, this is going to become like everyone suddenly becoming a keyworker..

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 23/03/2020 08:20

Ah SwishTheCat I see.

mochajoes · 23/03/2020 08:20

We are self isolating for 2 weeks & then happy to go to the shops. However will they have food??

ineedaholidaynow · 23/03/2020 08:21

Whalette I am not asking for priority now, I am wondering what we do if we need to do online shopping in the future.

Whalette · 23/03/2020 08:23

@ineedaholidaynow I would ask at the time you needed it, or, ask for an emergency drop if you parents don't get given one? After I had asked family or friends though - that was my first option but my friends that live me have just come back from Italy and are self isolating with symptoms. My family are in another country.

jay55 · 23/03/2020 08:23

@couldbeouting can school order milk/bread/veg through their school dinner supplier for staff to buy?

Marieo · 23/03/2020 08:23

@swishthecat Sainsbury's are a commercial enterprise, they haven't been tasked by the government to do this or set this criteria, it is of their own backs. If it was in collaboration with all supermarkets then yes, if it is a government set initiative. But nope.

FlyingFlamingo · 23/03/2020 08:23

I think they are trying to do a good thing but they haven’t really thought it through...and I hope Tesco don’t follow! I am a community nurse and whilst I could get to the shops I am likely to come into contact with CV if I haven’t already so I am avoiding any outings except work, plus what happens when I inevitably show symptoms and I have to isolate? Confused

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 23/03/2020 08:24

Will people be able to just phone up and lie? IF presumably the info they have is from govt sources it appears they will require documented proof. It makes sense that the first thing they'd consider is people taking advantage.
