No more Sainsbury's deliveries

swishthecat · 23/03/2020 07:09

They will now only deliver to you if they have identified you as elderly, vulnerable or disabled. I assume other supermarkets will do the same.

I'm glad they have done this, but at the same time worried that the supermarkets will be busier germ factories than ever!

I haven't had any hospital admissions but mine is on the list

YakkityYakYakYak · 23/03/2020 11:24

Haven't RTFT so not sure if this has already been answered so sorry if I’m repeating.

I heard the Sainsbury’s CEO talking on the radio yesterday. They can identify the over 70s through the personal data they hold already, they are identifying the ‘vulnerable’ by those who have used certain services of theirs in the past and can add others to the ‘vulnerable’ category if you call their helpline and explain your situation.

Yes, this might be open to CFery, but so is everything in life. I think this is a really good call from Sainsbury’s to prioritise in this way.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 11:24

I have had an emergency hospital admission and been on IV antibiotics at home.
But people who have a severe version of my illness are on daily oxygen. So if that is what they meant by severe, no I won't be on that list.
That is why I do not know. And yet I keep getting attacked for saying i don't know if I am covered by that list or not.

DoubleAction · 23/03/2020 11:27

Hmm our small school special provision sources all the food via Tesco delivery. The staff are in and working, now I need to send them to the supermarket too? Orders are too small for a commercial supplier.

Whalette · 23/03/2020 11:30

@alloutoffucks I was pissed off with you for your attitude of "I will simply go out"

There are many other options to explore than putting yourself and others at risk, and, adding strain to NHS services. I would start exploring them now if i were you (bearing in mind, I was told four weeks ago to do so, three weeks ago to prepare to work from home, and two and half weeks ago to self isolate).

Santaclauswhosthat · 23/03/2020 11:32

@DoubleAction you might find that a local commercial supplier can help. We have one here who is even taking on domestic customers as their core customer base has shrunk so much now that restaurants etc are closed. I was considering using it myself as like I say I've found it difficult without a car even with friends trying to help. I found out about them via a community Facebook page - maybe have a look where you are?

Tolleshunt · 23/03/2020 11:36

Thanks Whalette I will try and dig it out from Saturday’s emails.

Whalette · 23/03/2020 11:38

@Tolleshunt - here you go - the text is below for you so you don't have to search.

We are continuing to work around the clock to feed the nation in these challenging times.

Many of you have written to me in the past 24 hours to tell me that you like the idea of priority shopping for NHS workers and for elderly and disabled customers, but that these should be at different times.

We have therefore decided to allow NHS and social care workers to shop in our supermarkets for half an hour before they open each day. So anyone with NHS ID will be able to shop from 07.30-08.00 every day from Monday to Saturday. We're delighted to be able to offer priority shopping to all the hard-working NHS staff across the country who are working so hard to keep us all safe and well.

In addition to this, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all our supermarkets will dedicate 08.00-09.00 to serving elderly customers, disabled customers and carers.

Many of you have also asked me about priority online delivery slots for elderly, disabled and vulnerable customers.

We have been able to identify a number of customers as elderly and vulnerable based on the information they have given us previously. These details would include date of birth and if you have ever used our vulnerable customer helpline. For all of these customers, we will email you today (Sunday) with information on when slots will become available.

If you do not receive an email and you consider yourself to be vulnerable, please visit our Groceries Online website on Monday for information on how to contact us. We are also working as quickly as possible on an option for people to register themselves as disabled and vulnerable on their online shopping accounts.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to get in touch with me and share your feedback - it's because of you that we are making these changes and we will continue to listen, learn and adapt during this uncertain time.

WidowTwonky · 23/03/2020 11:39

I’m sure it’s been pointed out but they PRIORITISING vunerable/elderly etc, not restricting their service to only this group. So other people can still use Sainsbury’s online just after the first hour of the day

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 11:39

@Whalette i have already done that. I am registered with every supermarket that does online deliveries to my address. And I can get deliveries from a posh deli easily - although could not afford to do that much at all. Please do not think I have not put planning into this.
Please understand that I am scared.

I already had been told I was very vulnerable to bacterial pneumonia and have been vaccinated for it. So I will be very vulnerable to viral pneumonia.
And I am also scared that I will be forgotten about as my illness is very rare.

Cohle · 23/03/2020 11:39

It's totally impossible to get through to them to explain if you think you're vulnerable. My husband is having chemo at the moment and is on the shielding list - I'm really anxious about how we will manage without deliveries.

Whalette · 23/03/2020 11:39

@alloutoffucks I am sorry you are scared, you can also check with your GP surgery - they can help too.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 11:44

@whalette I will. But they really know nothing and just always say what does your consultant say. I am no longer under a consultant as they only regularly see those severely affected i.e. on daily oxygen. They do follow NICE guidelines though.
So if they just did a database search for things like severe asthma, I will not be included.
Yes if I do not get a letter tomorrow I will ring and check.
I suspect you have no idea what it is like to have something very rare. You get over looked all the time.

Megan2018 · 23/03/2020 11:52

I don’t know what the hell we will do then if we have to self isolate.
30 mile round trip to nearest small supermarket. Our only neighbours are stuck abroad. We’ll just starve then shall we? Or go out and infect everyone.
So ridiculous.

rnwood · 23/03/2020 11:54

To those restricted to their homes but getting worried that there's no supermarket delivery slots. There's lots of organisations/groups that have sprung up to fill the gap and deliver essentials to you. Around here, I've seen these mentioned on Twitter, Facebook and Gumtree amongst others. I understand that not everybody will be au-fait with using/searching these, so if you are struggling please let us know what general area you are in and people can try help you find out what's available.

HuggedTheRedwoods · 23/03/2020 12:12

My colleague has had the email from Sainsburys - neither her or DP are in the vulnerable group so both puzzled as to why they got it. Both fit and healthy but the DP still went online to book a delivery though Hmm but couldn't get on the site anyway. Wonder how many others will be getting a free wonka golden ticket?

Ciwirocks · 23/03/2020 12:14

My parents are over 70. My mum managed to book a slot for tomorrow so it seems to be working. Just need to see what she manages to get hold of now!

starrysimon · 23/03/2020 12:16

35 weeks pg, asthmatic and had pneumonia twice in the past two years. I have also been displaying symptoms since Saturday morning. Definitely in the vulnerable category and have to self isolate due to symptoms. I would expect to get priority as going to a supermarket is a huge risk for me and the baby BUT of course I want, and expect, people with cancer or a life limiting illness to be well ahead of me in the ‘queue’. I think most pregnant women are at the bottom of the list, aside from those with health conditions. If I am unable to breathe then my baby’s life will be at risk as she needs sufficient oxygen from me. It’s really not worth a trip out to a shop or supermarket and same for DH. We are now self isolating due to symptoms and we probably won’t see our 4yo DD for a good few months. This is the harsh reality.

It’s said it’s mainly those in the third trimester as lungs are incapacitated due to lack of space. 1st and 2nd will be less ‘vulnerable’ but still have to worry about drop in immune system. If the government and NHS state pregnant women then I’m going to follow their guidelines. They’re also technically two people so double the risk. The ‘vulnerable’ pregnant women could also be giving birth to children with health conditions.

IMO anyone in who is perfect health and isn’t vulnerable shouldn’t be annoyed about not being able to get a Sainsbury’s delivery. There are still plenty of other supermarkets available, as well as local farms and business that are delivering during these times. Please spare a thought for the elderly, severely unwell or disabled who normally rely on this service. I can’t imagine what it’s like for them, it must be terrifying. I admire Sainsbury's so much for this, although I think soon enough all deliveries will be for high risk people only. I really wish I was in a position to help the elderly and vulnerable!

Wannabangbang · 23/03/2020 12:19

Its a good idea to help those people who need it. But not entirely sure how they'll identify you, nhs id, birth certificate maybe 🤔
But it misses out a few groups such as disabled etc which I don't think is fair.

TheGreatWave · 23/03/2020 12:22

widow it does not say that at all. The actual shop is restricted, the slots at the moment are just for those identified, with no indication about anyone else.

goldfinchfan · 23/03/2020 12:28

I ma one of the Vulnerable but Sainsburys say I am not. Don't know where they get their info from. I am not over 70 though.

Can't phone them line always engaged.

Not pleased have been a customer online for years

effingterrified · 23/03/2020 12:37

The problem with this policy are:

  • the vulnerable elderly esp 80+ mainly are not online and have family members (often living far away) booking online deliveries for them. I have done this for my mum for years but the shopping is ordered from my account, not hers as she can't handle the internet so doesn't have an account. This system does not allow for other people ordering shopping for the very elderly.
  • even more crucially, it doesn't allow for those most crucial to self-isolate ie families where one or more people have CV symptoms. These people will not be on any list as no testing is done at home, but they should both be top priority for essential supplies of food or medicine and should be supported in remaining at home.

This system will not reach these people.

Lumene · 23/03/2020 12:38

What about those on 14 day isolation? How are they supposed to get food?

Frigginella · 23/03/2020 12:40

Excellent. My disabled grandma who is high risk and has had a delivery weekly for years will now be able to get a slot again.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 12:43

You are supposed to already have 2 weeks of food in so you can self isolate. People were told to do that a while ago. You plan ahead for that.
